Debian Hardware :: System Hangs On Startx

Dec 20, 2015

I have Lenovo Y500 laptop with 2 Nvidia GT650M.

Today I've installed fresh Debian 8.2 from netinstall.

Then I installed nvidia driver with #sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver nvidia-xconfig

Then I rebooted the system.

When the system turned on I executed #sudo nvidia-xconfig to create Xorg.conf

Then #startx

After startx the screen becomes black, coolers on the video cards start to work faster and the system shuts down.

Fedora :: Microcode - Boot Process Hangs At Startx Time

Sep 4, 2010

Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.

dmesg tells me
Code:
microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x2000032
platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
Linux video capture interface: v2.00
piix4_smbus 0000:00:14.0: SMBus Host Controller at 0xb00, revision 0
microcode: CPU1: patch_level=0x2000032
platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 .....

But the program itself reports
Code:
# microcode_ctl -h
This program is for updating the microcode on Intel processors belonging to the IA32 family - PentiumPro upwards (x86-64 included). It depends on the Linux kernel driver. The website urbanmyth.org/microcode (mentioned by yum info microcode_ctl) clearly indicates that Intel has taken over this microcodecode distribution, and suggests that it is no longer valid for AMD processors.

I found a reference to a kernel configuration flag CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD (as a plausible subsititute for CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL) that possibly belongs in a script in /etc/init.d - but the above context leads me to suspect this is not true any more. In any event, those flags are not mentioned anywhere in my init.d scripts - in fact nowhere in the entire /etc tree. My microcode file exists, and is dated March 23. How do I get it installed? Or is this completely unrelated to my hanging boot problem, as suggested by the "platform microcode" line in the dmesg output? If so, where should I be looking?

Debian :: System Won't Boot - Hangs On Gdm3

Jun 29, 2011

I'm running Debian Squeeze on a Dell Studio Laptop, and this morning my computer woke up and gnome was randomly frozen. I dismissed this as a random error and proceeded to hard-reboot the computer. It now will not boot at all. After multiple attempts, every time the boot process hangs on "Starting GNOME display manager gdm3." I even left it there for 2 hours while I was gone to see if it would get past the hang. It did not, and was still stopped at that same line when I got back. get my system back. I have a live CD available to perform maintenance if anyone has an idea of what's wrong.

Debian :: System Hangs While Rebooting On Debain

Mar 26, 2010

I have Debian (Kernel 2.6.26-2-686) installed on two computers. On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer. When i type reboot at the linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System":

The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this Restart hanging problem.I have also disabled running the acpid script by running Code: update-rc.d -f acpid remove.

Debian Configuration :: Startx Fail On The Testing?

I get the following on startup:

(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: xx

(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

My usual aptitude safe-upgrade routine has not throw any errors. I do remember a libxcb-* package updating (or installing?) on the last run. This is the only relevant package I can recall.

Debian Multimedia :: Using Startx For Multiple X Sessions

Sep 20, 2015

I have been able to log into a tty[1-6] as root or my user, and then startx -- :1, while logged in as myuser and running X on tty7, , but this somehow skips my default desktop manager (GDM3) and boot straight into LXDE (with no menus!). In /etc/X11/default-diplay-manager I have: /usr/sbin/gdm3 ? How do I get startx -- :1 to start a desktop manager?

Related 2nd question: When I did the above startx -- :1, it would start the X session in the same tty (e.g. tty2) where I was logged in when running the startx command. It used to be (in older Linux versions) that startx -- :1 would start an X session on tty8 (and the default would be :0 on tty7). Is this the (new) way things are supposed to work?

May 22, 2015

I downloaded and installed the debian 8 ppc netinstall on my powerbook G4. upon the option of which desktop environment I wanted, I de-selected debian desktop environment (I only selected printer and utilities.) After finishing the install I am prompted with terminal. I logged in and did the following:

Code: Select allnano /etc/apt/sources.list

to include

Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

then did

Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies

then

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install lightdm

and finally

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install synaptic apt-xapian-index gdebi gksu menu
sudo reboot

after reboot the login screen pops up. I log in, and a terminal pops up over the login screen. I think the issue is startx is not working?

