Debian Multimedia :: Skype - Couldn't Get Into Sound Settings - Froze ?

Nov 30, 2010

I have a Debian Sid x86_64 installation on my laptop. I used to use skype a lot when I was on ArchLinux in chrooted 32bit environment. Nowdays, I tried running skype straight on the 64bit environment, when I finally got it running, I couldn't get into sound settings, it froze right when I clicked the Sound options... So I decided to make the 32 bit environment, so I used debootstrap and schroot and now I have fully functional 32bit chrooted system. It does the same thing all over again! it drives me crazy... I should probably tell you, I use pulseaudio. This makes it a little hard to like the distro for me... I used to be an ArchLinux user for quite few years, but I didn't want to solve so many things every day, so I went with debian

Debian :: Error When Starting - Completely Froze - Couldn't Do Anything On The Desktop

Sep 10, 2011

Yesterday, I was doing some work (Don't worry, I didn't lose anything), and I restored a terminal I had open, and it completely froze! I couldn't do anything on the desktop, so I tried rebooting. Doing that resulted in an error when booting. It would say "bin/sh : Can't mount" or something like that (Can't quite remember) not too long after trying to start up, and it would leave me stuck with some weird terminal. The only command I know on this new terminal is reboot. What should I do?

Note that I just installed Debian two nights ago and it was working perfectly fine until last night...

The error says "/bin/sh: Can't access tty; job control turned off"

Debian Multimedia :: No Sound Through Headphones With Skype

Jan 15, 2011

I've installed Skype on my Debian Lenny AMD64 system using method describe in [URL] . I also installed pulseaudio using aptitude, but not sure that this required.

I can sign in to Skyp, call out to my local phone number; phone rings. But I have no sound through my Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB headset and no sound is heard on the phone.

If I click on Applications/sound & video/pulseaudio volume control, I get:

Connection failed: Connection refused

1) Am I missing a configuration step? If so what do I need to do where?

2) If not configuration, is there another issue that needs to be resolved? What? Where?

3) Why do I see Connection refused when I clike on pulseaudio volume control?

Note: I tried to listen to npr, but no sound there either.

I tried to boot it in safe mode and umm.. it froze? or crashed? well it was on the black screen with the blinking dot for like 20 mins before i gave up on it (Hiting enter or esc or anything didn't work). There was a key symbol on my panel before skype acted up(It closed and disabled something.. i've never seen it before). Adobe also crashed, and linux did a small update (nothing with skype).

Debian :: Skype And Pulseaudio Settings ?

Jul 1, 2010

I installed skype 2.1 beta and pulse audio. Just installed the packages and it worked. Surprisingly. Problem is that Skye now selects pulseaudio for microphone, out and ringer. No problem it actually set it up to my logitech headset which is by default almost right. It set it up to use my logitech microphone and headset speakers for talking, which is great. But I want to switch my ringer from headset speakers to main computer speakers. Anyone know where this can be done. Skype only lets me select pulseaudio (locla server) for all three. Yet somehow it knows to use my logitech headset for talking. But I want to direct my ringing of incoming calls to main speakers. pavucontrol does not let me do this. Anyone has an idea of how to do this? If there is a graphical application that can do this, please let me know.

Used ubuntu for years and loved it. recent bugs in flash and loggin out and others made me try debian for extra stability and security at the risc of loosing myself in the complexity of debian as it's no plug and play here. So far seems to be very similar in use to ubuntu, surprisingly. Running nvidia-xconfig seems to be the only difference. So far I have been able to figure things out to make it work, we will see how I do in the long run. Ubuntu was sure easy.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound. How To Restore Default Sound Driver/settings

I have no sound, is it possible to restore the default sound drivers/settings in 10.04?It was work well before except for one issue, I couldn't get mic in for Rosetta Stone using wine. I have followed so many howto's to try and get Rosetta Stone working and then my sound working again.I think this is my main problem I upgraded alsa to "alsa-driver-1.0.23". Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia GT210 Sound Only In Stereo And Couldn't Get It Working In XBMC

Jun 7, 2011

I am at the end of my tether in trying to get sound setup on my Ubuntu installation. I have tried many different 'fixes' that people have suggested, but none seem to work!

My setup is as follows:
> HP Proliant Microserver
> Ubuntu 10.10
> Zotac GT210 card
> HDMI from GFX card to AV amp
> 5GB Ram

What I want to be able to do is:

> Play music from FLAC files I have ripped in either stereo or sudo 5.1
> Play DVD iso files that I have ripped in the audio format found on the original discs (DTS etc)

I have managed to get sound working before, but only in stereo and I couldn't get it working in XBMC (not the sound from the main movie I chose anyway). I have since completely broken the sound after trying various things found on the interweb and cannot get it back.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype / No Incoming Call Sound?

Jul 14, 2010

I'm having a problem with Skype. Whenever someone calls me, the incoming call popup shows up, but I can hear no sound playing. Further, if I go in Options/Notifications and try to test the incoming call event, I'm having the same problem.

The .wav file exists and Skype can play it back. I have tested this by assigning that particular .wav to a different event, where it works as expected. Additionally, the other events, e.g. outgoing call, appear to be working normally. This would suggest, that the problem lies with the incoming call event, rather than the particular sound.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype - Select A Particular Sound Device?

