General :: Can Mac Mini Server Be Booted Off Either Of Its Two Disks

Nov 15, 2010

Can a Mac Mini, Server edition, be booted off either of its two disks?

I'm interested in having one disk with OSX Server on it, and the other a dual boot Linux/Windows, to get around OSX's fussiness about boot loaders.

General :: Best Mini Distro With Good File Server?

Jan 17, 2010

I like puppy apart from the file manager, you could probably download a different FM from the package manager, but i am looking for a new distro. I know DSL as well and i think it's good but there must be better. I will mainly be using it for 2 reason

a) Recover(backup) files from a windows system i can't boot into
b) To access the net of a system i can't boot into

1) Be under 200MB
2) Fast to boot
3) Have network support including wireless
4) Have sata support and ideally raid support
5) Good file manager
6) As windows like as possible
7) Easy to copy files from HD to usb stick and easy to set permissions .

CentOS 5 :: Get The System Booted To A Bare Minimum Required To Install Chef (Server Management Software)?

Aug 20, 2010

I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system. If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.

All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

I have been dual booting my XP and Ubuntu for a while now. However, my pc monitor does not turn on until I am booted into windows/linux. This means I have to 'guess' to a certain extent which OS to select on boot (using GRUB). I expect I will have to change a setting in the BIOS but I am not too sure what to look out for.

After turning on my pc I have to restart it for it too do anything, it appears to just hang! However as I cannot see what is happening due to the monitor problem I am completely in the dark as to why it would do this/what is going on! I have XP installed at the front of my hard drive and Ubuntu at the back. It worked ok the first time I tried it after install (still had the monitor problem but was able to guess) then after that this random problem!

Debian Hardware :: Servers Which Contain SATA Disks And SAS Disks?

Feb 25, 2010

I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?

I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);

dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)

(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)

1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)

Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

General :: Adjusting Screen Resolution On Ubuntu 10.10 Booted From Disk?

Dec 16, 2010

I just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.

Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.

EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.

General :: Replace Ubuntu On Dual-Booted Machine Without Losing Other OS?

Question is: Is it possible to install the new OS on the partition that now contains Ubuntu, without disturbing my Windows Vista partition? (I just need Vista for occasional use of MagicJack- otherwise I'd gladly just wipe the whole disk)

Can I just boot my Ubuntu live CD and run Disk Utility and delete the Ubuntu partition? (I prefer to use GUI rather than CLI).

Should I format partitions on each disk, and then add them to a raid, or should I create a raid on unformated disks and then format the raid as a partition? Does it matter, and are there performance/reliability issues? I'm creating a RAID-5 using 3 SATA disks on RHEL for user data area.

Ubuntu :: Installing Maverick/Lucid Server On Asus TS Mini?

Nov 6, 2010

Mentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...

-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.

I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.

Server :: Disks Not Mounted After Unexpected Power Down

Apr 30, 2011

For some reason we have some network storage not mounted properly after an unexpected restart (ie OS or memory issue) and the subsequent reboot. Has anyone come across this before? It's a bit strange that certain disks are not mounted.Anyway, to detect this, can we insert an extra line into the /etc/inittab to perform post start checks. For example, I have inserted an extra line before the runlevel scripts in /etc/inittab file.

The line will call /usr/local/fstab-check.sh to perform a check on the disks mounted via /etc/fstab. Am thinking of comparing the output from the command "df" versus the content of /etc/fstab.

Server :: Using Terminal Commands To Wipe Disks?

Dec 14, 2010

I'm attempting to do a low level wipe of a server in our office. I originally attempted to use DBAN but it wouldn't recognize the disks.

I've now moved on to attempting to use a Live Boot of Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB drive.

I'm using the following terminal command - sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M

When I did this the first time it simply wiped the USB drive that had Ubuntu on it.

What do I need to do in order to have it wipe all 4 disks on the server instead of the USB Drive?

Server :: RAID 6 Array Coming Up With All Disks As Spare

Mar 25, 2011

I have been running a server with an increasingly large md array and always been plagued with intermittent disk faults. For a long time, I've attributed those to either temperature or power glitches. I had just embarked on a quest to a) lower case and drive temperature. They were running between 43 and 47C, sometimes peaking at 52C, so I've added more case fan power and made sure the drive cage was in the flow (it has it's own fan, too). Also, I've upgraded my power supply and made very sure that all the connectors are good. The array currently is a RAID6 with 5 Seagate 1,5TB drives.

When everything seemed to be working fine, I looked at my SMART logs and found that two of my drives (both well over 14000 operating hours) were showing uncorrectible bad blocks. Since it's RAID6, I figured, I couldn't do much harm, ran a badblocks test on it, zeroed the blocks that were reported bad, figuring the drive defect management would remap them to a good part of the disk and zeroed the superblock. I then added it back to the pack and the resync started. At around 50%, a second drive decided to go and shortly thereafter a third. Now, with two out of five drives, RAID6 will fail. Fine. At least, no data will be written to it anymore, however, now I cannot reassemble the array anymore.

Whenever I try I get this:
Code:
mdadm --assemble --scan
mdadm: /dev/md1 assembled from 2 drives and 2 spares - not enough to start the array

Code:
cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [linear]
md1 : inactive sdf1[4](S) sde1[6](S) sdg1[1](S) sdh1[5](S) sdd1[2](S)
7325679320 blocks super 1.0
md0 : active raid1 sdb2[0] sdc2[1]
312464128 blocks [2/2] [UU]
bitmap: 3/149 pages [12KB], 1024KB chunk

Which is not fine. I'm sure that three devices are fine (normally, a failed device would just rejoin the array, skipping most of the resync by way of the bitmap) so I should be able to reassemble the array with the two good ones and the one that failed last, then add the one that failed during the resync and finally re-add the original offender. However, I have no idea how to get them out of the "(S)" state.

Code:
mdadm --examine /dev/sdd1
/dev/sdd1:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 1.0
Feature Map : 0x1
Array UUID : d79d81cc:fff69625:5fb4ab4c:46d45217 .....
