View 1 Replies View RelatedI do understand that to install software on linux distros that the main way is to have internet connectivity and to download them via RPM or to manually do this in terminal. Can you install software by downloading it from another PC via CD and install it in your Linux PC from the CD? Reason I ask is that I do not have a WLAN setup on my Linux PC yet and would like to install some programs or drivers while I am waiting to get a WLAN adapter that is compatible with Linux. Can you convert drivers or programs to an ISO image that can be installed on Linux? Another reason is that I have read that Wine can be used in the absence of MS Windows to run certain or a few programs in Linux as well as assist Linux to recognize drivers of hardware that is utilized for MS Windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to switch over to Unbutu 9.10 and I intend to run some .exe files on it. But to do that I need to install Wine. Unfortunately the only way I found to do that requires being connected to the internet in Unbutu. And I can connect to internet only by pluging in a modem and running executable file afterwards which is something I can't currently do with Unbutu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 9.10 (32-bit) onto a machine with Internet access, so it was easy for me to run the following commands to install OpenSSH and portmap:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
sudo apt-get install portmap
But now I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) onto a machine without internet access. How do I install openssh-server and portmap onto that machine?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am a user or consumer of Knoppix 5.1 and Knoppix 6.2, I see in 6.2 version a very usefully tool, an icon in task bar thats help my internet connection in auto, even if I use a mobile modem like Huawei E160, I only select a 'Auto Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection' and, voila, internet is active. Into version 5.1 don't exist this option. I need to find packages like network-manager.... and all relatives and install in 5.1 in correct order to success.
I just installed 11.4 via the net install cd. In the configuration step, the internet connection test fails. Why would this happen if I just installed opensuse using the internet? It looks to me as if opensuse can already figure out how to use my network card. I went ahead and skipped the test, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. Let's see if internet works once I'm logged in...
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter earlier problems with 11.2-32, I replaced the 8 year old MB with a new Asus and an AMD Athlon II dual core CPU, 4 GB of RAM. New HD. First install of openSuse 11.2-64 completed, but have not been able to update repositories and Firefox won't connect to any WWW server outside of the LAN. Errors are about not being able to download from repos, can't resolve address, yet from a terminal on the 11.2 machine I can ping download.opensuse.org, yahoo.com, and the DNS servers. But the Updater Applet says "repo not available:failed to download..." It appears some programs, including the Updater Applet, can't resolve download.opensuse.org while others can.
I've gone through the configs of Network Settings in 11.2 to make them match a working 11.1 install on another machine. I've looked at the fire wall settings (http is not an option on the pull down list), Checked the router settings, but that shouldn't be the cause since the machine with 11.1 operates normally from the same LAN.Another odd thing: Obviously can boot from the CD drive, but putting a data disk in, Dolphin doesn't show the files. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
Since the DVD is only 4.7GB and missing some stuff (e.g. pvm) I decided to download the network install /oss folder for openSUSE 11.2 so that I can install multiple copies locally and keep my bandwidth usage down.
I've downloaded the full /oss folder using wget -r and wget -cr during my ISP's free bandwidth slot (12-8am - and it took 2 sessions to get it all).Wget didn't throw up any errors so why the difference? Is there any (simple) way I can check the integrity of the download?
New installation of Squeeze. No Internet. I have googled and browsed but all the responses seem highly complex, involving editing files. But elsewhere it says "In effect, the goal of NetworkManager is to make networking Just Work."
What should I do next?
I don't really understand these commands, but they always seem to be asked for code...
