General :: Possible To Mount USB External Drive As R/W For Multiple Users
Jan 12, 2010I would like to mount a (permanently) attached external USB drive so that it is writable by multiple userids. Currently HAL is mounting the drive as writable to my owner user and readable for group and others. My m/c also runs as an FTP server and I would like said FTP server to be able to write files to the external drive. Just being able to specify a gid would probably do the job for me.
I have googled HAL and UDEV and also attempted to configure usbmount to do this, all to no avail. I am running SLES 10.3. So in summary, can I & how do I either make HAL mount the drive with gid=nnn, or should I not use HAL and simply make an entry in /etc/fstab and make sure a I get the same device address for this USB drive each time I boot?
CentOS 5 Server :: Multiple Html Folders For Sandbox Server?
Aug 30, 2010I am running Centos 5.5 with Apache 2.2.3, MySql 5, and PHP 5.1.6. I am migrating a Drupal installation to the default html folder for development purposes. I am very new to server management, and a bit lost.I want to install some other web sites on the sandbox server to experiment with before uploading them to a Production environment. Is it possible to have multiple html folders? Or to use symlinks to point to the folders where the other web sites will reside?

Apr 8, 2010I've got an external hard drive with one large data partition on it. I also have four computers to connect it to (individually, not at the same time). Three machines are running Slackware and one is running Ubuntu 9.10. I need to be able to just plug the drive into whichever machine, mount it (preferably to the same location each time) and not have to worry about user permissions and such. Do I just chmod 777 all the files and folders or is there a better method for different 'users' to access the same partition? And how about mounting to the same location each time?
Now the second part of my question I'm pretty sure I'm not able to do but just in case..... is there any way to encrypt the information safely and make it compatible with a Windows XP machine?
General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?
Feb 7, 2011I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:
* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit
I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?
To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.

Jan 14, 2011In Red hat i used the nail command to send mail using an external smtp server without sendmail or other mail services active. My question is: In Centos 5 nail is not present but is present mailx in version 8.1.1-44.2.2
Is there a way to set mailx to use external smtp server ? because in many forum i get the string mailx -S smtp= etc.etc. but in my case the -S parameter generate mailx: invalid option -- S antoher question is there a an official repository to download rpm nail for centos ?
CentOS 5 Server :: Share Location For Multiple Uses?
Sep 3, 2009I use Samba, NFS, RSync and FTP/TFTP in my multi-location setup.
Is there a CentOS standard place to put my sharable file space? I've seen /usr/local/, /var, /var/samba, /user and /share. I have gotten to the point of preferring /share, but I want my servers to adhere to standards in case I am not available. Another alternative is to create a user name that matches the group name and using that user's home directory for the shared file space. This would solve the issue of shared departmental mailboxes and backups, not to mention (though apparently, I'm going to) SELinux configuration... Maybe I've just answered my own question...
What are other people's opinions?
CentOS 5 :: Server Has Crashed On My Multiple Times?

I have 2 terabyte drives mirrored.It automatically reboots and seems to run fine after rebooting.I've attached a copy of the /var/log/message to this post.I was unable to paste file.I'm not if a bad disk is causing the problem or not.

Just for playing with it and learn a little linux.this server has to Network interface cards. one for connecting from extern and one from connecting from the LAN.when i want to connect from lan (eg via SSH) this allways works!when i want to connect not from LAN this only works sometimes! only if i establish at the same time a connection from LAN it wors mostly.with other devices i have no problem (tested another server with just 1 NIC) and this works too.also the problem is not dyndns because i have the same problem when i try to connect through the direct IP.

CentOS 5 Server :: Postfix Multiple Domains One User?
Jun 2, 2010I am currently running a apache/postfix email service on my server. I am using aliases for two addresses for example:
trscookie@serverone.com
trscookie@secondserver.com
so the emails no matter which domain receives the email trscookie always will receive the email.
However I am unable to work out how to 'reverse' this process, for example.
If i was to go to secondserver.com/webmail I would like the emails to get sent from trscookie@secondserver.com however they are currently all coming from serverone.com. Is it possible to configure this so that it is sent from the correct domain?

Nov 4, 2009My ISP blocks outgoing email if it does not login properly with a valid account. I successfully configured sendmail to use SMART_HOST and confAUTH_OPTIONS with confAUTH_MECHANISM set to LOGIN PLAIN.
It successfully sends email because I tested it with evolution sending through 127.0.0.1, but I need to specify myacount@mydomain.com as the email address for root.
But it doesn't work for logwatch because it sends as from root@localhost.localdomain, and my ISP's smtp server rejects it. The message I get back in root@localhost account is the following:

I thought that I should masquerade all emails from this domain, so I configured sendmail as specified in [1] section "24.3.1.4. Masquerading", but it doesn't work. It seems that masquerading in sendmail is broken or something is wrong in the documentation.

