General :: Modify Web Browser Appearance / Text Size (Firefox With Fedora 14)?
Jun 4, 2011Struggling to find right place to post, or for FAQs, or anything, because reading web browser is such a strain: can use Firefox v. happily in MS Windows, but, new to Linux and Fedora (14), I can't physically SEE where to start modifying appearance of either desktop or browser, which seem minute. I'm sure there's a really simple route if someone can just start me off.

Apr 18, 2016I can't find the reason cups pdf driver do this. I created my default printer as is told:
CUPS PDF--> Generic Printer--> Generic CUPS-PDF Printer
The pdf created shows well, but when i drag to select and copy text, it copies some strange characters as following:

Jun 11, 2011Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.

Feb 3, 2010I've recently installed the program Sparky for processing NMR data. When I start the program the text is unreadable. For example the top left pull-down should be labeled 'File' and instead I only see the two horizontal dashes in the 'F' and the right 2/3 of the 'e'. Yet the banners above the windows are completely normal. I have occasionally had similar problems with Matlab, but it's intermitant and less severe

Jul 19, 2010I want to copy part of a file I'm writing in emacs into, say a blog post or something like that. Putting the text into the kill ring doesn't allow me to paste it into another program. As it stands, I have to open the same file in gedit and copy/paste from there. Is there an easier way?
[Weirdly, it works fine the other way round: copying text off a SU answer, for example, I can paste that into emacs with C-y just fine...]

Mar 29, 2010I am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.
Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.
Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.

Apr 29, 2010I've installed Lucid, and so far the only problem I'm having repeatedly is that my appearance settings aren't saving. Every time I reboot I have to change the visual effects from "none" to "normal", whereupon it searches for drivers and changes the settings. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

How can I make it stay on None?Edit: I just created another user on this pc. After reboot it stays on None for this user, suggesting it's a per-user setting I need to fix, not a system wide one.

Feb 16, 2010Peering into gconf-editor, I noticed that under desktop>gnome>background the picture_filename is the original warty that comes pre-installed on karmic. However, I am not using that BG, instead one that i told the Appearance Preference manager to find and use. Does this app use a symbolic link to refer to the image, or is it elsewhere? Lookin in /usr/share/backgrounds my image does not exist. So what is drawing the BG? Is it nautilus or compiz?

If I go into the screen resolution, I have no choices higher than 800x600. If I restart the system, there is a good chance that the screen resolution will go back to normal. what I can do to fix it?

May 19, 2010I installed a theme called 'elementary' and it said I also needed an iconset for it too.so I tried applying that too.but that just said cant move directory over directory. I searched around and found a "solution" that made things worse.Before I applied the "solution" I had the theme working without the icons set.., the so called solution told me to go to my home and press control+h then go to the .themes directory and delete the theme folder and that's what I did... after that everything stopped working.
I got the iconset working but the theme itself is not showing up on the appearence preferences, the current theme is my previous one.. and when I go to customise theme, then window boder tab.. I see the elementary theme there with a question mark on top of the faded thumbnail,I can't seem to delete it too..
edit: when I select the theme custom it says this theme will not work as intended because the required window manager theme 'elementary' is not installed.
Ubuntu :: Appearance Settings Buggy On Boot?
May 25, 2010Here is a description of my problem:I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop with the default Ambiance theme. I have my bottom panel deleted and instead use Docky.Sometimes on boot/reboot one of a few things happens.Either:1)My Ambiance theme loads, then...unloads?My top panel and all Nautilus windows turn to a flat gray "theme" as if I guess there are no appearance settings enabled. If I open appearance settings my panel returns to theme without doing anything else, but my Nautilus windows are still out of theme.2)My Docky bar never loads up and I have to start it manually, it then loads/works fine as if nothing is wrong.3)Both problems 1 & 2 combined.
My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 64bit running on an Athlon x2 3.0GHz with 8gig of DDR2 dual channel RAM and a Geforce 9800GTX+ video card. I had the latest factory NVidia driver installed and figured that might be causing the problem. I switched an older release of the NVidia driver last night to see if that fixes anything, but being an intermittent problem only a few days use will tell. I would not use the NVidia drivers at all, but I figured I would not be able to use Docky as it requires compositing to be enabled (which I was under the assumption were under the special effects that I need the NVidia driver for).
