General :: Possible To Mount USB External Drive As R/W For Multiple Users

I would like to mount a (permanently) attached external USB drive so that it is writable by multiple userids. Currently HAL is mounting the drive as writable to my owner user and readable for group and others. My m/c also runs as an FTP server and I would like said FTP server to be able to write files to the external drive. Just being able to specify a gid would probably do the job for me.
I have googled HAL and UDEV and also attempted to configure usbmount to do this, all to no avail. I am running SLES 10.3. So in summary, can I & how do I either make HAL mount the drive with gid=nnn, or should I not use HAL and simply make an entry in /etc/fstab and make sure a I get the same device address for this USB drive each time I boot?

I have an external USB hard drive at /dev/sdb1 (NTFS)
2 users: johnny, audio
for some reason this drive is mounted at /media/TREKSTOR_ with johnny as the owner. I can't seem to chown the drive to audio. If I unmount the device, and remount it, the owner is set to johnny again. I need to access this drive from the audio account.It's a 1TB drive, so I wouldn't be able to reformat it to EXT3 easily as it's almost 60% full.

How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

I've got an external hard drive with one large data partition on it. I also have four computers to connect it to (individually, not at the same time). Three machines are running Slackware and one is running Ubuntu 9.10. I need to be able to just plug the drive into whichever machine, mount it (preferably to the same location each time) and not have to worry about user permissions and such. Do I just chmod 777 all the files and folders or is there a better method for different 'users' to access the same partition? And how about mounting to the same location each time?
Now the second part of my question I'm pretty sure I'm not able to do but just in case..... is there any way to encrypt the information safely and make it compatible with a Windows XP machine?

I am trying to recover files off a 3.5" IDE Hard Drive that had Windows ME installed on it. I have access to a MacBook, Windows XP Desktop PC, and a cd with Ubuntu 8.10 on it.
Attempts:
1) If I make the HD the only primary master HD it won't boot up.
2) If I make it a slave drive it won't boot up.
3) I purchased an external enclosure from Radio Shack which turned out to be crap and online reports supported this conclusion. I got nowhere with that thing. Bestbuy doesn't sell 3.5" IDE enclosures.
4) By using an IDE / SATA to USB kit, I am able to connect the HD to the PC via USB cable. XP will detect the drive, however the HD will not my displayed under "My Computer" nor "Disk Management".
Onto linux (this is where I grabbed the Ubuntu cd):
5) When connected, the HD will show up under "Computer" as a "USB Drive". When I double click on it I get the error "Unable to mount location Can't mount file".

I;ve been using Ubuntu (10.xx) for a few months now and am really getting the hang of it.My NAS drive has now failed.It is a WD Mybook world edition 1tb with the blue rings.The drive spins fine and in windows I can see the partitions but I understand the file system is linux based.Can anyone help as to how I can mount the drive and recover the files using ubuntu / linux.I have a USB caddy to connect the SATA drive to my laptop.

I finished installing Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) on two desktop PCs formerly running Windows XP. Both installs went like a charm.Machine A has an external USB drive connected to it that I previously used for MS Windows backups. I can see the contents of the external drive from A's "file explorer" and navigate its directories. I would like to have machine B auto-mount A's external USB drive.A while back, I did something similar with a RedHat host that would automount a connection to an external USB drive shared by a MS Windows machine. My "/etc/fstab" was updated to mount a CIFS share.
I used CIFS since RedHat does not support NTFS, which is the format of USB drive. It worked perfectly.Can I do the same thing or is there a simple way? I am thinking that I may need to setup NFS server and client but I am not sure.Is there a how-to on NFS and Ubuntu?

it doesn't give me any response so I presume it succeeded but when I try to touch it, it tells me it's a read-only file system

I upgraded Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 desktop a few weeks ago and an external USB drive that was mounting at startup on 9.04 is no longer mounting on 9.10. If I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in it comes up. The issue is strange in that when a regular non-admin logs in the drive auto mounts but does not for an admin login. I have not been able to put together search results that would lead me to a hint of why this would occur and/or what aresolution may be.Why would the drive auto mount when a regular user logs in but not auto mount for an admin? When I say admin I guess what I mean is a user with more privileges such as member of the admin group.

