General :: Ubuntu Gnome And Startx Wouldn't Load

Aug 24, 2010

I am a newbie to Ubuntu and I am having problem with loading Gnome and startx. I have ubuntu 9.1 installed on my Dell Inspiron E1505 system. The problem started when gnome-power-manager started giving error regarding configuration settings not installed properly. I tried to google it and after lot of searching I figured out that my root directory is almost full. Moving some folders helped me solve the problem. But in the meantime I think I have screwed up some where. Now my Gnome or startx wouldnt load. Ubuntu logins my user profile and after that just sits that with the cursor revolving. When I press ctrl+Alt+F1 it gives no errors. Then I stop gdm by
"sudo service gdm stop" and start startx by "startx" seems like Startx also doesnt start. checking again by Ctrl+Alt+F1 shows that its still running giving message like

setting master
stopping master..

General :: Automatically Load Kernel Module?

I'd like openSUSE to automatically load a kernel module (e.g. libsas) at boot time even no device requires it. In Ubuntu, you would add the module name to the file /etc/modules. Is this the correct place for openSUSE as well?

General :: Edit The .bash_profile Being A Normal User In Red Hat?

Feb 18, 2011

I have installed Oracle Database server in Red Hat Linux for the first time. I edited the .bash_profile first time & defined some parameters like "export ORACLE_SID =orcl".I quit the editing. Then When I entered ". .bash_profile" it got error " not a valid identifier" it shows like "bash: export: '=orcl' : not a valid identifier for all the lines I edited it shows same error beacause I think I put a space in between "ORACLE_SID" & "=orcl".

So when I tried to edit that using "vi .bash_profile" being a normal user. It doesn't allow me editing.when I try to delete that space (because I think I have got error) using Backspace key on my computer,,it just moves the cursor to left in stead of deleting that space.

Ubuntu :: Won't Load Desktop - Switches To Black Screen And "sudo Startx" Gives Error Log

Feb 21, 2010

Few days after installing Ubunto 9.10, during installation of gstreamer, the installation utility got stuck, and with it the whole desktop icons. (I think the gstreamer has nothing to do with it). When I tried to execute some icon, like the terminal, it will not open. After restarting the computer, I get a tty1 login terminal and not the graphical one (tty7). When pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, nothing happens. It switches to a black screen. "sudo startx", gives some error log. I already reinstalled the X-server, ubuntu desktop and other stuff.

What can be the problem? Is it related to my video card (nvidia 7600 GT)? I didn't install any nvidia specific driver. This happened to me earlier and I reinstalled Ubunto. I think maybe I should move to some other distribution.

General :: Setting JAVA_HOME In .bash_profile Doesn't Work

Apr 15, 2009

I have some Flex and Java files which can be compiled with JDK1.5. My server was already loaded with 1.4 (at path /usr/bin/java) and our sys admin(I dont know why) copied another JDK, JDK 1.5 at path /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/. It seems very easy to use this java. Just set the path in .bash_profile. I did it and now if I run which java I still see the path for java 1.4 not java 1.5. Am I doing something wrong? Following is actual entry from bash_profile

Code:
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
PATH=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/bin:$PATH
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/
export PATH JAVA_HOME

Red Hat :: Load Average And Errors On Dmesg

Jan 18, 2011

I have two servers. One in production (lets call it the OLD ONE) and the other (lets call it the NEW ONE) in tests to replace the OLD ONE.This is the basic hardware of each one: (I can post more detailed info if you need, but beside the erros on dmesg, look at the the L2 cache of the NEW ONE )

Old one:
2 quad core processors that linux recognize as 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5440 @ 2.83GHz - 32Kb L1 - 6Mb L2
48Gb RAM

New one:
8 quad core processor that linux recognize as 32 x AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6136 @ 2.400Mhz (- 64Kb L1 - 512Kb L2
128Gb RAM

The scenario:We run a dataflex system on the old one, with average of 3000 users, with tops at 3300 users and sometimes less then 2000. In the old one, we have a load average from 2 to 6 with the 3000 users, depending on the type of application (sometimes we run reports to txt files that take more then 6 hours to complete and the load average can raise to 12). 85% of this conections are from remote links.
Dataflex is a language that derives from C that have their own sgbd (if we can call it that way), and have a limit of 2gb per table. This size we almost have on 5 tables and we use a dataflex feature to compress the data.

The problem:We are migrating (or trying to) the tables to oracle, so we bought new machines for the DB and the new one to replace the old one, becouse we think that could not handle the job with 2 oracles (load balance).In some tests we could see (or suposed) that the oracle database was not so fast with more then 1000 users (opening same table and doing the same task) and we decided to test the new one with the system that is in production right now, with dataflex tables, to ensure that the problem could be oracle.We change the HDs and IP. Started the system on the new one, and started to monitorate as the real users start their jobs. At 800 users the Load Average raised to 26 and with 1300 users we had more then 115 on Load Average. More users login in and the TOP become slow, pointing 400 of LA. From here we started to get some "Lock time out" erros and we had to change to the old one again, to prevent corruption on the tables. I'm analizing all report tools I know about performance and hardware and I cant see nothing. I saw some errors on dmesg, but I can say that is related to that problem.

Debian Configuration :: How To Load Driver Automatically

Sep 21, 2015

I have PCI-device and driver for it - tmk1553b.ko

The problem is to make this device work i have to open terminal after system starts and write

Code: Select allcd /path/to/driver
sudo insmod ./tmk1553b.ko d0=1 t0="TAI" misc=1

But idea is that this PC will work without operator so driver must be loaded automatically. As i realized the solution is to make script but when i try google it shows me how and where to put this script but not how to make it. Also i've tried to put tmk1553b.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-686/kernel/drivers/misc but it doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: XFCE Desktop To Load Up Automatically Without GDM

Jun 6, 2011

I'm making a Home Theatre OS, and I would like my XFCE ubuntu desktop to load up automatically without the use of GDM. This is because once remastered, the GDM cannot automatically log in until it's been set up to again. And the fact I removed all the GNOME icons which took up 50MB of space, so now the GDM interface is all glitchy xD

It basically involves removing GDM, logging in (the login and password are both 'media'), then having an automatic login command to run 'startx'. I've removed GDM on my test environment, and so far managed get in manually by logging in and typing startx. (On that note, do I even need a username and password? Can't I just use the password only for su?)

Ubuntu :: Automatically Boots Up Into Windows 7 - Can't Load / Boot Back

Jul 5, 2011

First, let me start off by saying that for the past 5-6 months I've been using Linux stand-alone without Windows at all. Recently though, I got netflix and found that there is no support for Linux distros. So, begrudgingly, I installed a small Windows Partition on my computer. So here's the problem: I can't boot back into Ubuntu. Whenever I turn on my computer, it automatically boots up into Windows 7. I know my Ubuntu partition is still there, because when I boot from my live disc I can see it. Is there a way I can fix this using Windows and/or a live disc?
