I want to run system tap with user profiling which requires utrace and uprobes support from the kernel. Are there any SUSE kernels which support this either for SLES or open suse?
View 2 RepliesI would like to profile Xorg and find out where it slows down during some particular usage.The only method that came to my mind was to starts sysprof, but that will only show that Xorg spends 85% of its time calling the kernel. Now, what I would want to know is the kernel function called and hopefully the function (or even a call stack) in Xorg which makes kernel calls.The other method I would know is callgrind, but I really don't know how to set up Xorg+KMD to start in valgrind.The problem I'm investigating is an Xorg slowdown after switching virtual terminals, bug #589348.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIm running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything.Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.
I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.
I want to add Sandy bridge support to linux 2.6.32.20.I have linux kernel 2.6.32.20 ,and Sandy bridge changes were added from kernel 2.6.33.4.Please can anyone suggest how to backport the kernel support for Sandy bridge.

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is just to report that I've got 3D support successfully enabled on my Mobility Radeon HD3200 chip with the open source driver on openSUSE 11.2. I did this to replace the proprietary fglrx driver that has already been installed for quite some time on my system.
Uninstalled fglrx, and here we go... Basically what I did was to get the latest X.Org server (1.8) and Mesa from Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.2 I changed all the corresponding system packages to the versions in that repository. I noticed that I cannot get any 3D support when pairing the last X server with the updated openSUSE 11.2 kernel (2.6.31.12_0.2). With RadeonHD driver it gives me no acceleration at all (No DRI), perhaps it is still intentionally disabled to prevent lockups in r600 cards. With Radeon KDE wouldn't start.
So to get usable driver support I have to update the stock kernel to the one in Index of /repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2 I installed the 2.6.34-rc5-22 kernel and reboot. Immediately I notice that KMS is working, but I could not get DRI to work, presumably caused by the drm being unable to locate two related firmware files (it is there in the kernel, just doesn't know why it is not being loaded). Other than that I do not know why I can't get any acceleration with KMS on. To workaround I passed the 'nomodeset' parameter to the kernel to run in UMS mode instead, and voila! with UMS 2D + 3D accelerations are working. I can enable kwin effects just fine.
Since this is a laptop I need suspend & resume and power management working. Good news is s2ram works perfectly with extra parameter. And all the new Radeon power management options: DynamicPM, ClockGating and ForceLowPowerMode can be enabled just fine! (For UMS you need to generate a xorg.conf and put those options in)Performance is good. So far it's faster than fglrx in some areas and slower in some other area. Now this is truly amazing!
telling me if this behavior of my openSuSE 11.2 installation is normal? I use a 64-Bit openSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.x with root partition ext4. After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a CentOS dedicated server running ProFTP. I have created user accounts which are meant for FTP access only but the users cannot connect to the FTP unless their shell access is /bin/bash
Here is an example line that is outputted when I use this command:
This user can access the FTP fine, but he can also access SSH which I don't want to allow him to do. If I set his shell access to /bin/false then he can't connect to the FTP.
What can I use in instead of /bin/bash to allow FTP but don't allow SSH?
I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.
How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

We bought a board with vortex 86x processor. we tried to install RHEL6 beta version. when we select the installation choice we were getting below error: "This kernel requires an i586 cpu, but only detected an i486 cpu. Unable to boot please use a kernel appropritate for your cpu."
We have contacted the board personal. he said(in his words)"If you need to use redhat, you have to use the config & patch file provided in the development note to develop a kernel which is suitable for redhat."
When i try to run the rpm for lynx (lynx-2.8.5-23.i386.rpm) It comes up with :

When booting from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, it asks for user name and password to install. I downloaded the iso twice and did a checksum. Do I need a user name and password before installing? What is the user name and password? I read the documentation and cannot find any entry about user name and password needed when booting fron CD.

