I'm looking for a newbie friendly guide on tuning stuff like TCP and whatnot. I installed a program on my sister's Windows computer called Internet Cyclone and it did all the settings itself, but I can't seem to find such a program for Linux. I kinda want to learn to do it myself too, so can you point me to a newbie friendly guide on how to optimize my Internet connection settings?

Possible causes:
I just installed tor, privoxy, and polipo and set them up for web browsing anonymity. Other than that I don't recall making any system wide changes.
Other Info:
I can access the internet via a web browser and other programs just fine because i can manually edit each program's internet connection settings. apt-get works when tor and polipo are running. I have used tor and privoxy/polipo in the past and this has never been a problem, so I must have done something different this go around. Obviously I am not sure what that is. Attached are the applicable config files.
Last week I attempted to get "up to speed" with my Comcast cable connection... Ubuntu 9.10, Dell Vostro 400 desktop, Firefox 3.6.13... Comcast says I should have 12 Mbps connection... if I get 1.0 Mbps, I'm doing good... they just tested everything, and said everything is fine on their end. They use [URL] and connects to a server in Chicago, 60 miles away. That gets fantastic speeds, and it's a durn shame the internet doesn't store all its files there!! I go to my girlfriends house, and her AT&T DSL line has d/l speeds of 4.5 Mbps or better!!! She's running XP Pro on a Dell machine. So, started digging on the web and thru the forums, and found this:

Reading forums, I see that folks have said there is a network connection problem with 9.10... and then I see that others are saying the same thing about 10.04 and 10.10!! I have 10.10 on my laptop and had to fight to get its Atheos card to be recognized. Running some tests [URL] gives me weird results: Download 2.64 Mbps, Upload 4.12 Mbps. NOT what it should be. Similar results from testmy.net.
Dunno exactly what info is needed... Speedguide.net gives me results below, but I've tried changing numbers (says my RWIN is low) and nothing changes:

So, today, find, once again, that I'm d'ling in the range of 90/KB/s (719 Kbps)... disgustingly slow. I go on my HP laptop and run the test, and it says 1.6 Mbps. So, desktop directly connected to router is not even 1 Mbps, and wireless connection is faster? Neither of which is close to what I should be getting...

I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

To attempt to get Subsonic working, I changed the port forwarding settings (Belkin calls it Virtual Servers) to forward port 4040 to my desktop computer. I then saved changes, and my wireless disconnected. I waited about 3 minutes, and nothing was happening, so I restarted my router. This left me in the position that I am in now. Even when the router and modem are fully booted, the router does not broadcast my SSID. In addition, a wired connection will not connect to the network through the router. This leaves me completely unable to use wireless, and unable to change any settings in the router.

I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.
I have 2 10.04 computers and one win 7 and one vista computer: The win computers can see each other and the ubuntu computers, but the ubuntu computers cannot see each other or the win machines. The ubuntu computers connect to the internet fine and can ping each other. I cannot find settings to correct.

Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOS is Ubuntu 10.04. I have HomePNA-connection which is converted to Ethernet by Netsys NH-300 HomePNA-Ethernet adapter.
The problems that I have: Sometimes when I boot I don't get IP from DHCP. If try to ping any address I am told that host is unreachable. Sometimes this I can get IP by using command dhlient -r and dhclient to request new ip. Sometimes only way to get my connection to work is booting the computer.
Sometimes the connection works fine from the start but disconnects later for short time. Sometimes this happens every ten minutes, sometimes less often. If I wait for a while the connection might start working again, if not dhclient -r or reboot helps usually. But not always.
I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the default setup (Gnome I think) and on my Gateway Notebook using a wireless connection. It appears to be working great and I can even see my Windows drives and network storage on my home office systems.I have also set it up to run my favorite Bible software on Windows running under VirtualBox. I then installed the KDE Desktop so that I can select either desktop when logging on.
However, once I am in the KDE desktop, I cannot connect to the internet. I have checked and double-checked and the wireless settings seem to be the same on both the Gnom and KDE Desktops but still no network or internet connection when using KDE. I have an EMachine T3095 with xp home os and ubuntu os. I install ubuntu in windows. In windows I don't load internet software, yet surfing the web fine in both os. Recently did complete re-installation of windows and ubuntu os, for got 3 trojan viruses on windows. Now can't get on the internet in windows. Emachine said I need to get motherboard downloaded to get LAN, which is not on windows software. Isn't the same motherboard used by ubuntu to get on the internet? Obviously some software has been corrupted? Which software could be the problem. Is there a link to download it?
