I recently installed Linux Mint 8 (main) on my P.C.. When I select the main menu and activate the Terminal, all that comes up is a blank white window--The same thing happens when I try to run Software Manager or Synaptic. Could you please instruct me how to fix this
problem.
After finally fixing a problem with screen resolutions on my son's PC, (it was stuck at 640x480), now the Terminal window comes up as blank space. I can still type command lines, but can't see what I'm typing nor the response - it's all a white box

I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running an Acer 1810Tz, dual boot with win7.Under 9.10 and Grub I had no boot issues, however I have just completed the upgrade to 10.04 and upgraded GRUB to GRUB2.Everything boots just fine into Ubuntu, and my GRUB menu looks right, but when I select the Windows 7 option, the machine just hangs with a black screen, white cursor top left. I'm sure this is a trivial problem, something overwritten that shouldn't have been perhaps, but I have no clue where to start.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI install the fc11 from Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso. The software update has just updated my fc11 kernel from 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686.PAE to 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE. If I boot using the new kernel, The screen resolution is not correct (everything gets bigger) and the screen goes into blank white screen suddenly after log in.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Sager NP5797 running Lucid (32-bit) with a BisonCam NB Pro (V4L2) webcam on /dev/video0 In Flash (like [URL]), everything works great. My video appears to both myself and others, and I see incoming video. (I am using the 10.1 RC libflashplugin.so, downloaded from Adobe's site) But in applications like Cheese, Skype, etc., I get a big blank white box where video should be: Cheese (as well as every other app I try) sees the camera on /dev/video0:
In Skype, the person I am calling sees my video perfectly fine. So my camera is "working" and sending video. But I cannot see my video, nor can I see their incoming video. It's all a big white box just like the one in Cheese in the shot above. Taking the other person out of the equation, when I go to use the "test" in Skype, it's just a blank white box too. The video will not draw for me.
Again, I do see video in Flash-based web apps that use the webcam. And other people are seeing my video. But webcam video (both mine and the incoming stream) won't "draw" for me. What makes V4L video not draw? I am using the binary NVIDIA driver for the GTX 280M chip in the laptop, and I am using Compiz. Though I tried turning Compiz off and Cheese still just showed the white box.
Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook on my Dell Vostro 1000. Install seemed to go through ok, although I am not connected to the internet. When the install completes, I have the default background image and er... that's it. Around the edge where the menu should be, the background image is slightly darker. If I move the mouse to where the menu items should be, rather than what I assume would be a text label/description of that menu item, I get a blank white box instead. If I click, some of the applications do indeed open, albeit without titlebars.
I am new to Linux, I decided that it should be about right for me to make the switch, but encountering such an issue so early on isn't inspiring me with much confidence. I have access to this Windows machine for downloading and burning CD/DVDs. I also have a WD Passport drive (150Gb) and a USB stick (1Gb).
I'm relatively new at Linux, and I am trying to get Nagios to work correctly. I'm running CentOS if that matters. I think I followed the directions here correctly, but all I get is a blank white screen after I login. The documentation page works fine, but I don't see anything on the main http://localhost/nagios page. I have looked at other solutions to this problem (adding the correct path to the open_basedir in /etc/php.ini) and that still did nothing. Any Way to decode my httpd logs... So everything went fine in my installation of ubuntu 10.04 but when the pc was reset after installation, it goes to the black screen with the white writing and then does nothing. To check if there was a problem with the disk I had burnt, I installed an an older version of ubuntu (8.something) which had previously worked and the same thing happened: installation goes fine but then when I reset it goes to the black screen with white writing and does nothing. I then tried to install 10.04 again through usb with the same results. Do I need to change a BIOS setting?

