I am using alien to convert an rpm package to a debian package. I need the deb package to check for installed package dependencies and notify the user if the dependent software is not found. In the rpm .spec file there is a section that you can use to specify dependencies such as:
%Requires: java
This dependency is flagged when I install with rpm, but my deb file created by alien doesn't indicate there is a failure.

We bought a board with vortex 86x processor. we tried to install RHEL6 beta version. when we select the installation choice we were getting below error: "This kernel requires an i586 cpu, but only detected an i486 cpu. Unable to boot please use a kernel appropritate for your cpu."
We have contacted the board personal. he said(in his words)"If you need to use redhat, you have to use the config & patch file provided in the development note to develop a kernel which is suitable for redhat."

I just installed the new 2.6.27.5-37.fc9.x86_64 kernel from the updates-newkey repository, and I've discovered that the new kernel boots much slower than the 2.6.26 kernel and requires manual intervention to complete the boot sequence on my laptop.
Details:
1) My laptop is a HP dv9708us with 17" AMD Turion dual core 64bit system, 3Gb memory, two SATA drives. One drive (a Fujitsu 160Gb) was installed by HP, and I added a second (a Hitachi 320Gb) drive in the empty secondary drive bay.
2) I have Fedora installed on the secondary drive, but I boot from GRUB using the Kubuntu /boot directory on the first drive. I do that because GRUB cannot properly access the secondary drive. (GRUB reports (hd1) as avilable, but can't "see" any partitions on it.)
3) When the 2.6.26 kernel is booted, the ATA driver produces several messages about the secondary drive being "frozen" untill it reduces the access speed from 3Gb/sec to 1.5Gb/sec. Thereafter it works normally. (I asked in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...to-fix-678903/ how to fix this, but received no replies.)
4) When I boot the new 2.6.27 kernel, the boot hangs for a minute or so for each attached USB device and then appears to hang completely while trying to access the secondary ATA drive. The manual intervention that resolves the problem is to repeatedly push the "control" key, which will cause the ATA error messages, seen with the older kernel, to be displayed and the boot to finish.
5) Even with the manual intervention, the boot process requires about five minutes to complete. This is considerably slower then the boot time required by the 2.6.26 kernel on the same hardware.
6) Without the manual intervention the boot process had not completed during the time it took me to shower, shave, and get dressed this morning - about 45 minutes.

I am running Lucid Lynx kernel 2.6.32.24. Soon after the latest kernel update I noticed that Virtualbox would not launch when I clicked on the icon. I have searched the Internet for days, tried numerous possible fixes, over hours of effort, but can't get it working at all. Ubuntu Lucid runs great!! There are no errors just a few blinks of the hard drive indicator and nothing. Is there anyone out there that has seen this same issue?

I learned yesterday that doing a massive upgrade on my system while moving was a BAAAD idea. The upgrade process was going along just fine, it was all downloaded and was actually installing that last time I saw it. I unplugged my laptop to move a bookcase out, and completely forgot to plug it back in. After I got back from moving a load, I found my computer was off. I tried to boot up, and I got an error that kind of freaked me out. It reads as follows:
Code:kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I'm able to get to grub just fine, and my windows partition loads up just fine, but any of the linux kernels fail similarly when I attempt to load them.I'm sure that I can fix this, I just have no idea how. Probably has something to do with a live cd.

after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

I have a small AMD Geode LX 800 (500 MHz) based Nettop that I would like to use at home as home server managing printers, a central data storage, and some other things. Only I can't install CentOS 5.5 due to an Anaconda exception at the very end of the initial setup process, right before it's supposed to start copying the files. Is it true that CentOS/RHEL requires an i686 compatible processor? As far as I know the Geode LX is only i586 and Redhat's system requirements only list x86 as necessary.

I am running ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with Centos Directory Server centralizedauthentication tool. I can log in just fine with my ubuntu client, however when go to my Directory Server and tell it to require a password change on reset for any of my users, the ubuntu client doesn't require the user to reset their password. the reason I need this to work is so I can reset a users password from the Directory server and then have it use what I set it to for their next login attempt but then require them to set their own password. After days of searching I have only found out that it can be done by setting the option in Directory Server but Ubuntu 10.04 seems to just ignore the option. I am using the libnss-ldapd and libpam-ldapd packages on the Ubuntu client because the libnss-ldap and libpam-ldap didn't work at all, what am I missing?

This occurs ocassionally So i cannot even use the system. The default kernel is panicking and also the new kernel that i installed after the update. now the problem still exists and it is rendering my system unusable. i have put it in ubuntu forums. may be lucid is not supporting older hardware. mine is Athlon xp 1.8ghz ASUS a8NE mb 2GB raM. 82 GB HDD. earlier versions of ubuntu 9.04 was stable and i had the kernel panicking problem in it after i updated the kernel. As the problem remains a problem. I am not at all satisfied with lucid lynx it is unstable. cannot install updates in the update manager. Firefox vanishes while browsing the web. Then i have to restart it. shall i quit ubuntu or go for other Linux distros.

The upstream provider is supplying samba3x (currently samba 3.3.8) packages in their supplementary repository. I know that most of what is in the supplementary repository is burdened with restrictive or non-free licenses, however, Samba is not.
The samba3x packages are critical for Windows Server 2008 trust relationships as well as Windows 7 client support for a CentOS server acting as a Windows domain controller. I know that I can either roll my own packages or compile from source, but an officially supported version would be a much better option on a production server. Is there any way CentOS can "officially" supply these packages and their associated dependencies?
