I have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?

I don't know about your computer but when mine is working properly no process is sucking 95%+ over time. I would like to have some failsafe that kills any processes behaving like that. This comes to mind because when I woke up this morning my laptop had been crunching all night long on a stray chromium child process.
This can probably be done as a cron job, but before I make it a full time job creating something like this I'd thought I should check here. :) I hate reinventing the wheel.

I have an old computer and BIOS counts the time slower than real. So, how can I set my OS to update the time automatically using the internet? If it updated the time only during booting, it would be enough.

I am currently storing most of my dotfiles in a git repository to make keeping them in sync across all my computers easier. I've just recently acquired a Macbook so now have to have all my dotfiles supporting the differences between Linux and Darwin. The first incompatability that I have encountered is colour coding ls, in Linux this is the flag --color=auto and for Darwin it is -G.
My first attempt at making my .zshrc portable is to do the following:
case `uname` in
Darwin)
alias ls='ls -FG'
;;
Linux)
alias ls='ls -F --color=auto'
;;
esac
Once I find a few more things to change I'll probably pull the computer specific stuff out to separate files to keep it a bit cleaner. What I'm mainly wondering is if there is a better way to do this other than using `uname` to determine which stuff to run.

I'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem.After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again.How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

I've created a set of users using the newusers command. Unfortunatelly ive messed up and added all users to the 1000 group as primary group instead of giving the group argument as null what would add them to a new group. To make things clear:
The entries should be
user:password:::User Name:/home/user:/bin/bash
but I did
user:password::1000:User Name:/home/user:/bin/bash
I need to create the missing groups. A simple fix could be do a for loop creating a group with the name of each user in my file and then adding the users to it. Are there any dangers of doing it? What impact could this change have? Are there any safer ways?
A combination of the following commands:
Quote:
Add users to a group with the gpasswd command:
# gpasswd -a [user] [group]
To delete existing groups:
# groupdel [group]
To remove users from a group:
# gpasswd -d [user] [group]
If the user is currently logged in, he/she must log out and in again for the change to have effect.
Quote:
for i in (names)
do groupadd $i
gpasswd -a $i $i
Assuming I've created all users in group 1000 I could remove them from it with
Quote:
# gpasswd -d [user] [group]

B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something).This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.

How can I get the last time any of the files in a directory or its subdirectories has changed?
e.g
Dir - changed 1/1/1
Sub Dir 1 - changed 2/1/1
Sub Dir 2 - changed 3/1/1
File 1 - changed 10/1/1
File 2 - change 5/1/1
The output for this for Dir should be 10/1/1 (File 1 was the last modified one). Getting the last file name to be modified is a bonus but isn't necessary.

I was doing some testing which is required for some of my products
Here is the strange behaviour i observed
First i did set the timezone to PST 2010 (which is less than GMT basically negative timezone)
zdump -v /etc/localtime |grep 2010
/etc/localtime Sun Mar 14 09:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 01:59:59 2010 PST isdst=0 gmtoff=-28800
/etc/localtime Sun Mar 14 10:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 03:00:00 2010 PDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-25200
[Code]....
Note:in the above case when i did set time to 2:59:55 and said ok by then CEST became CET already. That could be the reason why DST is not happening.
I tried with few other positive and negative timezone configuration all the negative time zones resets back properly where as all the positive timezones doesn't
All my timezone files are up to date,i am using fedora 9

I have installed nagios in a CentOS vm and now its monitoring the local host, one remote host which is also a vm with CentOS 5.3 and one windows xp system. Is there any option for me to change the threshold time for the services given? For e.g. I had a service of current_load which comes as a default plugin while installing nagios itself. What should I do to change the threshold value of the current_load so that I might get the warning or error alert some time earlier as it was now.

I need some help recovering from a "slight" screwup. We just moved 3 TB of data from one RAID Array to another. Low lever archive files. This was done with a regular cp (for some reason) and now we have lost all the timestamps on the files, and we urgently need to get the timestamps back on these files.
We are running Ubuntu 9.10 Server and we have mounted the following
1. /mnt/old-raid ##Old raid from the old server
2. /mnt/new-raid ##New raid on the server
I know we can read out the timestamp on the old server using the command stat -c '%Y' <<filname>>
I know we can change the timestamp of the file, using the command touch -d '<<date>>'
To get from the stat -c date to the input date in touch we need to use date -d @<<timestamp>> +'%d %b %Y %R'
So my question is, how can I create a loop that will list all files in a folder, get their timestamp and update the old timestamp with the new?

I need to edit the system time as a not-root user. I am carrying out the following actions in my program.
1. Read the User Id of the process. User_ID= getuid()
2. Printing Capabilities(Permitted, Efffective, Inheritable)of the process
3. Setting UID = 0, using setuid(0)
4. Calling the prctl(), function to keep capabilities
5.Switching the UID from root to User_ID of the process
6. What we have now is a process with root capabilities as a non root user
7. On printing Permitted, Effective, Inheritable capabilities, I get the following
--> Permitted = 0xfffffeff = Effective
Inheritable = 0x0; with UID = 1001;
8. I then try and set the system time with --> system("date -s 10:00");
9. I get an error: date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted
10. I am unable to understand as to why I cannot set the time even thought the capability bit CAP_SYS_TIME in the Permitted and Effective sets are SET.

I am going nuts because this should a simple thing and for some reason it's not. 1. I'm just trying to use NTP to set the time automatically. I've done numerous installs and had it work fine. However for my Fedora 11 box and this Fedora 13 box, it's not working. I'm getting a vague error "unable to connect to server." Which could mean anything. As near as I can tell, it should be simple:
a. Select to use NTP.
b. Adjust the local firewall to allow connections at 123 (ntp)
c. If necessary, adjust the router settings for port 123.
I have tried sending port 123 traffic directly to my Fedora 13 machine, but same error. I've tried using other choices of ntp server (like the North America pool). No dice. I've had two separate routers, first a Dlink and now a Cisco. Same problem. I've checked the SELinux logs for errors but didn't notice anything obvious (that doesn't mean much -- I'm not much of an SELinux guru). I've set up Fedora 14 at work and it connected just fine. Didn't have to open anything other than the local port on the Fedora firewall. No network/router adjustments needed.
It's not a giant thing but it's driving me nuts. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Particularly big obvious things that maybe I've overlooked? Does some other setting override this NTP time? Does using this require use of GMT? Something like that?
