I'm using ubuntu 10.4 and accidently removed the notification area from the top panel. Since then, I haven't been able to retrieve the icon. As I've read in many threads, I've added a new panel and added a notification error, but the area stays empty. (see screenshot) My other icons like the volume control and the amarok icon were gone as well, but setting up a new indicator applet did the trick. Still, the skype icon won't come back, I've even removed Skype and reinstalled it, but nothing changed. how I could get the icon back again?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Skype only because it is necessary to Pidgin to handle the Skype service/protocol. I use Pidgin for many protocols included the IRC, so I don't need Skype icon in the system tray at all. Honestly I hate Skype, but unfortunately it seems that all the world use it. how to take off that terrible icon/indicator/applet from the systray. I searched in all system to find a configuration file, I opened few named Skype using vi to avoid to damage them, but I have not found nothing interesting for my scope. PS: don't tell me how I will switch on or off Skype, because a plug-in of Pidgin do it w/o user interaction.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using the fully updated version of Ubuntu 10.4. The volume icon is missing from the top panel and adding the "notification area" does not do anything - I can double-click the icon, or drag it over, and nothing appears in the panel. Adding the "Indicator Applet" also has the same result. I do not know what applet to add, nor do I know why the volume icon is missing. The power icon, the network icon, the mail icon, and the rest of the applets are all there - only the volume icon is missing.
Also, when I press "fn + pg up or pg dn," it would usually change the volume and display a notification showing that the volume changed. This does not happen anymore: no notification, no sound change. I can still hear audio, but can not change the level.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, and now I'm experiencing some problems with the displaying of panels and icons that I'm hoping someone can help me to fix.
Situation: Running 11.04 in latest virtualbox (4.06, with guest additions installed) on a macbook pro running snow leopard (10.6.7). I'm in gnome classic (no effects) because I'm not yet used to gnome 3 and compiz doesn't run all that well for me in this virtualization set-up. But the problem, described below, is consistent from gnome 3 to classic (with effects) to classic (without effects).
Problem: When I first log in after a reboot, everything looks great in the default settings (ambiance theme, I think), but after ~ 15 seconds, the panels and icons revert to an odd looking theme that I don't particularly care for. And trying to change the settings in the "Appearance" preferences is of no help, i.e., I can change the themes, but the panels and icons remain in a stock, old-school gnome-ish theme.
Just installed openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and not expert about it yet, I am experiencing two problems.
Skype: just installed 2.1.0.81-suse.i586rpm, starting it I get just the icon jumping on the desktop a bit and nothing else.
If I try with the command line, this is the result:
After that, I dont have preview about stored file images and even online, Google Images does not showing preview, just colored strips; if I go with the mouse on it, the image comes out.
I'm running Kubuntu Meerkat. If I set skype to start minimized automatically, it seems that it's running but there's no way to get to it. It shows up in the process list but there's no icon for it in the taskbar or anywhere else on the screen. Even worse, I can't just kill and restart it; if I kill it, it just comes back. If I issue the skype command from the K menu or from a command line, I get a complaint that another instance is already running.

My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.
Here is what was installed:
