After the latest update manager was run. Skype no longer appears in my panel when launched. A window opens to log in, but if I close that window skype disappears instead of minimizing to the panel like it used to. When I click the launcher it tells me there is another instance of skype running. (oh really?) Where?

I run / activate Skype.. 7 every so often (more frequently than not), when i'm not using it, it "dissapears" from my panel & i can't open it to chat with anyone. though i do see when people log in / log off - I'm not sure if they try & contact me or not.
QUERY :- What causes skype to drop off my active panel. Where does it go, & how do i get it back / active ? also how can I prevent it from dropping off. Ps - i cant re-activate a new skype, as the 1st one is still running.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's a summary of my problem: When using Skype, it's possible to close the gui of the application only. When doing this, the Skype process itself doesn't close; it hides in gnome-panel's notification-area.
Now, when opening the Skype application again (e.g. by clicking on a Skype launcher), Skype starts a whole new process. This is shown to the user as a new Skype tray icon being generated, as well as a new gui window being created.
What I'd like to do is as follows:
I'd like to replace the Skype launcher with a script that would * recognize if there is a Skype process running if yes, bring up that * instance of Skype if not, start Skype normally
Now, I've read some of the source code of gnome-panel to try and see how it's done. From what I've gathered, a button_press_event is bound to some function that probably (am unsure of this) sends a signal of some kind to Skype.

I have difficulty with my webcam and Skype. I can see the other person but she can't see me. From a previous thread: Are you sure your camera isnt working? Supported hardware drivers are in the kernel usually. Test: press alt+f2, type gstreamer-properties go to the video tab and see if your camera is listed as a device. If yes, press the test button. This test was OK. I could see my face on the screen.

I tried this. It launches Skype OK, but the little window that should show what my webcam sees, appears full of black and white static.
i just installed ubuntu netbook remix 10.04.1 on an aspire one 532h netbook, and everything works great except i cant get the mic to work with skype. i know the mic is working correctly because i tried it in sound recorder and was able to record and playback my voice.all sound levels are where they should be, and everything seems to be in order. i'm using the latest beta of skype also. i installed pavucontrol but that didn't do anything.because the mic is working, i'm beginning to think it may be a problem with skype.

That was the aim actually, when I decided to install Slackware 13.1 instead of the Win 7 on my new laptop.And here is one of the two things that I have to do now, to make the system completely the same as I want it to be.I use a black theme - Audacious - on my XFCE on Slackware 13.1. And the skype doesn't use the theme. It stays originally light.
(At work I'm with Mint with LXDE, the same theme. Exactly. And the skype uses it. And looks very good ...)So, I tried the options in the skype options menu - General - Choose style. But no option has the desired effect.I plan to uninstall skype and either install it again from slackbuilds, or just download the static (or the dynamic) one from skype.com. But, if there is something else I can do - I'd prefer this way.PS: There is something curious also - OpenOffice on the Mint distro doesnt' use the theme. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get skype to work on my new system. It seems to install, but trying to run it I get an error message naming a missing dependency. Searching for this with yum whatprovides and installing the result worked in one case, but for the next one, yum install <package containing missing item> returns a few errors of the form:
package <name-version>.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than <package-version>.fc12.i686) is already installed Is there any way around this? I'd like to get skype working, but am having no luck at the moment. I'd prefer not to remove the .x86_64 packages if I can avoid it in case that breaks something else.
I have this weird problem because I upgraded to Lucid lynx beta, and my ATI drivers don't work anymore... no support yet I guess and because of the broken package it doesn't let me install skype what should I do? And by the way do you have any idea why when I accept to show or view webcams it cancels shortly before it shows.. Any ideas why?

Two days ago connected my laptop and TV, in order to use the TV as a second monitor, to watch a football match (I only have IPTV). Only thing I had to do was to go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and switch (in the hardware tab) my Internal Audio Hardware from Analog Stereo Duplex to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input.
So after the match I switched it back to Analog Stereo Duplex and proceeded to skype with my girlfriend. Problem was, the mic stopped working. It works just fine in 'Input' tab of my sound preferences, as well as in sound recorder. She, in skype, heard nothing but static. Test call doesn't work either. Now I've done all the usual stuff, Skype isn't allowed to automatically adjust mixer levels and my mic is already boosted. I've reinstalled skype and everything. I'm running out of ideas.
At the moment the Android version of Skype doesn't support video chat at the moment, just audio.There are lots of apps in Android for video chat (Oovoo, Tango), but I can't find one that will allow me to video chat from the phone to an Ubuntu laptop.

However, if I open xpdf in the terminal, xpdf launches and the terminal waits for it to exit... my question is, what is the command to hide the terminal and just launch the application?

After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.

Sound recording from build-in mic was fine in skype and cheese after i installed UNR in my Acer Aspire One 110L in early December last year.
But somehow, i just realized that my sound recording was not functioning when i use skype this morning.
(i don't know since when this problem occur as i never use skype and cheese in past few weeks and i did update a few time from synaptic and install ubuntu-boot kernel)
just now i remove ubuntu-boot and reinstall the 2.6.31-17-generic kernel and run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio
but skype and cheese still does not record from build in microphone but only record from external microphone.
One weird thing is Sound recorder do record from both the build-in mic and external mic.
i tried "parec -r test.wav" and "parec -p test.wav" and it also record from both mic.
Anyone know how to configure my netbook so that the internal mic work on skype?
I am running Xubuntu Lucid 10.04 on a Sony Vaio. I recently dropped $100 on a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, on the recommendation on the ubuntu wiki [URL].. that it would "work perfectly" in Skype. In Skype, it did nothing. No Audio, no video, light wouldn't even come on. Essentially a $100 dollar paperweight. I really think someone should correct this misleading information on the wiki.
I followed the kludge listed here [URL].. to get the video to work. By executing Skype with the shell script listed in the first post, I could get the video test to work, but no audio, and when I tried to call someone, when I turned on video, Skype quit suddenly. For the record, yes, I unmuted the device in the Sound Mixer in the top right corner.
Later on, I tested it with guvcview, and the cam worked perfectly in that program. It's only Skype that doesn't know what to do with it. When I execute Skype in Terminal I get the following output repeating over and over again:

i have been able to get my webcam working in Skype by doing the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype command and installing v4l2ucp but it doesn't stick. So next time i boot it is like i didn't do anything. I have read a few things on it on this forum and i am not sure what to do next. Is there a conflict with my nvidia video card? I only installed Ubuntu 10 a week ago i think.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a little confuse regarding how one launches tmux. When I launch my terminal (current gnome-terminal), I would like to have tmux up and running. I'm currently doing this by calling "tmux" in my .zshenv (kind of like .bashrc in bash). This does in fact launch tmux, but has some annoying side effects. First, hitting Ctrl-D to exit the shell, only kills tmux, and leaves the tmux-less gnome-terminal still running. An additional Ctrl-D will kill that as well. Second, when ssh into a box with this setup, I get a second, nested instance of tmux. I don't want tmux to launch again when I ssh. Is this the right approach, how should tmux be launched usually?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Apache2 v. 2.2.17 on Ubuntu,and I am trying to get it to work with Ruby (v 1.8.7). I have followed the instructions on the Ubuntu site and ended up installing Phusion Passenger v 3.0.7, making the suggested changes to the httpd.conf file.
When I launch Apache2 I now get the message:
