I downloaded and installed the debian 8 ppc netinstall on my powerbook G4. upon the option of which desktop environment I wanted, I de-selected debian desktop environment (I only selected printer and utilities.) After finishing the install I am prompted with terminal. I logged in and did the following:
Code: Select allnano /etc/apt/sources.list
to include
Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
then did
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies
then
Code: Select allsudo apt-get install lightdm
and finally
Code: Select allsudo apt-get install synaptic apt-xapian-index gdebi gksu menu
sudo reboot
after reboot the login screen pops up. I log in, and a terminal pops up over the login screen. I think the issue is startx is not working?
I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
I am using some software that uses CUDA to run some stuff on the GPU.
If I am using ssh to connect to the box, or vnc even, and I try to run the program I get an error that no CUDA device is enabled. I have to go over to the machine and physically log in, and type "startx" to get it to detect the device. It can also be another use on the box using an X session, but one has to be started soemwhere on the box to get CUDA working. Is there a way to "startx" over an SSH session so that this will work and I dont have to go over and log in?
I downloaded the latest up dates and lost my GUI I used STARTX and it loaded the GUI I got a message saying something along the lines of there is a propitiatory driver for you video card would you like to use it
I clicked yes it told me to log out and log back in.I did so and now STARTX doesn't work I have an ATI card.3 questions
1.how do I get it to load the GUI
2.how do I get it to boot straight to the GUI
3.how do I change my root password
When I run the command startx it launches me immediately into Gnome without having to login and if I attempt to go back to the command line interface by typing in the comamnd init 3 in the x-terminal it does nothing. If I attempt to hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace it does nothing however if I were to run init 5 it launches me into the Gnome Display Manager and expects me to login and if I run init 3 in the x-terminal it shutdowns the x-server and returns me to the command line interface.

What command should I use to restart my desktop?
So, I am having difficulty understanding what I need to do or if this can be done at all..
I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx. that seems to only start KDE.
Can you use startx in some way to optionally start another environment? If not, can it be set up to start that graphical umm.. like start chooser screen? I don't know all the terms but its the screen that comes up that you enter your username/password and you can select which environment you like.
I came along the comment (when you type startx => you won't go to KDM or GDM but directly to your standart desktop= KDE,GNOME,...) at [URL] and would like to know what the difference is if any.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI left slackware 13 with airodumb and airplay executed in console for 6 hours. When I got back, konsole had something similar to "packet has length error". I could open the packet using aircrack -m option, but when i shut down the OS, it didnt shut down properly. Now when I do startx black window stays forever. I tried pkgtool and change to KDE but the same happens.

I am a newbie to Ubuntu and I am having problem with loading Gnome and startx. I have ubuntu 9.1 installed on my Dell Inspiron E1505 system. The problem started when gnome-power-manager started giving error regarding configuration settings not installed properly. I tried to google it and after lot of searching I figured out that my root directory is almost full. Moving some folders helped me solve the problem. But in the meantime I think I have screwed up some where. Now my Gnome or startx wouldnt load. Ubuntu logins my user profile and after that just sits that with the cursor revolving. When I press ctrl+Alt+F1 it gives no errors. Then I stop gdm by
"sudo service gdm stop" and start startx by "startx" seems like Startx also doesnt start. checking again by Ctrl+Alt+F1 shows that its still running giving message like
setting master
stopping master..
I'm running RHEL 5 on a dell server. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to put:
xmodmap -e "pointer =3 2 1"
somewhere in the startup. It seems creating an .xsession is the solution. But after I create a .xsession file in my home folder, the next time I run startx the screen just turns black. (And only for a short while can I switch to another virtual terminal, before that too becomes impossible). After deleting the file it runs OK again. I'm not using any login/desktop manager. I use IceWM on Debian Squeeze. Is there some script/import that has to be present in the .xsession file, or is something else going on? Also I'd like to know what I should do when I get a black screen. Turning off the PC is such a crude method
I am trying to start a VirtualBox VM on a separate X screen (in fullscreen) so I can switch between Linux and Windows XP by doing Ctrl + Alt + F<.
I am basically trying to do something like this:
startx "VBoxManage startvm XP" -- :4
startx "VBoxManage startvm "XP"" -- :4 (is this correct for quotes within quotes??)
I get a "bad command line option "VBoxManage" back from the startx script so obviously I am not understanding the rules for how to write "shell magic".
How can I do this correctly, or perhaps there is a better way of achieving a VirtualBox VM on a separate X screen?

