Ubuntu :: No Sound After Using ~/.xinitrc With Startx

Aug 21, 2010

I am using a custom minimal install of Ubuntu 10.04 I built up from scratch using mini.iso. All went well till I decided to add .xinitrc to my home dir and autostart.sh (for openbox) to ~/.config/openbox in order to automatically launch a number of common programs when I load up my desktop using startx. I use alsa for my sound server; I installed alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss pretty much first thing after installing my new system and sound was working perfectly up until a few hours ago. What gets me is that alsa ought to be loading up as I boot into Linux, I can't see how xinitrc or autostart.sh can even affect it, but it seems switching to using those has caused some sort of issue with it, as I am now without sound. Everything else worked fine witht he change, my desktop is loading just how I want it now, all the rest of my sorftware is working fine as best I can tell, it's just the sound that is now borked. Has anyone else had this issue, I've searched all over with no luck so far. If it helps, I am not using any desktop environments, just openbox with a small handful of hand picked packages, I've been running this system for nearly 2 weeks now without any issues until now, and this one has me stumped.

Debian Multimedia :: Modify A File Called ~/.xinitrc, But It Does Not Exist?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm getting openbox up and running on squeeze. I performed a netinstall and did a simple apt-get openboxI need to modify a file called ~/.xinitrc, but it does not exist. I read that I can copy one over from /var/x11r6/lib/xinitrc, but the /x11r6/ directory doesn't exist either. I've installed xorg, but the directory still eludes me. A package search yields nothing useful. I am using the SLiM display/login manager, which I believe calls startx, which should theoretically generate the ~/.xinitrc file.

Ubuntu :: No Sound In KDE When Started By Startx While Working Fine When Started By Kdm/gdm

Dec 14, 2010

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx

Ubuntu :: Type Startx After Login To Get To GUI Desktop ?

Mar 8, 2011

Whenever I load up my computer, Ubuntu comes up with a command line asking for my user name and password. I can type all that in, and get into the system, but it's still in the command line. If I type startx, it will then load the GUI desktop just fine. Is there any particular reason it wont' boot straight into a GUI login screen?

I originally had Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 7, and was having this problem. When I installed Ubuntu fresh on an external hdd, the issue went away. However, I recently formatted the hdd and re-installed Ubuntu and now it's doing this again.

I went into the terminal and found that my PATH variable was wrong so I edited my .bashrc file, adding Code:export PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/gamesthis seemed to fix the problem in the terminal now I can access all of the binaries normally, but I still can login with the graphical login and I still cant startx.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Doesn't Complete Boot Up....makes Me Use Startx

Jul 3, 2011

I must have deleted a file or done something wrong because now when I start ubuntu11.04, my startup stalls at the blackscreen where it lists the output of current operations. Mine seems to stall at checking pulseaduio or stall at checking cron. I am not totally certain of the phrases but anyway, my only way to log in is to ctrl+alt F1 and sign in that way followed by startx. I copied some exact info down and here is where my computer usually stalls:

Screen says, Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [ok]
Checking battery state... [ok]
Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok]

This is the usual stopping stop for my computer.

If I am using ssh to connect to the box, or vnc even, and I try to run the program I get an error that no CUDA device is enabled. I have to go over to the machine and physically log in, and type "startx" to get it to detect the device. It can also be another use on the box using an X session, but one has to be started soemwhere on the box to get CUDA working. Is there a way to "startx" over an SSH session so that this will work and I dont have to go over and log in?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 StartX Does Not Work On Dell Latitude E5510

Jan 10, 2011

I'm trying to install the magnificent ubuntu 10.10 on my brand new Dell LATITUDE E5510. The installation works fine. I installed it with a working internet connexion ... so the drivers should be there. Then when booting, the GUI does not start I get the console instead...

I tried several things:
- run startx --> I get a blank screen where even CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work anymore

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
--> just returns without anything on the screen, no error no nothing

- run in failsafeX mode, I get:
Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself.

Then I get the login page but it doesn't go any further, when I type my login/password it comes back to the login page...

When I do:
Code:
lspci | grep VGA
I get :
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev02)

That's all I could see... apart from that I'm not getting any error messages and I'm really stuck.. I'm running on intel Celeron 32 bit, I have checked the checksum of my CD...

If I attempt to hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace it does nothing however if I were to run init 5 it launches me into the Gnome Display Manager and expects me to login and if I run init 3 in the x-terminal it shutdowns the x-server and returns me to the command line interface.

Can you use startx in some way to optionally start another environment? If not, can it be set up to start that graphical umm.. like start chooser screen? I don't know all the terms but its the screen that comes up that you enter your username/password and you can select which environment you like.

Ubuntu :: Sound: Mic Doesn't Work - Audio Input Level Graphically Shown In Sound Preferences Shows No Fluctuations In Sound

Aug 3, 2010

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.

Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

My usual aptitude safe-upgrade routine has not throw any errors. I do remember a libxcb-* package updating (or installing?) on the last run. This is the only relevant package I can recall.
