Failed to fetch [URL] Could not connect to 127.0.0.1:8118 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111 Connection refused)----when tor and polipo are not running---
Possible causes:
I just installed tor, privoxy, and polipo and set them up for web browsing anonymity. Other than that I don't recall making any system wide changes.
Other Info:
I can access the internet via a web browser and other programs just fine because i can manually edit each program's internet connection settings. apt-get works when tor and polipo are running. I have used tor and privoxy/polipo in the past and this has never been a problem, so I must have done something different this go around. Obviously I am not sure what that is. Attached are the applicable config files.
everything works good in windows environment. still in ubuntu 9.1 which i am using , cannot access internet using connection manager

What could be the problem?
After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04, I'm not able to make any connection to the internet with either my netbook through WiFi or my computer on wired LAN. I can, however, ping my Solaris machines and Macbook. How do I fix this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a newbie friendly guide on tuning stuff like TCP and whatnot. I installed a program on my sister's Windows computer called Internet Cyclone and it did all the settings itself, but I can't seem to find such a program for Linux. I kinda want to learn to do it myself too, so can you point me to a newbie friendly guide on how to optimize my Internet connection settings?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast week I attempted to get "up to speed" with my Comcast cable connection... Ubuntu 9.10, Dell Vostro 400 desktop, Firefox 3.6.13... Comcast says I should have 12 Mbps connection... if I get 1.0 Mbps, I'm doing good... they just tested everything, and said everything is fine on their end. They use [URL] and connects to a server in Chicago, 60 miles away. That gets fantastic speeds, and it's a durn shame the internet doesn't store all its files there!! I use [URL] for my tests, and it uses a server in Dallas TX.
I go to my girlfriends house, and her AT&T DSL line has d/l speeds of 4.5 Mbps or better!!! She's running XP Pro on a Dell machine. So, started digging on the web and thru the forums, and found this:
[URL]
But, like ALL too many things, it's dated... it's from 2008... I've set my settings to what is there, and disabled ipv6 in Firefox. Hey, now, I'm sometimes up to 1.4 Mbps!! Also found this, but no date...
[URL]
Reading forums, I see that folks have said there is a network connection problem with 9.10... and then I see that others are saying the same thing about 10.04 and 10.10!! I have 10.10 on my laptop and had to fight to get its Atheos card to be recognized. Running some tests [URL] gives me weird results: Download 2.64 Mbps, Upload 4.12 Mbps. NOT what it should be. Similar results from testmy.net.
Dunno exactly what info is needed... Speedguide.net gives me results below, but I've tried changing numbers (says my RWIN is low) and nothing changes:
--------------------------------
TCP options string = 020405b40402080adf1dca100000000001030306
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
[code]....
So, today, find, once again, that I'm d'ling in the range of 90/KB/s (719 Kbps)... disgustingly slow. I go on my HP laptop and run the test, and it says 1.6 Mbps. So, desktop directly connected to router is not even 1 Mbps, and wireless connection is faster? Neither of which is close to what I should be getting...
I have a computer with two hard drives that plugs directly into the modem. When I run on my Windows XP drive I can get internet. On my fedora drive I can not even get a ping. If I type ping google.com I get ping: unknown host google.com If I type ping 173.194.37.104 I get connect: Network is unreachable

View 2 Replies View RelatedAt home I'm currently running Hardy on a desktop machine and Jaunty (Eeebuntu) on an EeePC. I often connect the desktop to the internet via a cellphone as modem. I also often connect the EeePC to the desktop via crossover cable and SSH into the desktop so I cam watch video files from the desktop on the EeePC from the sofa or bed.
I'd like to be able to use the desktop's internet connection from the EeePC. This means I have to set up the desktop so the EeePC can share its connection - this involves setting up the desktop as a gateway I believe?
Looking around for info on how to do this, I found this guide [URL]...in-ubuntu.html - but unfortunately it seems this guide has not been written correctly. It repeats itself in one section (below: repeated section in bold):

I'm a newbie and try to switch from Win7 to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity desktop.
My internet connection is slower than hell, and I dont know how to fix it. I tried with disable Ipv6 but it doesnt make any difference. Not sure if its disabled proper because if i do code...
I did a bit of searching, but I guess I'm not sure of the terminology associated with what I'm trying to do.
I'm currently connected via ethernet port (NOT wireless) to my DSL modem.
Every so often my connection gets 'saturated', typically after or during a lot of bittorrent activity that maxes out my bandwith, and my speeds drop markedly, even if the bandwith isn't currently being maxed out. I'm not sure whether it's my ISP throttling my connection or something else, but as a work around, I typically just disconnect my modem from the outlet and then replug to restore normal speeds.
Is there a way to 'restart' my modem from the command line in a similar way without having to physically turn off my modem to get the desired effect?
Well I'm not very sure how to make an Internet radio on Linux.Well basically I googled it.and I did not get quite convincing enough results so.What is the best way to make a Internet radio on linux?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and Debian. I have Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, which is 5 years old now. I have RealTek RTL8139 family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. Currently I have a broadband connection at home. I have dual boot Windows XP Professional and Debian (which I installed a week ago through CD). I have done some preliminary tests for the network and I am posting the screenshots for the tests (e.g. lspci, ifconfig, etc.). I also did two more commands. For 'cat /etc/network/ifstate' the output was 'No such file or directory'. Same output was for the command 'cat /etc/network/options'.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

View 3 Replies View RelatedLinux printing appeared to be working fine up until yesterday. Today typing lpq gives the following: lpq Printer 'sdst@other.domain' - cannot open connection - Connection timed out Make sure LPD server is running on the server
The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?
# dit: sdst@other.domain was mentioned in /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf I'm not sure why lpd.conf is being used instead of /etc/cups/printers.conf
Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,

Restart your PC / lappy

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.
