CentOS 5 :: RHEL Requires An I686 Compatible Processor?

Dec 11, 2010

I have a small AMD Geode LX 800 (500 MHz) based Nettop that I would like to use at home as home server managing printers, a central data storage, and some other things. Only I can't install CentOS 5.5 due to an Anaconda exception at the very end of the initial setup process, right before it's supposed to start copying the files.Is it true that CentOS/RHEL requires an i686 compatible processor? As far as I know the Geode LX is only i586 and Redhat's system requirements only list x86 as necessary.

General :: How To Tell What Distros Compatible With Processor

Jul 23, 2010

I have an old mini-desktop computer I want to have as a spare machine for internet browsing and checking email. It has a copy of XP currently, but the previous owner didn't put the key in so I can't get onto it at all. I plan on putting linux on it, just not sure what it can handle. It has 384 megs of RAM I believe, and the processor is a via C3, so I'm not even sure if I can run linux on it. I've checked the faqs and googled a bit, but I can't tell if it's i486, i586, or one of those things, and I'm not sure what linux distros(if any) are compatible. Will linux mint be able to run on a 900mhz processor of this sort and 384 megs of RAM? I'm thinking no, but it's the only linux distro I've dabbled with before. If not, will ubuntu? Will opensuse?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Unable To Install RHEL 5.2 On I686 Machine

Jun 16, 2010

I am not very new to LINUX. I was using UBUNTU for the last 1 year and I have switched to Redhat now because I am thinking of taking a RHCE certification now. Actually the problem is that I am unable to install RHEL 5.2 i386 on my i686 machine, I have bought it recently 1 week ago. I tried to use the boot parameter "linux noprobe" then it said drivers not found after 2 steps when it loads drivers.

When I tried to make a GUI install it hanged after "loading /sbin/loader" and said "kernel panic - not syncing". And when I tried to make a text install it said hanged agin after "loading /sbin/loader" and said something like "Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP". If drivers are needed then when can I get those and how can I install those drivers? here is my hardware information as "lspci" says:

CentOS 5 :: Pirut/yum: RHEL 5.1 - Maintain An Unregistered RHEL Box?

Feb 16, 2010

A client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software.My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.

This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.

Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Dell Optiplex 320 And Kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686.rpm Hang

Sep 17, 2010

I have read all of the articles I could find on the problems. I am using the lilo bootloader as grub doesn't work. I have also added pci=nomsi to my lilo.conf and ran lilo -v. I can get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-8.el5. However I can't get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686.rpm. When I boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686 the system hangs after it prints bios data check successful. I tried adding suppress-boot-time-BIOS-data to my lilo.conf (I ran lilo -v after the change) and the system still hangs. The Optiplex 320 is running bios 1.1.12

Why won't newer kernels work? Is there a way to get more information to print before the hang to aid in debugging?

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Get Client To Require Password Change When Centos-DS Requires It?

Oct 15, 2010

I am running ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with Centos Directory Server centralizedauthentication tool. I can log in just fine with my ubuntu client, however when go to my Directory Server and tell it to require a password change on reset for any of my users, the ubuntu client doesn't require the user to reset their password. the reason I need this to work is so I can reset a users password from the Directory server and then have it use what I set it to for their next login attempt but then require them to set their own password. After days of searching I have only found out that it can be done by setting the option in Directory Server but Ubuntu 10.04 seems to just ignore the option. I am using the libnss-ldapd and libpam-ldapd packages on the Ubuntu client because the libnss-ldap and libpam-ldap didn't work at all, what am I missing?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Boot Hangs With E1200 Processor?

Mar 28, 2009

System has a boot partition on raid1. The root filesystem is on RAID1/LVM.During the boot process, it gets to here:

Intel machine check architecture supported.
Intel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#1.
CPU1: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E1200 @ 1.60GHz stepping 0d

[code]...

most of the time, it will not reboot. I can cycle power, and, eventually, it does boot. So, hardware issue perhaps? Something else?What can I do, or add to the configuration to help debug this and figure out why? For boot options, I have tried noapic, apm=off, noht, nomce, nousb, nousbstorage, and none of those helped. As the machine is remote, to mess with console stuff, I have to get a KVM over IP hooked up, which I can do.

CentOS 5 :: Windows AD ACLS Used On Centos/RHEL Directories?

Aug 31, 2010

We are slowly migrating from a predominantly Windows house to a 50/50 Win/RHEL operation and even further in the future.Currently, we have a LOT of Windows folders that are created by custom applications which, upon creation of a new folder set, applies the corresponding ACL so that only the associated groups are able to access the folders. Now for the problem, we are migrating the applications to a RHEL55 environment and it is creating the folders on that system now but the groups are still residing in the Windows AD. Is there an "easy" (I know, a very relative term) to have the Windows groups given permission to the Linux shares without very much manual intervention?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Compatible Mini-PCI 802.11g Replacement For A Dell B130?

I have a Dell Inspiron B130 with a Broadcom PCI wireless card installed. I'm tired of doing the ndiswrapper shuffle every time I change OS's (about every 6 months), and am considering just yanking the Broadcom and replacing it with something that will work with Centos out of the box. Preferably it should also work well with Windows, as I may have to revert to XP in the future. Does anybody have any recommendations? Yes, I should look at the HCL, and yes, I plan to, but yes, I would like feedback from you, the expert users. I'm not sure how I will destroy the Broadcom card after I remove it; I'm thinking something involving a propane torch and/or a sledgehammer. I may post pictures.