startx(1): initialize X session - Linux man page
I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I just installed Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 in my VMWare, but I do not know how to start X Windows. I have tried to type "startx" on "RUN", but I get error message: Fatal Server error Server already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

All open-source fanatics out there like me hate industry and large companies for being on such a high horse all the time. Well, some of us have stooped to their level (towards ubuntu noobs).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using a custom minimal install of Ubuntu 10.04 I built up from scratch using mini.iso. All went well till I decided to add .xinitrc to my home dir and autostart.sh (for openbox) to ~/.config/openbox in order to automatically launch a number of common programs when I load up my desktop using startx. I use alsa for my sound server; I installed alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss pretty much first thing after installing my new system and sound was working perfectly up until a few hours ago. What gets me is that alsa ought to be loading up as I boot into Linux, I can't see how xinitrc or autostart.sh can even affect it, but it seems switching to using those has caused some sort of issue with it, as I am now without sound. Everything else worked fine witht he change, my desktop is loading just how I want it now, all the rest of my sorftware is working fine as best I can tell, it's just the sound that is now borked. Has anyone else had this issue, I've searched all over with no luck so far. If it helps, I am not using any desktop environments, just openbox with a small handful of hand picked packages, I've been running this system for nearly 2 weeks now without any issues until now, and this one has me stumped.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'll use i3-wm, just want to know how can I start it instead of gnome using startx.
By the way, where can I get detailed info on X? I am a little confused, don't really understand what startx really starts, what X is and what does it do, how to config.
Just installed Fedora 14. My HDD LED is flickering constantly about 7x a second. This only happens after I start X-windows and continues if I log out. Top shows dbus-daemon at 15% CPU. I'm sure this is causing it as it only starts after X-windows.

My usual aptitude safe-upgrade routine has not throw any errors. I do remember a libxcb-* package updating (or installing?) on the last run. This is the only relevant package I can recall.
I have been able to log into a tty[1-6] as root or my user, and then startx -- :1, while logged in as myuser and running X on tty7, , but this somehow skips my default desktop manager (GDM3) and boot straight into LXDE (with no menus!). In /etc/X11/default-diplay-manager I have: /usr/sbin/gdm3 ? How do I get startx -- :1 to start a desktop manager?
Related 2nd question: When I did the above startx -- :1, it would start the X session in the same tty (e.g. tty2) where I was logged in when running the startx command. It used to be (in older Linux versions) that startx -- :1 would start an X session on tty8 (and the default would be :0 on tty7). Is this the (new) way things are supposed to work?
I tried to install NVIDIA drivers to my asus computer . When I rebooted startx did not launch.
These are the commands and source i used to install nvidia driver
Code: Select alldeb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
apt-get update
apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-xconfig nvidia-settings
nvidia-xconfig
shutdown -r now
Here is my log
Here is my lspci | grep -i vga
Here is my xorg.conf file
I have Lenovo Y500 laptop with 2 Nvidia GT650M.
Today I've installed fresh Debian 8.2 from netinstall.
Then I installed nvidia driver with #sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver nvidia-xconfig
Then I rebooted the system.
When the system turned on I executed #sudo nvidia-xconfig to create Xorg.conf
Then #startx
After startx the screen becomes black, coolers on the video cards start to work faster and the system shuts down.
