General :: Partition Gparted Fdisk / When Reduced The Size Of Some Linux Partitions Using Gparted?
Sep 18, 2009I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
General :: Hp Mini 1000 Freeze During Install
Sep 22, 2010I have tried several different distros - but none seems to work. The pc is a HP mini 1000 with 16 Gb flashdisk, 1 Gb ram, American keyboard. It had an Win Xp installed when it was bought. Later it worked with an Ubuntu. My older son, who owned the pc before me, will not give me his password. He wanted me to install a fresh, new Linux.
I have now tried to install Ubuntu, Knoppix, PcLinux, Mandriva, Feodora and a few more, using the universal usb installer. Ubuntu, Slacks and Mandriva works fine from the usb-key. But when I try to install to the minis flashdisk, it freezes.
Ubuntu stops during the install process just after I have selected the keybord (I have tried default English and Danish).
Mandriva lets me format the flashdisk, but freezes with white screen just before the install is finished. There after Mandriva can start booting from the minis flashdisk, but it stops for a long time showing the startup screen. After very long time I get a terminal screen asking for login name and password. (I guess Mandriva wants the password from my sons Linux installation).

Dec 31, 2010I have a HP mini 210-1000 that I want to install dual boot Ubuntu with Windows. I have the installer for Ubuntu and have set the system to recognize a USB to select the .iso file. Although I see that the settings are the correct ones, the HP wont accept the .iso file and boot with the installer. Is there anyway to make the mini recognize the file and install the OS? Can I do it through windows somehow?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install GParted?
Jan 15, 2010I just installed a dual boot of ubuntu with XP on my laptop. I'm planning on deleting XP altogether and keeping ubuntu. Now, as I understand the best way to do this is to go to GParted, delete the ntfs partition, and format it to ext3. Does this sound right? Now the problem is I can't seem to get GParted installed. I go to the terminal window and type sudo apt-get install gparted but it doesn't work. I get the following messege.

Jan 27, 2010I have a Ubuntu system where the internet has been whitelisted so that I can't use Synaptic. I was wondering if there was a way to install GParted without Synaptic? Do something with the ISO file perhaps? Or would this turn out to be quite complicated?

New HP Mini 110. Atom N270. 2Gb RAM. 160Gb HDD
I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 Gnome Live from a USB stick. The installation worked well, but after the first reboot, the graphical loader just hangs with the progress bar having moved only a couple of pixels. Only way to recover is to power-off - CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing.
When I press 'Esc' on boot, to display the boot messages, I see the boot hangs at the following point:
"Loading drivers, configuring devices:"
trying again, this time adding the boot option "acpi=off" as recommended in another thread, gets me a little further, but the boot now fails at the following point:
"Set System Time to the current Hardware Clock"
Finally, booting in Failsafe mode gets all the way to a text mode login, but this is hardly a long-term work-around.
Has anyone got openSUSE 11.2 working on an HP Mini 110, or at least seen and solved this problem on another system? I can confirm openSUSE 11.2 works fine on my old Acer Aspire One A150, so I assume this is a specific issue on the HP.

Apr 29, 2010I have been trying to resolve this issue and it's bewildering me... I have been trying to do the install on Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) and after setting up the keyboard language the installer locks up. The error message mentions it was unable to launch Gparted as it crashed.
I have also tried to launch Gparted from the system admin apps and Gparted will show it is trying to read the hard drives and then crashes. I have tried updating Gparted from the repo's and on launching it also crashes too.

May 7, 2010I was having some trouble trying to get Fedora 12 installed on an HP Mini 2102. It would pause on "initializing hardware..." and I seem to recall having a similar problem with another HP mini as well. I found an old sticky note I had written to myself. It said:
add to grub kernel boot line:
"ssb.blacklist=1"
So at the install DVD grub menu, I pressed "Tab" to edit the line for installation and then appended "ssb.blacklist=1" to the line and it seems to be working now.

Nov 11, 2010i installed win7 ultimate on a 2TB HD and was hoping to dual-boot it with meerkat, i did a standard install and shrunk the partition using win7 disk management to leave 500GB for ubuntu.problem is ubuntu can't detect the existing win7 install, when selecting advanced setup it just shows one big unallocated partition.
i went back into win7 and extended the partition again, then booted into ubuntu live cd to see if maybe gparted would do the trick. gparted also cannot detect the existing win7 install and just displays unallocated 1.82TB.in terminal if i do 'sudo parted /dev/sda print' i get this message:
Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table.However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should.Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Jan 19, 2010From what I understand, this problem can be solved easily but you have to insert the install disc into /cdrom/, but I'm on an HP Mini 110 netbook and obviously don't have a cdrom drive. Is there some way I could redirect it to my usb or something? It doesn't seem to present the option. Every other release works with my wireless, but this is the only one that works with my sound lol so I'm damned either way. I still use 9.10 sometimes because I love it but I have to hook it up to an ethernet connection and that kind of defeats the purpose of having a netbook

Aug 25, 2010I wonder if anyone can help me. A little background, I wanted to move my xp install to a bigger hard drive. I used Saikee's method and worked fine (as usual). My machine was a dual boot system, the xp partition was with little space so I get rid of my vista install, deleted its partition. That went fine also. Rebooted directly to XP.The problem is as follows:
a) In order to increase the size of my xp partition (old machine, athlon64 1gb of RAM) I moved my data partition to the left in order to have unallocated space near the xp partition. That was successful, I rebooted and everything was fine.
b) I run again Gparted and increased the size of the partition. Gparted told me the process was successfully applied. I rebooted.
c) after post I get the following error "error reading disk, press ctr-alt-del". I did it like five times and I get the same message.
d) With my xp install disk I tried fixboot and fixmbr and nothing changed
Since I have the original hd, I did it again, and the same thing happened after resizing xp partition, before the resizing process I was able to boot normally. I used Gparted live cd v 0.6.2 and as far as I recall I left "adjust to mib" option

May 9, 2010Trying a minimal install with the mini.iso. I don't have a wired internet connection, only wireless from my iPhone which works fine with my full install of Ubuntu. The installer is not able to find my wireless connection stating "No Network Interfaces Detected". I did try to install yesterday in town with a friends wired internet connection and I got the same result. I'm able to get to the command line in the installer but have no idea how to start my wireless connection so the install can continue. I have searched here, and elsewhere on the net to the point of giving up.

I've searched Google and this Forum with no luck; but perhaps I'm just not asking correctly. Any help - even a workaround Is there a way to use something other than partman, or to mount the root, home, and swap in a way that makes partman skip it during install?

Apr 30, 2010how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.

Oct 10, 2010Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.
