General :: Configure OpenVPN And Internet Bridging In CentOS?:
Feb 14, 2011
I only have very basic understanding on how it works.This question may have been asked so many times, and honestly I've tried so many tutorials and have read a lot of articles but it all didn't worked. I may be too stupid to have this done, or it is just the lack of knowledge.
Here it goes,I have a VPS with a host which runs OpenVZ in LA. I want to create a VPN tunnel to the VPS and tunnel all my internet traffic to the VPS. Can somebody please help me out on the step-by-step?
I was once able to configure the VPS to run OpenVPN and my client pc was able to connect to it, but the internet connection is still thru with my local connection. Did it with a tutorial too. I would also like to ask, The VPS has 512mb of RAM, I was wondering how many clients can it handle at the same time.

I'm trying to set up an openVPN server for a small office. I've gotten the server running, and configured keys, and been able to connect to the server. The trouble is that once I connect with my windows machine to the server, I am unable to bridge through to the www. I have combed through so many settings and tutorials, and I am confused as to how to set up the interfaces configuration file. Here's a sample of my routing table:
Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.8.0.2 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0
XXX.XXX.XXX.0 * 255.255.255.128 U 0 0 0 eth0
10.8.0.0 10.8.0.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0
default XXX.XXX.XXX.1 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0
How should I be configuring this so that when I'm in the VPN I can get through to the internet?

Just curious to see what everyone's opinion on using routing vs. bridging for openVPN. I'm installing openVPN on a linux box that I'm using as a router. What I was wondering was your opinions on which one of these two options to use.

My roommate has a slow ADSL provider, and i have a much faster cable connection. He has his own residential gateway, and as do i. The goal i am trying to accomplish is to share 2 printers (1 behind each residential gateway) and also files between computers on the different LAN segments, but not share ISPs or DHCP servers.
Thus far, i have configured my residential gateway's DHCP server to have control of the 192.168.1.0/24 network and his gateway's DHCP server controls the 192.168.0.0/24 network. We've got a Slackware 13.0 Linux box connected on the 192.168.0.0/24 network which currently just serves a web page and accepts e-mail for a domain. My knowledge of networking fails me here as I'm not sure what piece of equipment i would need to buy to solve this puzzle (bridge or router). I know iproute2 can do wonderful things on Linux, and i figure it would be easier to just shove a NIC or 2 in the Linux box and make it do what i need instead of buying more networking equipment.

I am confused as to what is going on with a particular box that I am working with.As you can see in the attached ifconfig print out, one eth port is basically only used as a output while the other is only really used as an input.I connect to the box via 10.20.40.104 for ssh,ftp,http,etc.I just want to know the name of what is happening (is it bonding,bridging?) and maybe some information about where it is configured.I looked in modprobe.conf
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1E:C9:EE:5A:91
inet addr:10.20.40.105 Bcast:10.20.40.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

After restoring from a hardware failure, I cannot get bridging to work again. I reinstalled the host version 5.5, and copied the .img file back onto the rebuilt machine. I also had the network scripts and iptables backed up. Through virt-manager I re-attached the virtual machine, and when I boot it, I get a MAC address conflict on the vm's eth0; "Device eth0 has a different MAC address than expected". The vm had a static ip address.
[root@trngvh ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
DEVICE=eth1
HWADDR=00:24:81:E4:FC:02

Problem: Can't get bridging to work properly.
I'll start by saying that most of this is built inside of a 64bit ESXi 4.1.0 server. Should be obvious by the picture below.
Trying to set up a bridged CentOS box. Ultimate goal is to set up a Transparent Firewall. The machine labeled 'Desktop' is a Windows XP running DHCP. It gets assigned an Internet routeble IP address. At this point, nothing is running a firewall.
Symptoms:
Gateway can ping CentOS bridge
CentOS bridge can ping gateway
CentOS bridge can resolve DNS names and ping FQDNs on the Internet.
CentOS bridge CAN NOT ping Desktop

I have a remote network that I manage consisting of a DLink DFL-210 firewall/router, and behind that a Dell server running openSUSE 11.2 and a collection of Windows XP/Vista/7 computers.
The Linux box is running OpenVPN as a server (that is how I connect to this network) and a client (it connects to a second server - running XP - at a different location).
The DLink router is the DHCP server and provides addresses on the 192.168.51.0/24 network. The OpenVPN server provides the 10.8.51.0/24 address range.
The remote network that the Linux box connects to is 192.168.54.0/24 via the OpenVPN network 10.8.54.0/24.
I have added routes to the DLink router to route all traffic to the 10.8.51.0/24 and 192.168.54.0/24 networks to the Linux box.
With SUSEFirewall turned off, after I have connected via OpenVPN from my remote computer I can ping all active 192.168.51.0/24 addresses. Other computers on the 192.168.51.0/24 network can ping computers on the 192.168.54.0/24 network. But if I turn on SUSEFirewall, neither of these work. However, I can ping 10.8.54.1 from any computer on the 192.168.51.0/24 network.
How can I set up SUSEFirewall to allow these networks to communicate with eachother?

This will be a little long (having read Phil's 'how to ask questions' FAQ). I'm trying to get OpenVPN working between my CentOS server and some Windoze laptops running XP. There seems to be plenty of sample
config files available, but to date, none of them have worked for me. Pulling out my trusty Wireshark, I've found some clues,
BACKGROUND:
My local subnet (NAT'ed by my gateway router) is 192.168.52.x. My router has been configured with a conduit (port-forward) for port 1194 (the standard OpenVPN port), which points towards my CentOS server.The CentOS server is .52.112, and the supplicant is .52.110. I have tried the lient both inside and outside my local subnet, with no difference in events or outcomes.

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains).My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.

Mine is direct cable connection using CAT5 cable terminted to my ethernet card. and I connect to the net using a dial-up connection. I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. I use vpntunnel.se and followed their tutorial for OpenVPN and it connects and assigns an IP. However, once the sequence is initiated and I open my browser I cannot connect to a webpage and get a "cannot resolve" error. I e-mailed their support and they suggested I change the DNS of my network settings. I did that but the same problem. Once I close OpenVPN my internet works again. It works in windows, so I know it is not my router...I use a wireless connection with my router. I don't know if this has something to do with anything...

I want to configure Internet connection in my linux os but don't know how to do it. In Windows XP the method is quite simple but in linux I know know what to do about, It has been very challenging for me to do it but don't knw how ot do it.This file I have to type at run "RASPPPOE.inf" to get list of available Internet providers.
In windows I do it in this way-
1.First go to My network places ->View network connection->Local area network->Properties->Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)->Install->protocol->Microsoft TCP/IP version 6(select)->Have disk->(then browse to get RASPPPOE.inf file from PPPOE folder)->click OK->select PPP over Ethernet protocol->Click OK->>continue anyway(two times if asked)-> Apply->OK.
2.Then got to run ->Type raspppoe (Enter)->one window will open->select the LAN card (where internet cable is connected)->Click on Query available services->Select Internet provider name and->Click on Create dial up connection.-> Then dial up will be created on Desktop where I enter my username and password to start internet.