Is there a way to specify the "From:myacount@mydomain.com" in logwatch ? or Is there a way to make it work the masquerading in sendmail so I can masquerade everything as coming from a specific account?

Jul 30, 2011I am setting up a CentOS box as a NAT firewall that needs to also send mail. It needs to send this mail using an outside provider's SMTP. The provider requires SMTP over SSL. None of the machines inside the NAT will ever send mail except via the provider's SMTP nor will they ever receive mail except to local clients via the provider's IMAP servers.
So for the example the machine is TESTMACHINE. There is one internet facing ethernet port connected to a DSL modem via pppoe.
The SMTP it needs to send mail via is mail.host.net which requires SMTP over SSL (port 465) and username/password authentication.
The sendmail documentation is quite confusing on how to get this simple setup operating, so an example showing the appropriate changes to sendmail.mc and other require config files.

How do I tell php to send an email with mail() using an external mail server?
The situation: I've got apache/php running a webserver on my local machine. It's for dev purposes only, and the website files I'm using are checked out from our SVN. This lets me make changes to our website while not actually changing our website.
I've come across an issue I'm fixing where I need to verify that an email is successfully getting sent out, and unfortunately, this email is sent out using php's mail(), and not our website's usual $mail object. Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to change how this sends out right now, just when it sends out.
I've been running everything fine on my machine for a month now, and haven't needed the mail stuff until now. How do I tell php to send an email using an external server?
CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple Nics With Multiple Gateway ?
Jun 16, 2009I have a CentOS 5.3 box with three network interfaces in it. Each interface is attached to a separate VLAN and I want traffic to stay on each network segment.What I can�t figure out is why I cannot get each interface to have its own gateway and everything gets sent through the default gateway.The basically takes my possible 3Gb total bandwidth and throws it down a single 1Gb pipe.Then on top of that, if I take down the interface (ifdown) that has the current default gateway,I loose contact to the other two interfaces.When I look at the routes, each one of the interfaces shows the gw as 0.0.0.0 and defers to the default route. So I delete the route and try to add a new route with:
[root@testsan ~]# ip route add 10.1.15.0/24 via 10.1.15.1 dev eth2
but end up with the error:
RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable
[root@testsan sysconfig]# cat network
NETWORKING=yes

General :: CentOS 5.5 - External DVD Drive Does Not Show Up
Dec 5, 2010Installed CentOS 5.5 some time ago and I can proudly say I am more than satisfied with it. Managed to install codecs, flash player, media players, chrome and opera browsers and all other things I need. My only problem is that as of about a week ago my external DVD player is not recognized any more by CentOS so I am unable to watch movies. My external DVD player is Magnavox and it works great but CentOS does not recognize it any more. I used to watch movies in CentOS in SMPlayer all the time. What to do to get it back?

Dec 28, 2010I recently got an external 2TB hard drive. I want to use it with my Mac Mini, which is triple booting Linux, Mac 10.6, and Windows 7. The problem is, I don't know which file system it should be using. NTFS is read/write in Windows and read-only in Mac, and HFS+ is read only in Windows and read/write in Mac. I'm pretty sure FAT is not a good choice for a disk this big. Is there any way to get this to work?

Jun 1, 2009I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:
In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line
Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf
However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied
It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.
Ubuntu :: X Crashes With Multiple Partition External HD
May 16, 2010I'm running 10.04 X86_64. I have this 650 GB External Hard Drive With three partitions: one fat32 and two ext4. Sometimes when I plug the drive in X crashes. I get no response at all from the keyboard but the pointer works. I am able to minimize and maximize windows but i cant close them and i cant click on the top bar. Today the error occurred after I transfered some files from one of the ext4 partitions to a 320 GB External HD(single partition FAT32). I pressed the ctrl + alt+ f1 ( to go to the shell :-/) and this strange lines of code where showing up over and over again:

Also the following exception:

When i came back to X (ctrl + alt + f7) and unmounted the drives every worked fine.

Debian :: Mount Multiple External Hard Drives ?
Dec 20, 2010How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

Jan 22, 2011I am trying to intall multiple distros on an external drive. This drive has no windows installed and I want it solely for Linux use.
When installing the distros from live disks, each time it comes to selecting the partition to install to, I am asked for a mount point. I have used in the first installation but this cannot be used again.