After the upgrade process, I restarted and chose "Ubuntu, with [the current kernel]" and now I am greeted with a white screen with no login or boot splash. My processor is pegged according to the processor case light. My computer's specs are as follows: AMD Athlon X2 5200+, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, 2GB DDR2 ram, Dell Socket AM2 Motherboard, and 250 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I really need to get this computer to work.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on my computer dual booting with 9.10 32bit. Was hoping to move to 64 bit to get full use out of my RAM and CPU. The issue is that when I tried to run Compiz-Fusion that I got from the Ubuntu software repos that came with 9.10 nothing would change. I tried to make a 4 desktop layout with a cube like I have on the 32 bit OS and nothing happens. So I right click on the Compiz icon and select the "reload windows manager" tap in the drop down menu and every time it turns to a blank screen of white with a mouse on it. I can move the mouse and I can even use some of the new settings I changed but I cant see anything else besides a mouse and the white screen. I feel as thou I am using a version of Compiz that is not compatible with 9.10 64 bit.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I have two or more windows open, the window in the foreground will be white, or blank. This most notably happens when I have Firefox and LibreOffice open in the same desktop. The window in the background is clearly visible, and when I right click on the window in the foreground, a normal context menu comes up. This also sometimes happens when there is only one window on a desktop.
I have played on and off with ubuntu over the years, and am currently using 11.04 on an older HP with an Athlon 64 chip. You may consider my background knowledge of the system to be one step above nil. I'm happy to provide any system info you may want, but you'll likely have to tell me how to obtain it.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.
I have installed "plug and play" webcam logitech c270. Audio works fine. I can see and hear when people call me. People can hear me, but not see me. On the Skype/Options/Video the "test" button for video results in blank white screen.

I've seen Dwell Click under accessibility options, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I know that sometimes the GUI control applets have features undisabled that don't really do anything (i.e. WINS) if you don't have the right stuff installed. How do I get mouse over pretty much just simulate clicking the window.

Using Ubuntu 10.10.Recently updated to kernel 2.6.38.Strange problem.. all windows display fine when they are not minimized. But as soon as I minimize ANY window, all the contents are wiped out. All I get is a title bar with white window. This happens with every window e.g. browser, games, system windows, text pad etc.I am using Nvidia drivers. Could that be the problem?

Experiencing problems with firefox browser. A plain White blank screen appears only with the titile bar named Firefox. Actually when the web-browser icon is clicked, just a cursor BAR appears stuck inside the extreme left end of the screen (cursor bar something like the one we find in word processors or this blinking line while I type this). I manually have to expand the bar in order to get the firefox browser, which is the plain white screen.
Initially had problems with the missing wireless firmware, reading through this forum I activated the Broadcom driver. But before that, I wired in my laptop to the router and then FIREFOX worked fine, after an update which installed bout 214 updates the firefox got conked.
i'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?
View 9 Replies View RelatedNewly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

I am running SuperOS 10.10, which is based on Ubuntu 10.10. I am fairly new to gnome Ubuntu and never have dealt much with changing themes.I am using the Ambiance theme and like everything about it but the slide bar is white and hard to see. I like the fact that the close, minimize, maximize buttons are on the left side of the window. If I change the theme to clearlooks then the slide bar is blue and easy to see but the close, minimize, maximize buttons are on the right. I went into Ubunty Tweak, window manager settings when in the clearlooks theme and the close, minimize, maximize buttons are set to custom.
If I uncheck the custom button and click left then nothing happens. I would either like to change the color of the slide bar in ambiance theme or change the close, minimize, maximize buttons location in clearlooks theme. It is probably simple to do but I have been going in circles with no change. Can someone point me in the right direction? Nevermind, I will just switch to another distro. This question didn't generate a lot of traffic.
On my system (Ubuntu 9.x -> 10.x) I have always had the problem of not being able to select the edges of a window in order to change the window size. It seems that the 'hot' zone, which defines the window border selection area, is only 1 pixel wide. I find it very difficult to position the mouse pointer over this zone. Even if I am successful (which usually takes more than 20 tries), as soon as I begin to depress the mouse button, the merest movement causes the pointer to move off the 'hot' zone - and selection fails. The only work-around I have found is to select a corner point of a window -which seems much less sensitive - and then drag the window border in either a vertical or horizontal direction, rather than diagonally. But this is counter-intuitive and unsatisfactory.
