Fedora :: File Browser Missing From FC 13 System Tools Menu?
Aug 18, 2010
I installed Fedora Core 13 x86-64 from the installation DVD and picked the "Software Development" installation. I notice that the Applications->System Tools menu doesn't have "File Browser" on it.
Nautilus is installed, so I can create a launcher for it. I'm merely curious whether this is a change or bug in FC 13? Or should I suspect that I myself deleted the file browser launcher accidentally? The machine is a laptop and I find the mousepad awkward to use.

It used to be that the dvd menu offered an option to "repair the installed system". THis was really very convenient. The openSUSE 11.3 dvd for x86 now only gives a "system rescue" option which leads to command line directl. Where have been "the repair the installed system" tools? How can we access them now? What is a reasonable set of tips that's supposed to be used after logging into "system rescue"?

I am missing the File menu in many programs (Fedora 13). I found a thread that said this fixed itCode:yum remove gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut I did that and (I'm using audacity to test) it said that it was missing gnome-globalmenu. So I did Code:sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut now audacity is again missing the file menus.

In F11 the administration menu had more things in it IIRC. Seems that in F12 a lot of tools are missing.Specifically the SELinux config tool is missing, but getting the rest of the menu back would be nice. I can't remember what it had but I'm sure I'll need them at some point.

I just installed Fedora 13. In the "applications" and "places" menus, there are little icons next to each item. In the "System" menu, however, there are not. I believe there used to be, no? Anyone else notice this?

Well like the title Implies, In my Administration menu in Gnome I don't have a "Printing" option. So I can't search for/install printers right now.I'm running 10.04 Server. I installed the gnome-desktop-environment package to get a GUI up and running for manipulating the filesystem, But not all the menu's I was expecting appeared. Is this because I used the gnome-desktop-environment instead of the ubuntu-desktop-environment package? ecause I have two PC's setup next to each other. One using the ubuntu-desktop-environment, and one using the gnome-desktop-environment package and the two desktops are clearly different. All I want to know is how to add the Printers menu to my PC running the gnome-desktop-environment package. I already looked at gconf-editor and the printing menu isn't hidden or anything, it's just not there. And me being a new user to Linux, I don't know how else to get to those printer abilities without the GUI

I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev
I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...
(I will add idVendor/Product values later)
The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.
Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'

I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on an IBM ThinkCentre. I have earlier had a dual boot Win 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the computer. When I installed Debian Jessie, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and created new partitions from the free space. The install went fine and the Debian EFI/UEFI version of Grub was installed, but clearly at some other place, as when I boot the system, the old Ubuntu Grub pops up and of course cannot find the necessary files that it is looking for.

Only "Favourites", "Run Command" and "Leave" is shown on the classic KDE menu, same thing when switching to Launcher Menu Style. Missing Applications and everything else. File associations is not working. Double clicking any type of file it asks to install the program and the known applications menu is empty.
I tried to add a new user, same problem with that. I also noticed that when running Chrome it asks to be the default web browser each time even when I say yes.
I have not been messing with anything, I suspect it happened during a update, but I got the exact same repositories on 2 other x64 machines where there is no problem.
I'm using KDE 4.6.0 from the factory repository.
I tried to reinstall some KDE4 packages without any luck.
I do not want to reinstall the entire system or downgrade KDE.
Code:

I can start "Search for files" from menu
Applications->Accessories->Search for files....
and it works fine.
However I would like to put it into the context menu of the Nautilus File Browser.
When I select it e.g. for folder /home/peter
then the start base directory should be obviously set AUTOMATICALLY to /home/peter

Up front: the per browser (or per process, if you will) part is the important part here. I'm well aware of the /etc/hosts(and its Windows counterpart), but would like to avoid this system-global method.
What tools exist to override the IP for a given (i.e. configurable) name per browser? For Firefox there are "Modify Headers" and "Tamper Data". Both of them do not appear to be suitable for my case, because the DNS lookup is done before that. So I can only modify the HTTP headers (e.g. the Host header), but not influence the IP to which it gets sent. But manipulating to what IP it gets sent is exactly what I want to do.

Unfortunately far for all unicode characters can be displayed in Fedora by default, (much less than in M$ Wnd). There is a tool that aim to find and install missing fonts when an non-displayable character appears, but it starts mainly when I accidentally open non-text file in terminal and never when a web-page I open in Mozilla Firefox (or Konqueror) contains such kind of characters. So, I see a rectangle with hexadecimal number of character in it (or simply empty rectangle in case of Konqueror) and don't know if there is a easy way to see it by installing missing font automatically (or manually at last) for range of this character or a way to install complete font collection to display all unicode characters from all ranges.

Just upgraded to fc12, noticed that there was no menu bar (the one with "file", "edit", etc....) on my users/groups configuration program, but I figured that it was just a change from fc11. But now I'm noticing more stuff that doesn't have one that ought to (gedit, filezilla, and most importantly, nautilus). On the other hand, firefox does have the menu bar, so it's not a global issue. I have compiz-fusion/emerald, although I'm not sure that would make a difference. I've tried a few different themes thinking it might be the theme I'm using, but no dice.

Have downloaded Fedora 14 (64-bit Gnome) and installed KDE so I'd have the option of both desktops.
However, I'm unable to change from one desktop to another - from what I've read, there's meant to be a drop-down menu at the login page allowing you to select the desktop but I don't have one.
I am a beginner with Fedora (mostly used Ubuntu in the past few years, but figure it's time for a change) so I may be missing something obvious.
Not sure it's relevant in this case but specs: Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI 4850, 4gb ram, 320gb HD.
