I have installed Centos 5.5 on my PC and now since I am new to Linux environment I do not know how to set up Internet connection for it. I have laptop which runs on Windows and I access internet by typing in username and password for Wireless Internet (LAN cable from laptop to adapter and from adapter another cable to antenna which is outside.

But the VMWare web access page where we can login to console and create virtual machines doesn't require internet access.I am a newbie to linux and also network issues.How to figure out what is the problem? View 6 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.
I installed CentOS 5.6 (kernel: 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5) with X Window on my HP Compaq 6710b. I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.
However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection. I tried to use lynx and I got the error message: "Unable to connect to remote host". I am a complete newbie in Linux and I tried to google and search for solution within centos.org but I could not find.
I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. Would choosing the option upgrade on existing Linux partition do the job? Is there a chance I loose my data files when the upgrade is done? I recently bougt an Asus N61DA with Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, so I made the Ubuntu CD, just like it said. Then I inserted the CD and restarted the computer. I started the installer (ubuntu 10.10 64-bit) and chose the option where it says "install ubuntu alongside other operating systems", or something like that. So, the installation started, but then I lost the internet connection, and the installation stopped.I re-connected the computer, but the installation still wouldn't continue. I've tried looking info up online about the issue and many people say to do an ifconfig -a to get the MAC Address and so forth. How to get the connection working to use the internet with Fedora?
I plan to install F12 (Fedora-12-i386DVD.iso) in a location where there's no Internet connection, thus I'd like to previously download the updates in order to install them once completed the installation. Luckily I have a second machine running 9.10 and could get onto the net for assistance.
I tried all sorts of modifications to sysctl, modeprobe files, etc and checked all over google for a fix.
It appears that the IPv6 settings are part of the kernel, in this case I am going back to 9.10 and staying with 9.10 until this IPv6 is sorted out. Most home routers do not have IPv6 connections, only IPv4. This lack of Internet connection has happened with both server and desktop. I do not know the reasoning behind this decision but I will not be upgrading to 10 until IPv6 is sorted for me as a home user.
Able to boot with different partitions of a 320 GB hard drive with Windows Server 2008, Ubuntu server 9.10 plus Ubuntu desktop 9.10 but IPv6 with 10.10 installs on the respective server and desktop partitions does not allow a lan connection to the router. All are 64bit downloads.

I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 3610 notebook. 2 GB RAM. This notebook had Internet access previously via Windows XP (now erased). Here is the partitioned drive. Two ext4 partitions for ubuntu "/" and "/home". Two ntfs partitions possibly for Windows. I have booted up the fresh installation of ubuntu 10.10. I had some glitch where I saw "Operating system not found' on booting from HDD and I wondered if this was due to failing drive.
But I've run a full test using Disk Utility and it shows as healthy. This message has gone away (I don't know why) and I can boot into ubuntu. The problem I'm trying to solve is simply no internet connection. Here are some outputs from commands ..

I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLoss of internet connection after upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 Like the title says, I lost my internet connection after upgrading my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 8.10.I used the downloaded automated method. It appeared to work fine on its initial reboot into 8.10. But I noticed the internet icon indicated loss of connection. Even so, I was still able to browse the net through Firefox. But then when I rebooted the next day the opposite was true: the connection icon indicated connection, but Firefox would not actually connect, nor would update manager. It has been like this since. This is a dual boot machine, and the Windows XP Pro side still connects to the internet as usual, no problems.So how can I make my new 8.10 system connect to the internet?
