I want to connect to the internet on my fedora core 6 OS, i am using an adsl modem(Model no. : SmartAX MT841) which requires setting up a username and password. I am a newbie to linux, so i am clueless and just cant stop wondering what to do!
View 4 RepliesI use ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala as my desktop OS. My internet connection is creating problems these days, ever since I started downloading torrents for iso files. Whenever the downloads in transmission client is running, the internet gets disconnected abruptly, and even my other downloads in d4x stops. On using the plog command in the terminal, it shows the following:

I dont understand much of it, as am a new user using linux systems from only a few months ago, can't find out. Also on closing the transmission client the other downloads in d4x run perfectly well and so does my internet connection.
I am new to linux.Use broadband wire-line internet connection that requires username and password. Using GUI in Administration--Network I see realtek 8129 fast ethernet configured. However when I try to create new connection and activate it, it shows could not activate. eth0 inactive.
I am able to use my broadband connection in windows XP.
I have problems connecting on the net with my ubuntu. My driver is Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 AirForce One 54 I can see access points and i connected to access point called Zone 9 but the problem is that i was on XP entire life and i was connecting via broadband connection that requires username & password after connecting to access point So tell me how do I connect to internet on this ubuntu stuff

SET failed on device ttyUSB): no such device

I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

One installer comes with this device for Fedora, I have installed it.There were some issues while starting this application on fedora. But after seeing some threads for SELinux, it had been solved.Now, when I run this software, a window appears. If i clicked connect, it does show connecting and once connected automatically firefox opens.
But i am not able to access internet. After some time software shows device is in sleep mode due to inactivity. Network connectivity icon on launch panel on fedora shows network is connected.I had similar problem with Mandriva 10..

My flatmates are all able to connect. However, I am able to connect from work both wirelessly and through an ethernet cable.
