I have being googling and trying to find out solution to unable to startx.Please note i have already search from last 2-3 days for the solution but didn't found anything.So request someone to guide me step by step.Also one more thing, the server was crashed and i upgraded the existing server using CD. But since then we are not able to start startXI hope i can get some help here ,i am a newbie to linux but i am computer engg so i can understand some logics..I am getting below error

I am trying to start a VirtualBox VM on a separate X screen (in fullscreen) so I can switch between Linux and Windows XP by doing Ctrl + Alt + F<.
I am basically trying to do something like this:
startx "VBoxManage startvm XP" -- :4 startx "VBoxManage startvm "XP"" -- :4 (is this correct for quotes within quotes??)
I get a "bad command line option "VBoxManage" back from the startx script so obviously I am not understanding the rules for how to write "shell magic".
How can I do this correctly, or perhaps there is a better way of achieving a VirtualBox VM on a separate X screen?
I installed fedora12 redhat linux on my desktop with install DVD. When the install was complete I clicked ok to reboot. When it rebooted it came up with a black screen asking for a localhost login and password. The only thing the install asked for during the set up was a root password. I typed in root for the localhost login and root password and takes me to the command line as root. Will not start the GUI at start up.
both blades are running RedHat 4 (nahant update 4). Blade A returns Linux 2.6.9-42.ELsmp to the uname command and apache starts up without issues. Blade B returns Linux 2.6.9-89.ELlargesmp to the uname command and fails with the following error: Cannot load /opt/httpd/03/modules/mod_access.so into server: /opt/httpd/03/modules/mod_access.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I have confirmed that the modules are present (actually a symlink to a valid directory) and have the correct permissions. Why can't I get Blade B to start?
I installed Red-hat 5.3. Problem is that it is not showing graphical interface. Only kernel / command prompt is available. I tried startx, then I got this msg. No video BIOS modes for chosen depth. Also showing that: ERROR: Failed to start X server.
I have been using F13 Gnome desktop for a few mouths now but for some reason it won't start X anymore. I get this:

I got an opensuse 10.2 on a aged desktop. Once start, it just stops at command line login prompt. I have to login and type 'startx' to get the GUI. Since I haven't used this computer for over half year. I couldn't remember what I did last time. Any tips for this problem?

We have a Oracle 11.2 database running on Red Hat 5.5. The database have a scheduled job to fetch some files from another server using ftp, and herein lies the problem.he job runs a pl/sql that runs the function in an (by us compiled) external libraryThe ftp-functionality itself is done by using libncftp and it's API's.The process starts correctly, but then trying to login to the actual ftp host, ncftp only reports "Unknown username/password" (which is not the case).I have the exact same code in an executable and when run from an interactive shell, it works fine.So the only thing I can come up with, is there are differences when the process is started by Oracle, rather then being ordinary" process.And I am stuck.If there are any environment variables, paths etc missing when running the extproc-process, how do I find out which?Because the real problem is NOT wrong user or password.
I have slackware64 current installed, my laptop have a nec pci express ubs3.0 port, but when I connect something width startx initiated my box freeze and the caplocks led start to blink, I think maye a kernel panic.
As some people may have seen in my previous thread, I was trying to get X (or XFree86) working in VMware. Right now, I'm in Debian Woody, with startx failing on me yet again. I thought I had everything setup ok, but alas, it seems like I do not.
When I try to mount the cdrom drive and install vmware tools, it get errors listed in picture 1. (Also attached is my boot log, hopefully that can help. Please see boot.txt)
Now, back on topic, I have attached XF86's log. As usual, the error is near the end of the file. I think the root cause of x not starting is this symbol issue, although I really don't know for sure. It seems like startx sort of works, since when I try it, vmware resizes the window as if the proper resolution had been entered, and it was about to start drawing the desktop, but then it goes back to the normal terminal resolution, at the command line.
I recommend that you view these files with any text viewer but windows Notepad, since it can't seem to understand return characters.
I cant mount a directory on red hat 5 from red hat 4 using fstab.I keep getting permission denied.I mount directories on the same red hat 5 sys from other red hat 5 and 2 old HPUX systems using fstab.When I try to telnet to it i get "no route to host."

i was using win xp sp2. i just installed red hat linux by making one of the windows drive as unpartitioned space . i kept windows as my default os .my linux is working properly , but when i goes to start windows , it shows error " windows unable to start , hal.dll file is missing or corrupt".so to solve this problem , i decided to repair windows , but when i isert win xp bootable cd , cd starts booting , after showing messege " setup is inspecting your hard ware " , black screen appears , nd nothing happens after that.what should i do ? i want keep linux as it is and also want to start my windows again . tell me how to repair windows . what should i do to boot win xp bootable cd properly.
I'm basically a linux noobie, and have a problem with one of my machines I use for work. As the title states I am unable to start my xserver, using the startx command I have been using for the past 5 years. It goes to the blue loading screen with the x for a cursor, hangs there for about a min or so then goes back to the command screen. I get an error:

I have tried logging on as root and trying startx again. Same error.
Yesterday I thought I had solved my "Blank screen boot"-issue when I successfully got to the terminal login screen without the screen going black by booting with

Then I read somewhere that booting with "i915.modeset=0" might work. So I removed acpi=off from lilo and added this, and sure enough, I got to terminal login, but I get the same errors with "startx".
I must make it clear that I can successfully perform startx when I boot without "acpi=off" or "i915.modeset=0", I am unable to see the screen but I can hear the KDE fanfare, etc.
I have centos 5.3 installed, while restarting httpd service I get error starting http:/bin/bash line 1 9941 segmentation fault /usr/sbin/httpd. If I stop httpd service and start it will start but if make service httpd restart it give above error.

Per my request my son installed XP and Ubuntu(interested in learning Linux)in my computer. The installation went well and I was able to choose the system I wanted to work in from the menu. It worked for several months but now when I choose Ubuntu from the menu I longer get to the Ubuntu login screen.
