General :: HP Mini Wont Install Ubuntu?
Dec 31, 2010
I have a HP mini 210-1000 that I want to install dual boot Ubuntu with Windows. I have the installer for Ubuntu and have set the system to recognize a USB to select the .iso file. Although I see that the settings are the correct ones, the HP wont accept the .iso file and boot with the installer. Is there anyway to make the mini recognize the file and install the OS? Can I do it through windows somehow?

I have tried several different distros - but none seems to work. The pc is a HP mini 1000 with 16 Gb flashdisk, 1 Gb ram, American keyboard. It had an Win Xp installed when it was bought. Later it worked with an Ubuntu. My older son, who owned the pc before me, will not give me his password. He wanted me to install a fresh, new Linux.
I have now tried to install Ubuntu, Knoppix, PcLinux, Mandriva, Feodora and a few more, using the universal usb installer. Ubuntu, Slacks and Mandriva works fine from the usb-key. But when I try to install to the minis flashdisk, it freezes.
Ubuntu stops during the install process just after I have selected the keybord (I have tried default English and Danish).
Mandriva lets me format the flashdisk, but freezes with white screen just before the install is finished. There after Mandriva can start booting from the minis flashdisk, but it stops for a long time showing the startup screen. After very long time I get a terminal screen asking for login name and password. (I guess Mandriva wants the password from my sons Linux installation).

From what I understand, this problem can be solved easily but you have to insert the install disc into /cdrom/, but I'm on an HP Mini 110 netbook and obviously don't have a cdrom drive. Is there some way I could redirect it to my usb or something? It doesn't seem to present the option. Every other release works with my wireless, but this is the only one that works with my sound lol so I'm damned either way. I still use 9.10 sometimes because I love it but I have to hook it up to an ethernet connection and that kind of defeats the purpose of having a netbook

I am trying to get the Asus "My Cinema-U3100 Mini plus" DVB-T USB stick to work on my lucid 32bit with 2.6.32-27 kernel - with no great success so far. And this despite searching through forums and following the instructions given on [URL].
The USBID is in fact
Code:
ID 0b05:1779 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
Which is exactly the one shown in the list of supported devices on LinuxTV. I have implemented all modifications and corrections to the source files as outlined in the above LinuxTVWiki instructions.
I also added the boot option
Code:
usbhid.quirks=0x0b05:0x1779:0x0004
to grub2 in order to overcome the (initial) problem of the tuner being recognised as a HID device.
My dmesg output after plugging in the device now shows
Code:
Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.358488] usb 2-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.495359] usb 2-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
When I try to compile the af903x driver using
Code:
sudo make
The response on the screen is
Code:
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.32-27-generic/build SUBDIRS=/home/jens/Desktop/Linux_PC_AF9035_Afatech_2008.12.17/Linux-32bit_AF9035_20081217/AF903x_SRC modules

make: *** [default] Error 2
My knowledge is limited and I have no idea why I am getting all these warnings and finally the error message. Also, is there a way to tell when (or if at all) driver support for this device will be implemented in the Linux kernel?

Here's my problem:
New HP Mini 110. Atom N270. 2Gb RAM. 160Gb HDD
I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 Gnome Live from a USB stick. The installation worked well, but after the first reboot, the graphical loader just hangs with the progress bar having moved only a couple of pixels. Only way to recover is to power-off - CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing.
When I press 'Esc' on boot, to display the boot messages, I see the boot hangs at the following point:
"Loading drivers, configuring devices:"
trying again, this time adding the boot option "acpi=off" as recommended in another thread, gets me a little further, but the boot now fails at the following point:
"Set System Time to the current Hardware Clock"
Finally, booting in Failsafe mode gets all the way to a text mode login, but this is hardly a long-term work-around.
Has anyone got openSUSE 11.2 working on an HP Mini 110, or at least seen and solved this problem on another system? I can confirm openSUSE 11.2 works fine on my old Acer Aspire One A150, so I assume this is a specific issue on the HP.

Trying a minimal install with the mini.iso. I don't have a wired internet connection, only wireless from my iPhone which works fine with my full install of Ubuntu. The installer is not able to find my wireless connection stating "No Network Interfaces Detected". I did try to install yesterday in town with a friends wired internet connection and I got the same result. I'm able to get to the command line in the installer but have no idea how to start my wireless connection so the install can continue. I have searched here, and elsewhere on the net to the point of giving up.

I was having some trouble trying to get Fedora 12 installed on an HP Mini 2102. It would pause on "initializing hardware..." and I seem to recall having a similar problem with another HP mini as well. I found an old sticky note I had written to myself. It said:
add to grub kernel boot line:
"ssb.blacklist=1"
So at the install DVD grub menu, I pressed "Tab" to edit the line for installation and then appended "ssb.blacklist=1" to the line and it seems to be working now.

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]
I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]
After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:
Wireless Networks
Device not ready
A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

I like puppy apart from the file manager, you could probably download a different FM from the package manager, but i am looking for a new distro. I know DSL as well and i think it's good but there must be better. I will mainly be using it for 2 reason
a) Recover(backup) files from a windows system i can't boot into
b) To access the net of a system i can't boot into
1) Be under 200MB
2) Fast to boot
3) Have network support including wireless
4) Have sata support and ideally raid support
5) Good file manager
6) As windows like as possible
7) Easy to copy files from HD to usb stick and easy to set permissions .

Looking to build the first computer system from scratch and I have chosen Linux as my system. Learning about Linux is a must as I would like to get away from MS. Also, building the system will better equip me when I pursue a business venture within the next year or two.I presently take course work in accounting for a bachelor degree, but will attain another degree in software engineering, both from Herzing University. My present skill level in programming?

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I am brand new to linux and i am finding it really frustrating cause i always thought i had quite a knack for computers. ive looked online and searched a bunch of stuff but because im so new to linux i am having a hard time even understand some of the stuff. i really want to get comfortable/fluent with linux and unix and what not.
My netbook model is HP Compaq Mini 110 the distribution i am using is Linux Mint 10
My broadcom wifi device isnt working or something.
When i first installed mint, it said that i needed non-free drivers?
The ethernet cable instantly gave me connection and i was able to run updates but the wifi still doesnt work i think the updates only updated the free ones and not the non-free ones cause i dont remember ever specifying to download the non free ones how do i manually specify to download all available updates?
I also typed:
The output says:
Also when i right click on the little network sign on the bottom right corner, then it says "Wireless Networks device not read (firmware missing)"
