Since a few weeks my PC have been working slow and the gnome system Monitor says that my cpu is working at 100% all the time. when I ran top command appears:

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt was running squeeze before it became stable. X was running fine and loading automatically on booting. Then I did not use it for some time. Then I ran apt-get updates and upgrades after squeeze became stable. A few packages were kept back. So I did aptitude dist-upgradeIt installed some things and maybe removed some things. After that it will boot only toconsole. When I do startx on the command line, X session starts and everything seems normal. But it will not boot to the GUI like before. I also checked in the Synaptic and saw xorg and xserver-xorg still installed

The installation went ok but when Ubuntu said it needed to restart to complete, now my pc just loads windows 7 everytime. It doesnt give me an option of choosing Ubuntu. I know the install worked because when I look at my drive in windows it is the partitioned size. Any way to manually launch Ubuntu?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't find a way to use cheese in lucid. When I start it, it immediately starts flashing photos in countdown mode and repeats. I can't find a way to stop it except to use the hardware Fn-Esc to disable the webcam.
Because of the intermittent flashing and countdown 3-2-1 screens, I can't hit any buttons or menus.
My adsl device currently used as Auto eth0 only works when i plug in to the computer. The device doesn't starts automatically as it does in Windows. How can solve this ? Each time I try to connect internet after restarting , I should manually plug the cable to the port.

I come from a RedHat background and am not too familiar with the Ubuntu/Debian way of dealing with service startup so this may be simple. I was running 10.04 LTS on a Sony Vaio and did a distribution upgrade to 10.10. When running 10.04 LTS the sshd daemon started on boot and I was able to ssh into the PC. Now that did the update I can start the daemon using the command "sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start" but it doesn't start when the systems boots.
I even tried creating the entries in the /etc/rc.#.d directories like this:
/etc/rc0.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
/etc/rc1.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh

some times network disconnected automatically. if we restart rhe server it automatically starts to work. again 2 or 3 days, the same senario is happening. on this server 2 database is running, it makes lot of problem to us. what will be the problem? is any connection parameter is there? (ie i mean only 50 numbers of client connection is only allowed like.) or any problem in NIC card or NIC driver.

View 6 Replies View Relatedtrying to get Firefox working properly. I have the tarball installed from Firefox�s site and am using Fedora 12 with KDE as the desktop environment. The problem is if I start Firefox normally, say, by just clicking on the firefox script, then the graphics will be rather crude; but when Firefox starts as soon as I log in (because I�ve configured it to auto-start) then the graphics will be nice and smooth. I�m having a hard time trying to find answers for this because I�m not exactly sure what�s happening? I think when it auto-starts as I log in, it�ll use... well, this is the bit I haven�t got a clue how to explain? I�d guess one time it uses QT, and the other time it�ll use GTK.
I don�t know why it�s doing this, and when it�s started normally and I go to shutdown most of the time it�ll come up with a crash report. There isn�t any difference in the way Firefox is being opened, the auto-start calls upon the same script that my shortcut uses, which is the same as clicking on the firefox script in the firefox folder. I have a few images attached to elucidate the problem. I understand I may not have made myself very clear, but I�m having a great deal of trouble understanding what precisely is going on.
Firefox can seem a bit glitchy when the crude graphics are in use. Like the mouse-overs which leave traces of the box behind when you move the mouse away. So I�m having to logout then back in if I�ve happened to close Firefox and want to reopen it...
I'm connected to the internet using a wireless router. Each time I boot, I have to grant root privileges and type in a shell: iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys key dhclient wlan0 Isn't there a file(or location) that I can modify to automatically grant root privileges and execute these commands when debian starts? Something like autoexec.bat in windows.
Something else I'd like to mention is when I execute iwconfig.... for the first time, I get this incomplete result:

I'm new to debian ,I was trying to mount my NTFS partition but I did that only with read permissions I couldn't install ntfs-config(allthough I have ntfs-3g installed).So I want to figure out how to mount my partitions with read/write permissions automatically as the systeme starts ?

udevd[746] nss_ldap reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 4 seconds)
udevd[746] failed to bind to LDAP ser er ldap://192.168.0.100 cant contact ldap
It fails and then tries again, and again, each time increasing the sleep time. This is happening before network sercvices are started so ther is no way it can connect to ldap. anyone know a way to fix this problem?
I use Synergy to access my laptop when I turn it on next to my desktop. It is a pain to reach over, log in, and then run synergy. I would like synergy to start as soon as gdm loads so that I can move the mnouse over and log in using the desktops keyboard/mouse.Can GDM run a command at start like that?

Recently I have had a run of random errors on boot up. Finally, the quit button, top right of the screen disappeared permanently. I am convinced it is because I added Evolution to the programs that start automatically when I login to Ubuntu (auto login). Evolution uses the Internet connection which hasn't been successfully established by the time it starts. In the past, this would crash Ubuntu. It seemed to be fixed by this stage, but maybe not. Is there some way of delaying the startup of a program in the automatic startup list - to give the rest of everything time to settle in - before it starts trying to use other startup resources?

So, I have to open up a Terminal window, and issue sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Windows and everything is fine.

Instantly title says root@localhost before settling with user@localhost with current directory as ~/Downloads. Only happens with my particular user account (normal user), not with root as I tried.