Manually mount or fix my external hard drive. I can't format the drive because I have important data on it. The drive is 1TB Select USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive from Iomega. When I plug it in, a message appears that reads:
"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb2,missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so".
Also, I plugged in the drive, typed the command "sudo fdisk -l" in the terminal, and received the following:
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

Earlier this year I encountered a problem with my external hard drive; it would not mount automatically and I kept getting an error message. Last time I was able to fix it by typing in the terminal 'sudo fsck /dev/sdb2'. Once again it's not mounting automatically and I'm not even getting the error message. I have installed a cable that connects from the CPU's SATA motherboard connection to a removable drives' ESATA connection.I would like to be able to swap drives on the ESATA connection and have all users be able to read and write to these drives.I have created the directory /archive/ where I would like the drive(s) to mount.The drives are all formatted Fat 32 - but in the future I may use HFS for formatting.When I used the command (as root):mount /dev/sdc1 /archivethe drive was mounted (but read only)What can I use in my /etc/fstab file that will allow drives to be mounted and unmounted by all users on the system? (both reading and writing)Also, will I be able to mount and unmount these drives without shutting down? or will I need to reboot every time I want to change drives?

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

Just got a WD Elements 2TB External Hard Drive for my home computer (Ubuntu Lucid)in which I will load all the media files (pics, music, video), it mounted automatically to my user, no problem, but I have two questions:1.) I can see that it has some stuff on root level, an autorun folder, a System Volume Information folder, and an autorun.inf file. Do I leave them there? Or do I delete them?2.) The marriage saver question. My wife cannot access the drive, even though it does appear as a folder with an "x mark" inside her media folder of the filesystem, but she gets something like she does not have sufficient user privileges or something like that.So how do I make it so that she can also access the drive, or certain folders of the drive, which would be an even better option as the backup stuff would be inaccessible to her

As I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

I am trying to intall multiple distros on an external drive. This drive has no windows installed and I want it solely for Linux use.
When installing the distros from live disks, each time it comes to selecting the partition to install to, I am asked for a mount point. I have used in the first installation but this cannot be used again.

I get this when I try to mount this drive. I was working just fine and then when I tried to mount again to pull some data off It gave me an error. It is an internal hard sata hard drive hook up via usb with a usb to sata converter. Is there some kind of disk check i can do to find errors. There is data on there I would like to keep

I have an external usb connected floppy drive that I cannot mount.#fdisk -1 does not show the drive, in my ignorance I thought that it being a usb it would be recognized the same as flash drives and my external usb ide hdd are recognized.The drive does work, I have tested it in windows computers.Does the floppy need special settings?This may be related or it may be another issue totally:The floppy is recognized in gparted although I cannot format the disc to fat16 or fat 32 as they are greyed out.

I am having problems mounting an iso on my external hard drive. I do not want to move it onto my linux partition because it is 3.6 GB. I have a directory made (/media/iso) that I would like to mount it in, but if that doesn't work then I don't care where it goes. After I mount it I want to be able to run it using Wine, but that will come later. For now I just need to get it mounted. And, of course, I am fairly new to linux/ubuntu.

I've been checking the Forums and I can't find anything similar to my problem yet. I have 2 external drives that my UBUNTU 9.10 doesn't recognize, although I can see them perfectly in Win XP.I was using them in Ubuntu until 2 weeks ago, when this problem started and I can't find a way to see/mount them again. GPARTED doesn't find any of them; and when aply fdisk -l, can't see them either (only my internal HD).

I'm having a problem with my external drive under Ubuntu 9.04. After a reboot Ubuntu seems no longer to mount the the 3 seperate partitions on my external drive. I've added some screenshots of my fstab file which i tried just to let Ubuntu mount my drives, without any results!Can someone help me? If more info is requered, please let me know.

I run 10.04 lucid in a laptop with EXT4 as filesystem, and I tried to mount an external hard drive from a Windows that, obviously, uses FAT32. Its the first time I try to mount a hard drive (external) since the upgrade to 10.04. Do I have to download some packages via synaptic? If not, what do I have to do?