I just installed the new 2.6.27.5-37.fc9.x86_64 kernel from the updates-newkey repository, and I've discovered that the new kernel boots much slower than the 2.6.26 kernel and requires manual intervention to complete the boot sequence on my laptop.
Details:
1) My laptop is a HP dv9708us with 17" AMD Turion dual core 64bit system, 3Gb memory, two SATA drives. One drive (a Fujitsu 160Gb) was installed by HP, and I added a second (a Hitachi 320Gb) drive in the empty secondary drive bay.
2) I have Fedora installed on the secondary drive, but I boot from GRUB using the Kubuntu /boot directory on the first drive. I do that because GRUB cannot properly access the secondary drive. (GRUB reports (hd1) as avilable, but can't "see" any partitions on it.)
3) When the 2.6.26 kernel is booted, the ATA driver produces several messages about the secondary drive being "frozen" untill it reduces the access speed from 3Gb/sec to 1.5Gb/sec. Thereafter it works normally. (I asked in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...to-fix-678903/ how to fix this, but received no replies.)
4) When I boot the new 2.6.27 kernel, the boot hangs for a minute or so for each attached USB device and then appears to hang completely while trying to access the secondary ATA drive. The manual intervention that resolves the problem is to repeatedly push the "control" key, which will cause the ATA error messages, seen with the older kernel, to be displayed and the boot to finish.
5) Even with the manual intervention, the boot process requires about five minutes to complete. This is considerably slower then the boot time required by the 2.6.26 kernel on the same hardware.
6) Without the manual intervention the boot process had not completed during the time it took me to shower, shave, and get dressed this morning - about 45 minutes.
I have GParted installed, running openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. When running GParted, it always grayed out most file system actions, supporting only hfs fully. This made no sense, as I had all the required packages installed for other file system support. However, I recently figured out how to get it to work. Using the installed menu button doesn't work, running "gnomesu /usr/sbin/gparted" doesn't work; to get it to work, I have to open up a terminal, type "su -" to log in as root, and then run gparted. The menu button and gnomesu both prompt for a password, so it should be running as root, but launching it through the root terminal is the only way to actually get it to work. Is one root different from another?

I used Ubuntu 9.x, and it was fine, there were no performance issues. But with Ubuntu 10.10 most applications are very slow (nautilus, OpenOffice, Eclipse ...). I have GNOME and no visual effects (hardware driver for graphics card). It is almost impossible to work with this system.Can I use a profiling tool for analysis? What tool do you recommend?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a home server running Debian Wheezy ( 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.68-1+deb7u6 x86_64 GNU/Linux). I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B NIC and an Intel 82574L. I saw while searching Google that both cards have this issue. I'm currently using the Realtek card for LAN connectivity. If I try to tranfer large files via SAMBA or have any kind of load on the NIC, my system freezes and requires a reboot in order to restore connectivity. The error message from kern.log is:

Everything runs fine until I try to do a large file tranfer or have multiple users connected.

I have OpenSuSe 11.2 64-bit installed on my HP Compaq 6730s laptop. When I'm trying to switch user black screen appears and my system does not react on any key combinations (ctrl+alt+del; ctrl+alt+F7 ...). This was not reproduced before ATI driver installation.

I have a problem with GUI under SuSE. As root I can enter but as normal user I can't. So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. Sometime the system informs me about a error (a temporary file from /tmp(.X0~ )I must remove, I did but next time it tells me that it can't load one module (it gives me a number).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!
The following describes my system:
I installed Fedora 13 on a separate partition and it deleted all of my openSUSE entries in grub. Or the boot menu, whichever is correct. From another thread, I found these commands and tried it:

quit
reboot
hd0,3 contained one of my openSUSE installs. Everything went well and grub accepted all of these commands except quit. So I used esc and rebooted. The reboot brought up the grub shell again. I could find no way to boot anything. Then I used the 'repair installation' option from the 11.2 dvd and installed a new boot loader for /dev/sda2 which contains 11.2.
This was successful, so I went to the YaST bootloader tool and added /dev/sda3 (Milestone 5) and /dev/sda4 (Fedora) and rebooted. But these two partitions still boot into grub instead of loading the correct kernel.
