So this has happened to me several times with fedora 12, and granted I havn't rebooted in a while but it seems that after I update and reboot, I cannot log into GDM any longer.I can login to the CLI, so and I checked all my logs to make sure it wasn't an authentication error. What does happen though, is when I try and login to KDE the screen flickers likes loading the desktop and then spits me back out to the login prompt.var/log/messages reports successful login. Here is what i did find

After finally fixing a problem with screen resolutions on my son's PC, (it was stuck at 640x480), now the Terminal window comes up as blank space. I can still type command lines, but can't see what I'm typing nor the response - it's all a white box
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 on my laptop (Dell Studio model). I have installed fedora 12 onto my machine in the unallocated space, the installation went smoothly. If I login to the fedora directly then every thing works fine. but if I login to Window 7 and again try to re-login into fedora 12 after shutting down the winows 7 then the booting screen will become black (almost invisible) even though I can be able to login and can go to the desktop (which is also very least visible) if i click on suspend and then click on the power button then the screen will become properly visible.

All the online Java tests I have found tells me that all is fine. I've browsed around quite a bit, and some are suggesting incompatibilities between Java and certain display drivers, but unsure of how to proceed.
I have downloaded new version 10.4 of Ubuntu and burn it on CD with power iso, gave it a try to install but after it started from cd and waited to load an error pop up and says it can not install from cd ...then i tried to start live cd and it started Ok with no problem. In live cd mode i tried install again and started well ,1to4 step ok, then at 4 step when it comes to HDD and partitions the window to choose from is blank. No HDD no partitions. but interesting is that in this Os it has partitioning tool in system tools GParted, and whit it i can see my HDD and partitions, even tried format with it a partition for Ubuntu then tried install but problem is the same = blank step 4,.. so on my pc i can not install 10.4

I have just installed kubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on a moderately new Lenovo R500 laptop (dual-booting with Windows XP).
Problem: several times per working day the screen goes blank. It remains backlit, and I can still hear music or games if they were running beforehand. The only way I have found out of the situation is a full restart.
The problem occurs somewhat randomly, but is usually associated with movement of the mouse. Switching to a new user often causes the problem. Sometimes the screen freezes for 1 second before going blank. I have tried messing with the screensaver settings and the permissions for libusb (which are flagged in the mouse system settings page) without luck.
I tried posting this before and I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it worked, so if it did please forgive the double post.am very very new to centOS and linux in general. I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. However when I create a php page it's just blank. When I look at the apache error logs I get this: PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0
I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:16 index.php
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:15 index.php~
I'm sure that this isn't correct but like I said I don't know much about how to set permissions or who the owner needs to be. I've done alot of searching and seen similar posts, but no one seems to explain it clearly.
I'm obviously having a problem with my onboard video but don't know how to fix it. Ever since I upgraded to Natty, if I maximize any window or resize it to more than about half the total area of my monitor, the contents of the window go totally blank. I can still see the window's title bar, but there's just a blank white space beneath that. I never had this problem before the upgrade. What do I need to do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just updated the kernel to fix nvidia video problem. But now I have problem of no sound. I think it may be unrelated to the upgrade of kernel because most or all of the symptoms were already present, or the upgrade may have complicated things even more. Another recent symptom in conjunction with this problem is that "restart" and "shutdown" from panel dropdown do not work -- they just log out. May or may not be related at all.

I booted the 11.3 live cd (KDE) and it worked great, so I installed openSUSE. After installation my video acted funny - the screen would occasionally blank when I opened a window, moved or resized a window, etc. It's as if the video driver decided to redraw the entire screen.
So I rebooted the live CD to see what was different and noticed this:
So it seems the 3D driver is an issue. Is there a way I can tell SUSE to just use the swrast 3D driver?
Just during the last three days, when running Update Manager, clicking Check, downloading all available updates, then Clicking Install Updates, the Downloading Files window pops up but it is blank. and it stays blank. The little rotating icon indicates something's going on but, NO. Nothing has happened, even after a couple of hours. Trying to close Downloading Files brings up a window to Force Quit. Then trying to close Update Manager has no effect. to shorten the story, finally a window pops up saying that the "AT SPI Registry" is not responding. I'm sure trying the same thing will not yield different results. I'm running 10.04.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
Using slackware 12.2, xfce, Firefox 3.0.16 and for the past few days i have been getting Persistent System Security Window that looks like MS Firewall and you can't click on the X or Cancel because then it activates a so called security analysis with green progress bar. I open a terminal real quick and issue pkill firefox command.I have been trying to get to the basicconfig site to follow tutorial on firefox security update but that window keeps comming back.I emptied out my /tmp files but i am still having same problem and don't know what to do

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

Very annoying. I do not get any error alert it just hangs and when rebooted carries on quite unperturbed.
