CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up Multiple Websites/IPs?
Sep 25, 2010
I've currently got a centos server setup in my home. It has 1 website running on it and I am using DynDNS.com's service to access the server. DynDNS works by redirecting a free url to the IP address of your server. I would like to add a second website under a different url. However, I'm not sure how to add a second IP address (which I would then use with DynDNS to create a new url).

I currently have a single mysql instance for a couple of websites. Both websites require that the user provide a username.
The thing I just noticed is that two people might choose the same username for both applications. Both of them would have grants to each others' tables, although neither would ever be able to access them, since they can only access through php scripts.
But, I'm now guessing this is not best practice. What does one do? Run multiple instances of mysql for several websites?

I have managed to configure AWstats to work from one server to access the log files for multiple websites on multiple servers and even managed to write a little front end php site to access all the different conf files. I want to know if there is a way of combing two conf files for the same site but are on two different servers in a loadbalanced situation. so my conf files look something like: [URL].. I have to monitor bandwidth for our websites and its gets tedious switching between the various conf files for the same site and totaling it up so I was hoping I could combine the output of both conf files on screen using some funky command in the awstats.pl script

I currently am running 10.04.1 and have successfully setup my home web server to run a single website. My current settings are:
-I have registered the domain name annarrankings.com through godaddy
-A record is - host = @ and points to = 71.114.220.3
-CName is - host = www and points to = @
-on my server I have the site running in /var/www
I've done some research and found that to run multiple websites I need to setup VirtualHost.
-So I created a folder /var/www/annarrankings.com and moved my site to that folder
-Edited Apache2.conf to add the following line
-I then went to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and copied the default file to a new file called annarrankings.com. Here's the annarrankings.com file after I edited it
-I then created a link in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to the annarrankings.com file in /etc/apache2/sites-available
-Next I editied /etc/hosts
-When i went to enable the site using a2ensite annarrankings.com I got the following
I figured this was ok since I had already created a symbolic link earlier (a result of trying to following multiple tutorials and ..... videos at once) so I reloaded apache2. I created an index.html file in /var/www/ just for testing purposes and when I load www.annarrankings.com I get the file located in /var/www/ instead of the website located in /var/www/annarrankings.com Do I need to change my A record or CName in godaddy or did I just do this completely wrong?

I'm missing a fundamental that I just cant seem to wrap my head around with setting up repositories with RepoSync. I set up a local repository when my system was running version 5.2. Everything ran like a top up until the release of 5.3 Upon release I ran the standard yum on my 5.2 server which upgraded it to 5.3 and thats where my mental block is catching me up.
When I run a reposync It seems that all I'm able to download is the 5.2 packages. I'm trying to figure out how I can manage both a 5.2 repo along side a 5.3 repo with reposync and figure out what needs to be done to properly make reposync pull down the latest updates for the newer version. My original thinking was that once my repo server was upgraded to 5.3 it would start pulling the 5.3 updates but obviously I'm way off base since that is not happening.

i have ip's which are 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2. If i log into 1.1.1.1 the outgoing ip shows up as 1.1.1.1 and if i log into 1.1.1.2 the outgoing ip still shows up as 1.1.1.1. I need to set it so that when i log into a 1.1.1.2 to shows up as 1.1.1.2 as the outgoing. Same for when i log into 1.1.1.1 it shows up as 1.1.1.1 on the outgoing end. I need to know how to set it like this. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. I am using my VPS as an SSH tunneling. I would to have it set up so that if i log into 1 account the ip will be x.xx.xx.1 and if i log into another account it would be x.x.xx.2 ect. I have been searching for hrs on thsi stuff and no luck at all.

I set-up his mail server for him with Postfix but what he wants I have no idea how to do.
Essentially he wants it so that the mail gateway IP corresponds with the dedicated IP of the domain and I have no idea how to accomplish this.
I found some documentation on the web saying that the fix for this was to run multiple instances of Postfix which I tried doing but each time I try to start the second instance I get the error that postfix is already running.
There has to be an elegant way to make this happen, I really hate to tell a client something can't be done even though the concept is a bit pointless, IMHO. I am hoping I can get some feedback here on if this can be done and if it can the easiest way for me to accomplish doing it.
Here is some of the config files (example.com has been put in place of the actual domain names and the ip of 5.5.5.5 is in place of the actual IPs
Code:
[root@youronlinehosting ~]# cat /etc/postfix/transport
example.com smtp:5.5.5.5
example.com smtp:5.5.5.6
example.com smtp:5.5.5.7
[Code].....

