Nov 23, 2010I installed fedora core 10 on my pc & now i have been trying to install samba. I dont have a network so i mount and use my dvd for installation. I lack exotic package management tools like apt or yum yet the system-config-packages tool does not make sense either. so am stuck with the rpm -ivh [package] command.
The issue however is that this command returns querries about missing dependencies when I attempt to install. So is there a way (switch) i can add to tell the rpm command to automatically check and solve these dependecies using the Packages folder on my mounted dvd? - because i believe all these dependencies are on the dvd.

Feb 4, 2010So I am trying to do a Ruby on Rails install on a Debian OS. It is proving most difficult. There isn't much help from Google since RubyGems is supposed to resolve dependencies for you, so you can just type "gem install rails" and it will install everything you need. But as it turns out, RubyGems doesn't want do. It keeps getting stuck on either the "rack" or "rake" dependencies saying it needs to either be installed or updated when it is there and has a new enough of a version. I even tried this as root and it didn't work.

Jun 11, 2009I am trying to install fc11 on an intel mb with pentium4 and ati graphics
the install always hangs at the point where the sw packages have been selected
and the install is checking dependencies.
I have tried the regular install
the basic video install, and text install
with the same symptoms each time
the dvd drive lite is on and the hard disk activity lite is on and the system is frozen.
have to power off.
I have fc11 installed on another system (amd) and had install issues also but that was
with the preview.
CentOS 5 :: VHOSTS Not Resolving To The Correct Folder Location
Mar 30, 2009having a bit of trouble getting domains to resolve to their own folder properly on my new server.
this is a plesk/centos server that is pretty much out of the box.
Problem I have is that all the domain names I add to Plesk, are all pulling files from /var/www/html . All 5 domains Ive added each got their own /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/* folders created ...
Is there something I am missing in order to have the server grab files from each domains respective folder?
What I noticed was that if I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and add the virtualhost lines to it, then the one domain name resolves properly.
i replaced my domain with 'mydomain.com'
<VirtualHost *>
ServerAdmin youremail@yoursite.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs/
ServerAlias mydomain.com *.mydomain.com

Jun 15, 2011I'm new to ubuntu I last used it 2 years ago and did not like it one bit but a friend told me about 11.04 so thought id give it a go and I absolutely love it. its far superior to windows 7 imo. now my only problem so far is when installing updates it seems to hang on applying . but im sure there should be some indication of progress.

Jan 29, 2010A first for me with Ubuntu. The system has hung. Well almost hung.
After installing the latest automatic updates - I'm sorry, I don't know how to identify which ones they were, but it was on 29 January 2010 - when selecting almost any application the system almost hangs. By almost hangs, I mean, the cursor will move very slightly once every 10 seconds or so, but even if it can be manipulated to a certain point, no action can be taken.
The only way out of this situation that I have been able to find is a hard reboot. (I was used to this type of thing with Windows XP, but had never seen it before with Ubuntu).
Reverting to Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-17-genereic-PAE at the GRUB boot up option screen solves the problem.
Any suggestions on what might be happening, how to fix it, or if it is even worth bothering with? It is working just fine (so far) on the older generic-PAE.

Aug 7, 2011Background: I was attempting to install new Nvidia drivers. When they didn't work, I madly attempted to uninstall, reinstall, different drivers and configuration files following advice posted on forums. There were many, many installs and restarts during this process, causing a variety of problems and errors. Currently, I have purged all the nvidia drivers except the nvidia-current ones with the xorg.conf file generated by running nvidia-xconfig.
Current problems: Boot process gets to purple Ubuntu screen with 5 changing dots beneath, but hangs there forever. Pressing esc reveals that the boot process gets to "checking battery state [ok]", but fails to load the login screen. Pressing ctrl-alt F1 allows me to log-in and startx successfully starts Xorg with the proper Nvidia drivers.Question:How can I fix things so that the system does not hang at the Ubuntu loading screen? Or, how can I diagnose what is causing the error?I suspect there may be a problem with the xorg.conf file that's being generated by nvidia-xconfig. Please take a look:

Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

Dec 4, 2009The upstream provider is supplying samba3x (currently samba 3.3.8) packages in their supplementary repository. I know that most of what is in the supplementary repository is burdened with restrictive or non-free licenses, however, Samba is not.
The samba3x packages are critical for Windows Server 2008 trust relationships as well as Windows 7 client support for a CentOS server acting as a Windows domain controller. I know that I can either roll my own packages or compile from source, but an officially supported version would be a much better option on a production server.Is there any way CentOS can "officially" supply these packages and their associated dependencies?

Apr 17, 2011After doing an update a couple of days ago (had previously upgraded to 5.6), the font size in firefox (file forward reload, etc), terminal and the panel (using xfce) are significately smaller. Searching the web, mail lists and the forums have not resulted in finding anyone else with this problem. I did notice that glibc has a bug that is currently being worked on at Redhat but it is unclear if the font problem I am seeing is related. Note also, that the initial upgrade to Centos 5.6 was successful.
