General :: Searching Content Of The File Using File Browser Nautilus?

May 27, 2011

I'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive Within The Nautilus Browser?

Jun 8, 2011

I don't know why it's happening or what caused it, but just a few minutes ago it occurred that every time I unmount/power down my external hard drive from within the Nautilus browser, Ubuntu freezes and Caps Lock starts blinking, indicative of a kernel panic. It doesn't do this when I Safely Remove the drive from the right-click menu on the drive's desktop icon. Even stranger is that no other external device I've tried causes the panic. It only does this with this particular external hard drive and it's a repeatable error.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? EDIT: To note, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32.33 kernel. Not Ubuntu 11.04.

Fedora :: Alternative Gnome File Browser?

Dec 27, 2009

I asking for an alternative to nautilus. The problem I have with nautilus is that it take up too much screen real estate, the icons are too big, etc. My screen is 1280 x 1024 and I dont plan on going higher.

Any alternative should have the option of using small, smaller icons and when resized keeps the smaller size the next time the file browser window is opened.

Fedora :: Multiple File Browser Openings

Feb 19, 2010

I have a new installation of F12 on a laptop and there over 500 updates related to bugs, security issues or enhanments available. I installed the security updates first with no issues.Next I installed the updates in the attached file. Afterwards, I restarted and logged in again. Now the File browser continuously opened on the bottom panel of the Gnome desktop and it never stops so there were multiple File Browsers opening. Since I installed them using "yum install $(cat updates1.txt) command, it was easy for me to remove them using "yum remove $(cat updates1.txt) command.

At some point, the file browsers started to close until no more were open. After the yum cammand finished I restarted and now the laptop "hangs" on the splash screen. It appears that I have to rebuild the laptop because it does not boot to the login screen. Moreover, since I have no idea of which update caused this, I wonder if I should installl any of the non security updates.

Fedora :: File Browser Missing From FC 13 System Tools Menu?

Aug 18, 2010

I installed Fedora Core 13 x86-64 from the installation DVD and picked the "Software Development" installation. I notice that the Applications->System Tools menu doesn't have "File Browser" on it.

Nautilus is installed, so I can create a launcher for it. I'm merely curious whether this is a change or bug in FC 13? Or should I suspect that I myself deleted the file browser launcher accidentally? The machine is a laptop and I find the mousepad awkward to use.

Fedora :: Gnome 3 Open File Dialog Not Talking To Browser?

Aug 25, 2011

I suspect this is a Gnome 3 problem and not a Fedora problem, but I have no way to separate the two here. I cannot upload an image from my computer to Weebly or to Google Plus, but strangely enough, I can upload one to Picasa. The sequence of actions goes something like this:

1. Open Weebly editing interface, add a picture element, click on the element to edit/add a picture. It then gives you a choice: from your local computer, from the web, etc.

2. Click on 'from local computer' and my computer opens the Open File Dialog Window.I am guessing that is its name, it is the same window you get when opening a file in any other application, like Gedit or LibreOffice.

3. Navigate to the image I want to upload and double click on it or select 'Open'.

4. Nothing happens.

I am able to upload images from my laptop, running Linux Mint 11 with Gnome 2.

It sounds to me like the Open File Window is not passing on the necessary information to the browser. I have no idea why it works in Picasa and not in Google+ or Weebly.

I don't really expect anyone to have a solution just yet, but I wanted to mention it somewhere, and I didn't see any Gnome.org forums. On the other hand, if someone does have a solution, great.

This is by no means a knock on Gnome 3, it is fine with me and I Iike it a lot more than I thought I would.

Fedora :: Desktop Icons Invisible And File Browser Doesn't Work?

Dec 28, 2009

I installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"

I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.

BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.

I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