Oct 1, 2010

i know skype on Linux is crap but i have no choice as i now have only Ubuntu installed on this pc & I NEED SKYPE.so with the new version how do i select a particular sound device.i ask because skype only lets me select a specific sound 'platform' (pulseaudio).i have a motherboard with on-board sound & a USB voip phone (us robotics) and it the usb voip phone i want to use solely for skype

so is there something i can tell pulse audio that i want skype to ONLY use the usb phone or do i have to use the stupid sound preferences to change the system wide device to the usb phone which makes the whole thing a hindrance because i have no idea when someone calls me & when i have to quickly change the settings then turn off music then try to answer the call the person calling has gone!!!i like to have music playing in the background out of my hifi & the error noises come out of the usb phone as well when this is selected & to be honest it makes having a pc setup with multiple devices pointless and a hindrance

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype 2.2.0.25 No Sound No Chat No Call 11.04?

May 9, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 x32 Today I started Skype and I couldn't hear the Skype logging sound. Nevertheles I could see the contacts online. When I tried to write messages in the chat they couldn't receive them. When I tried to call nothing worked. After that it seemed that Skype was completely blocked. I clicked with the right button on the green icon of Skype and chose "quit" but it wouldn't close. 1 I logged off from Ubuntu and on again. I opened Skype. I made right click in the green icon and chose "Options"

2 I went to the "Sound Devices" menu in the left part of the window

3 I removed the tick for "Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels"

4 I closed Skype and opened it again and the sound problem was gone.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Mic In Skype Works Temporarily Only - Sound Very Chirpy

Dec 5, 2009

I have quite a strange problem with Skype and Opensuse. First problem was that when I used microphone on Audigy 4 (from some reason recognised as Audigy 2) the sound which people received from me was very chirpy. This problem was solved easily, I just turned my on-board sound system on and started using micorphone from integrated card. And here comes my weird problem. Microphone works all right, but only for short period. After some time after I start talking to someone on Skype the microphone turns itself off, but I can still hear my interlocutors. The only solution is to go to Yast and restart sound system or to restart whole computer, both of which are not real solutions, but well, they sort of work. I'm using Opensuse 11.2 x64.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype Intermittently Stops Its Sound Connection?

Mar 9, 2010

On my Acer laptop, I have Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS and a static version of the Skype Beta 2.1, specifically version 2.1.0.81. I recently made the upgrade to it from an earlier version because I needed to have the screensharing feature to work. Previously Screensharing from others was showing up in a tiny window I couldn't resize. But the Skype Beta 2.1 works fine regarding screensharing.

But the problem I'm having now is that the sound intermittently goes away, but only for Skype. It seems to go away if I walk away from my laptop for a long time. When this occurs, I cannot hear or record sound through Skype, but it works fine through other applications. If I shut Skype back down once it is in this failed state, and come back in, then it remains in this failed state. The only resolution is a reboot, and then it's fine again.

The only thing I can think might be the issue is the Gnome Power Manager, perhaps? I mean, my fan on my laptop spins down if I walk away for a long time, so I know some kind of laptop power management is engaging.

I tried following this guide:

[URL]

And it suggested removing PulseAudio and using esound instead. Well, I tried that and rebooted, and my desktop wouldn't boot properly. So, I did CTRL+ALT+F2, logged in, and then did "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop". All was well again, but unfortunately it brought back PulseAudio again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Settings Resetting

Dec 10, 2010

10.10 x64. This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences. Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.

To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script. My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Settings Are Not Saved?

May 7, 2011

I am running a dedicated audio PC (Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel Atom 525) with a Juli@ sound card. I had everything set up and working great up until I accidentally pulled the sound card out of its slot while the computer was running. After that, the computer no longer recognized the Juli@ card.

I managed to fix the basic problem by following the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide- deleting and reinstalling ALSA is what did the trick. The only problem remaining is that the computer no longer remembers the output settings in the Sound Preferences dialog. The setting stays for as long as the computer is on, but as soon as I turn it off and reboot it, the sound output setting reverts back to the internal audio. I tried 'sudo alsactl store 1', but this does not work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Keeps Losing Settings Every Reboot?

Jan 4, 2010

My system (Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome Desktop) keeps 'forgetting' my sound settings. every day I have to go into sound preferences and select a different hardware device setting and then change it back to the right one in order for it to work. For instance my sound goes out of my onboard intel based sound via optical to my amp and so the hardware setting for this is IEC598 output + analog stereo input But everytime I boot their is no sound (and hence no light coming through the optical cable) so then I'll change it to Analog surround and the light comes out so then I can change it back to the 1st setting and it works again. Hope that makes sense, I have had this problem and also my video settings have been 'forgotten' and samba also won't work ever since about 4 days ago when the system updated, everything was working fine before that (i have run update manager since and everything is up to date)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Revert To Default Sound Settings

Oct 25, 2010

Since I installed the system-wide equalizer I've been having some problems with my sound system. The problem is it has changed some system settings (visible in gconf) and after I uninstall it, I can't change any sound settings, except the volume in a given application, but the system-wide volume doesn't work, even the tray icon shows three dashes next to the little speaker and the sound settings won't start. I'd like to revert the settings to the original after removing the equalizer, as at this moment I can't change any settings even with the equalizer enabled. Is there any way to reset the sound settings

(I suppose it must be in gconf, but I don't know what the values should be. Currently the musicaudiosink settings are: audioresample ! audioamplify amplification=0 ! pulsesinkv)

Those are the settings that definitely changed after installing the equalizer, but they obviously won't change back after uninstalling it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Acquire Sound Drivers And Settings Panel

Jun 7, 2010

I'm using on board sound so i have the correct device selected. I have sound but my problem comes when trying to adjust the balance and sub etc. I can move the subwoofer on its own and set the fade on its own but if i try to change the balance the fade moves with it (not always in the same way, sometimes it fades to the rear, some times to the front). Also, when i move the master volume the subwoofer level follows it.Is there a fix for this problem?

Also how can i acquire the sound drivers and settings panel that where in 9.04 if not? will they still be comparable with 10.04?