Debian Hardware :: Cannot Startx - Module Nvidia Not Found

Jul 31, 2015

After upgrading from Debian Wheezy to Jessie, I figured out I needed to install the nvidia drivers in order to play some Steam games. Went to Debian wiki, installed drivers from there, rebooted, stuck in command line. I can't remember what errors did it give though. After a couple days of searching on the internet the problems and trying different things like purging everything nvidia and reinstalling the drivers in different ways and still no success I thought : Perhaps I installed the wrong nvidia drivers?

Did some research, found out that I might have an Optimus system ( from what I read, I have one because I am in possession of 2 graphic cards, an intel and an nvidia one . Installed Bumblebee, everything worked fine until I rebooted and once again, I couldn't move out of the command line. Tried to startx, error no screens found. Opened log, nothing wrong until it gets to the part of loading the nvidia module, which fails and tells me such module does not exist.

Looked into the module folder, there is no nvidia there. I'm also running a dual-boot Dell Inspiron N5110, with Windows 8.1, which I am currently on and Debian Jessie with GNOME.

Debian :: Woody - Unable To Startx For Vmware Drivers

Jun 13, 2010

As some people may have seen in my previous thread, I was trying to get X (or XFree86) working in VMware. Right now, I'm in Debian Woody, with startx failing on me yet again. I thought I had everything setup ok, but alas, it seems like I do not.

When I try to mount the cdrom drive and install vmware tools, it get errors listed in picture 1. (Also attached is my boot log, hopefully that can help. Please see boot.txt)

Now, back on topic, I have attached XF86's log. As usual, the error is near the end of the file. I think the root cause of x not starting is this symbol issue, although I really don't know for sure. It seems like startx sort of works, since when I try it, vmware resizes the window as if the proper resolution had been entered, and it was about to start drawing the desktop, but then it goes back to the normal terminal resolution, at the command line.

I recommend that you view these files with any text viewer but windows Notepad, since it can't seem to understand return characters.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Launch Desktop By Startx As Normal User

Jan 27, 2016

As a long time FreeBSD user, I consider give Debian a try upon the arrival of my new laptop. However, seems I couldn't launch desktop environment by simply typing startx on console as on FreeBSD. I can start desktop through a display manager like lightdm on Stretch, which is quite easy and straightforward, but I still prefer the "startx way".

I setup Debian Stretch on Virtualbox (4.3.43) using official debian-installer, login as a normal user, and install xfce4 via Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4. The installation of xfce4 was very fast and it also introduced xorg related packages here. Then I edit my $HOME/.xinitrc as follows:

Code: Select allexec startxfce4

I typed startx to expect Xfce desktop but got the errors complained instead: [URL]....

while the xorg.0.log had the following contents: [URL]....

So, I failed to start xfce4 by startx as a normal user and had to install and start lightdm to go into desktop, but when I login as root, it worked and launched Xfce4 by startx without any problem. I couldn't figure it out now.

Debian Multimedia :: Select Multiple Desktop Environment Using Startx?

Jan 25, 2011

I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

#!/bin/sh
# fix dbus problem
eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
# start session
exec startfluxbox

[Code]...

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mythbuntu System Hangs After Regular System Update: "out Of Memory" Errors

Aug 4, 2010

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.

1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.

2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.

3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"

After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

Hardware :: System Hangs With New RAM (2gb)

Dec 27, 2010

I've got Asus M4AT78T-E motherboard, and so far, I was using 2x1GB of Corsair 1333 Mhz RAM. I decided to change it for 1x2GB OCZ 1600Mhz CL7 memory.

I removed current modules, and installed new one into red colored (they recommend it in user manual) slots. After start, computer hangs at random time, I mean, it could be when Grub loads (while going to select memtest), or even while POST test. (After detecting some SATA device).

Is it possible to run that memory on my computer? Is memory corrupted? I have possibility to use it on another system, but it will be about in next 2-3 weeks, and I'd like to have it here.
