Ubuntu :: After Adding 'killall Gnome-panel' To The Startup Applications Does The Panel Fail To Load Altogether

Dec 4, 2010

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.

Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.

I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

Ubuntu :: Netbeans Menu Doesn't Go On Global Menu?

May 8, 2011

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

Ubuntu :: Applications Panel Bar Error

Sep 12, 2010

I was customizing my desktop and I decided I wanted to try out a dock so I installed docky, cairo dock, and awn via ubuntu tweak. Fortunately for me, docky decided it wanted to boot at startup. When this happened, my applications panel bar appeared right in the middle of the screen. So I uninstalled docky through ubuntu tweak and it seemed to resolve the problem. Unfortunately for me, I kept trying out the other docks. Opening cairo dock brought about the same problem for the applications panel bar. Something that should be noted is that I do not expand my panel bar. This problem doesn't happen if the panel bar is expanded.I've uninstalled AWN and Cairo Dock via ubuntu tweak but the problem remains.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't See Windows 7 - Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

Jun 10, 2010

i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Being a silver-surfer I frequent an old fogies site called "Beyond the realms of AOL - forumotion.net" where we share memories and the like. The site (message board) has a rolling menu which up until recently worked on my computer ... now it doesn't! When I log-in, the rolling menu pops up for a second and then disappears. I get the feeling that one of the regular upgrades has removed a plugin or something from my system. I have Adobe Flash 10 (latest version) installed ... perhaps I'm missing something! It has to be my system because the rolling menu works perfectly well using Windows XP.

General :: Main Menu Doesn't Show My App Launcher (desktop File) / Why Is So?

Aug 6, 2010

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...

I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