I have what will soon become a file server here running Mandriva 2009.1 and I need to set it up for use. There are 6 physical drives, sda-sdf. According to my fstab (pasted below), the OS is installed on sdb.. and for some reason I have a swap partition on sda and sdb. I had a horrible time getting a working installation, and that's probably leftover from a previous attempt.
Question 1: Can I simply edit my fstab to remove the swap on sda, effectively confining all system resources to sdb? The end result I want is all storage space over all drives accessible from a single mount point which can be accessed over the network.
Question 2: Once I sort out the weird fstab, what's the best way to go about setting this up? I imagine I need to format & partition the other drives (all but sdb).. but as far as organizing the free space, what's the best way? Is it possible to have multiple physical drives accessible from a single mount point? Or will the users have to use each drive separately? I was thinking I could create a directory on sdb (in /home?) to use as a root for the network share, and then automount the other 5 physical drives there. Does that make sense?
Code:
/etc/fstab:
# Entry for /dev/sdb1 : UUID=7461ae34-aaa1-443d-82e1-fc9000afcc42 / ext3 relatime 1 1
# Entry for /dev/sdb6 : UUID=41535e04-0368-4682-ab9c-5f791bfea803 /home ext3 relatime 1 2
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sda5 : UUID=9edbc49b-302c-43c8-8264-ed49a7f1fff2 swap swap defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sdb5 : UUID=b7039857-dfae-4a92-8ff4-9d1cdcf25351 swap swap defaults 0 0

A friend of mine is starting a school this school has computers. I'm assuming windows but that's not that point at the moment. He asked me about setting a main unit that held the kids info and their work complete on the computer. Effectivley what I am asking is how do I set up a server to allow many multiple (at least 50 user at a time) each with their own folder as their home (or desktop I guess is a better word). He also wants a person to be able to add themselves as an account similar to that of signing up for something (ie facebook twitter you know). Oh and ( I almost forgot the most important) how to setup the server to allow the other computer to boot to it via the network...

I'm setting up a server on Ubuntu 10.04 for development. It all seems to work nicely, I just have one thing that's bugging me. I have a project in /var/www/portfolio, which is as you may guess my portfolio. Instead of the link http://localhost/portfolio I'd like to use http://portfolio.nl. So I set up a file 'portfolio.nl' under sites-available and a symlink on sites-enabled containing this: To get this to work on my local machine I set up this in /etc/hosts:

I am trying to create multiple FTP sites on one Linux server (using multiple vsftpd-sitename.conf files) with default port '21'.
Below is the sample vsftpd site configuration,
# cat vsftpd-site1.conf
listen=YES
write_enable=YES

I am unable to create above vsftpd site with port '21'. Below is the problem,
# vsftpd vsftpd-site1.conf &

I wonder, i can able to create above FTP site with another port (example, listen_port=60001 ). In Linux(vsftpd), can i use default ftp port '21' for multiple FTP sites?

I need to find a solution where I can monitor multiple sites at once and know when they go down. There are fraudulent sites (not mine I am in the infosec industry)
I have been playing with Nagios and Zabbix all day with not much luck. I have managed to get both installed and running and researched for hours. I just need to figure out how to add domain names to be monitored and I am stuck. I know you have to do it in the conf files but I cannot get a domain to show up?

I have this intra net server project going on and now I moved to 10.04 however there are still some things that I would like to see clarification and instructions on. I am interested to set up multiple parallel websites for my apache server, however I am not sure how to do this exactly. Now I have solid address rivera.wippies.net and port 80 redirecting to my server. What I would like to get done is that I get multiple independent of each other websites for my server I was thinking of making websites like this
/var/www/site1 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net)
/var/www/site2 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net/othersite)
/var/www/site3 (which would be rivera.wippies.net/secondothersite)
etc, so that I have multiple "individual" websties for my server. Requirements would be that each of these websites could have SSL encryption as needed available too, since some of the website could have confidential information.

