I want to forbid a user to make changes to preferences of iceweasel, specifically to modify proxy settings of the browser. Although user should still be able to use the browser.
I assume these settings are stored in some file on a harddrive? If so, what is this file and can i simply make it read-only for users? Or any other solution?
I learned that, even while on Linux, using Iceweasel/Firefox 3.0.6 is not safe. So I tried to update the browser for my PPC G4 iMac (256 MB RAM, 800 MHz processor).
1. I downloaded a backported Iceweasel .deb from URL...
2. I then tried to install it with dpkg -i PathToIceweasel.deb
3. There was an error. I remember seeing xulrunner-1.9.1 is not installed. I tried to install that with apt-get but it was not available.
4. Now when I click on web browser I get the error "Failed to execute default Web Browser: Input/Output error".
5. What can I do without having to reinstall?
I'm running proxoid (tethering app for android) which operates using a proxy server.
I set the system-wide proxy settings and they seem to work for most part except not on Google Chrome and Opera. Firefox works fine though flash is never detected. I get a 105 "NAME NOT RESOLVED" error on Chrome.
Also whenever I install something using apt-get, it tells me that the packages cannot be authenticated.
There are some sites who are for example U.S.-only...Using Windows and Firefox, it often helped to just install Modify Headers, set it up correctly and you're done (it changes your ip-address you show to a website) Using a proxy really slows your connection down, but the app didn't.Is there an app for Iceweasel pretty the same, or at least one being able to do the same?

I am assuming it is because it may not recognize iceweasel, paypal does recommend firefox and iceweasel is based on firefox... but it may not be the same..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora Core 13 running. I have successfully (I think) installed squid, although I may have it configured incorrectly. I can ssh into the box from work via putty, but I can't use the proxy. I get a message "the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" I can use the proxy from my home network, and have watched the tcpdump for port 3128 while using the proxy. I have turned off iptables completely (I'm not sure yet how to just allow squid)...

I am, however, able to download the video and play it at full volume on vlc player or sytem video player.Why iceweasel is acting this way?

I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev
I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...
(I will add idVendor/Product values later)
The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.
Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'
I use the debian(lenny), I cannot browse web. But I can use a root terminal to run [URL] command. The browser will work well. I can connect to web. It seems to my normal user cannot use the network, but the root can.

I am a college broadcaster developing both websites for the stations I work for. We have recently switched from streaming exclusively in Apple Quicktime .mov (which gave constant headaches for myself and others involved behind-the-scenes) to that of an Icecast MP3 pls stream. The stream works within Rhythmbox v0.12.8, Audacious v2.3 and Totem Movie Player v2.30.2. However, I'm in a bit of a bind in regards to streaming this Icecast pls file within Ice Weasel v3.6.13 using Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.How can I code these sites so that Totem Movie Player plays the stream within the web page? When I make it viseable again it unlocks the computer.However I think the time and distance settings should be changed. I think it takes about 30 seconds between scans before it finds the device and unlocks or unlocks the computer. I can also stand a good 10 meters away and it won't lock the computer; even between rooms sometimes.I'd like to change it so it scans faster and it'll lock if I'm more than one meter away. I know the bluetooth ranges are from 1, 10, and 100 meters; varying on the device class.

I found it had running ALSA, OSS and PulseAudio and ended up purging everything in the system except for ALSA. Pulse Audio, for some reason, would shut down the sound-card when I muted sound though keyboard shortcut; after that, I had to manually open the sound table and enable a master control that would always remained closed.
Now, after purging the system of the excess baggage, ALSA will not retain the settings of the user; system will always reboot with PCM sound control fully closed.
Every time i click 'System Settings', it says that it is Starting, but nothing else happens after that. I can access 'Advanced Settings', but not 'System settings'. A

I use xterm with a particular font size and type. But every time I start xterm I have to give them in arguments

Every user should be able to set it for himself. I have searched all the hidden folders and rc files in my home folder, but didn't find anyone related to xterm. What should I do? When I first installed Karmic, I created a dummy Ubuntu1 account to play around with and have long since forgotten everything about it. Now I am attempting to setup a real account and I cannot find a way to modify the account settings for the client software. Is there a way or do I have to purge it?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop and installed the AMD restricted drivers (Radeon HD 5770). I installed compizconfig-settings-manager and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra. All of the plugins have worked fine so far. However, while "Cube Reflection and Deformation" works, I cannot change the settings. Specifically, I tried changing the cube caps from the visually irritating logos to which it defaults to plain white, but the logos stayed. I also tried removing the annoying "Reflection" option, but to no avail.
I soon discovered that none of my settings would apply to the plugin, although they would display as though they were applied in the settings manager. Changing the settings in other plugins, like "Desktop Cube," works fine. So far, I am sticking just with the "Desktop Cube," "Rotate Cube," and "3D Windows" plugins, but I would really like that cylinder. And I have used Compiz, including the deformation plugin, for years with no difficulty.
I was just wondering if there are any applications that would serve as a webcam manager in Ubuntu. I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell XPS M1530. Under Windows, I was able to modify camera settings (resolution, image, special effects) from a dedicated panel any time the camera was on. I don't need a lot of flashy features, but it would be nice if I could lower the resolution so that Skype runs more smoothly.