I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable. Here is my problem. The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that

I am very new to server management, and a bit lost.I want to install some other web sites on the sandbox server to experiment with before uploading them to a Production environment. Is it possible to have multiple html folders? Or to use symlinks to point to the folders where the other web sites will reside?

I've setup a server for a small office (10 people) before with samba domain and file server with slackware. no problem there. now am tasked to setup a samba domain and file server for 300 users in 5 different locations. I am currently given a 1u rack server and I requested for 2x1tb drives that I plan to with RAID.
Some of the offices will be connected via VPN using sonicwall. Would it be ideal for remote users to login to the server in the HQ? Am not so familiar with how other companies setup their servers if they have multiple remote sites. Am also open to setting up servers in each site but because of the currently limited manpower, i'd rather have it close by so I can work on the server remotely if needed.
are there any things that I should consider or are there any good references on setting up a corporate server? the problem now is that the company uses google's email app as their email provider, I have gotten a host to do that already. But since they use email to share files, its not very efficient, hence the file server. But since there are a lot of mobile employees and employees in different sites, I would want them to be able to access those files being shared access the company or departments also.
Then I have to consider how to backup the files and other apps that the company will be using. SInce we will be primarily using linux, we would need to do virtualize some windows based apps that they are using now.

I am still in Linux Diapers. I setup a CENTOS SELINUX box on an internal network. So the only way I know to access it's served pages is by navigating to 10.1.1.40 from a computer within the network. The issue is that I need to create sub-domains for this server but have no Idea how to go about doing that.
Is there a way of creating an alias for the dev server so I can type something like "washington" into the web browser of a computer on the internal network instead of 10.1.1.40? Can I use a fake FQDN that on this server and get served its web pages or do I need to register a FQDN?
Background: I am creating a series of websites using Drupal and am trying to implement the multisites functionality (all the sites are run from a single code base). To do this they suggest setting up each site on a sub-domain during development. We have not yet purchase the FQDN's for the sites so I have no FQDN to setup.

I have successfully setup Apache,MySql,ftp, and a few other various packages. My question today is setting up an email server.I have past experience with sendmail, and procmail. However only on already installed, configured and working servers.I am trying to setup an email server from scratch.I have Centos 5.4 installed.
procmail.x86_64 3.22-17.1.el5.centos installed
sendmail.x86_64 8.13.8-2.el5 installed
Are those two packages the only ones I need to get a working email server setup? Also I have been trying to configure a procmailrc file for my server under /etc/, but I can't seem to find consistent documentation on how to set up a procmailrc file.I believe my iptables is set to block port 110 and 25 from outside connections. how to open those ports too.

We currently run a web server that allows FTP connections. I want to:

2. See if we can create a table of sites that are allowed to connect to the web server using sftp. Or should I just do this at the firewall?

and it did all the installation correctly.
All I need is Setup 389 Server with SSL.I did went through http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Howto:SSL but no Idea how to proceed.I am confused with the following points:
1. Do I also need to run setup-ds-admin.pl and setup-ds-dsgw too?
I tried running setup-ds-admin.pl and it stucked at :
The server 'ldap://389-ds.sap.com:45474/o=NetscapeRoot' is not reachable. Error: unknown error.
2. When Should I run the setupssl2.sh script? After running the above setup-* scripts? What changes I need to make on the script?

I am having problems creating ssl certificates for use with openLDAP. Does anyone know a good centos tutorial as I am having problems finding ones by searching through google and the forums.
To clarify further I have a small network im trying to setup to use ldap for auth due to the size I figured using kerberos for auth would be a bit overkill.....
I have the server up and running fine however at the moment all auth is done by using clear text (which is fine as the network has no connection to the internet at current) however in the future it will so I am trying to use ssl however I am having confusing as which certificates I point to where in the slapd.conf file
