i want to install ubuntu in my dell..ive already installed one in my desktop can i use that installer to my dell mini inspiron 10?? i have a usb hard drive..or better to use usb stick? well what about blackbuntu? seems awesome can i install that in my dell?

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

I've tried changing xorg.conf but that caused my machine to grind to a halt and I had to copy the original .conf file back over before I could launch GNOME again. I'm trying to install Photran for Eclipse 3.6. I've managed to get 3.6 and it works but the next step involves choosing a package that I just can't see because my screen resolution is too small.
I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and for some reason it isn't detecting any wireless networks. The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. I tried troubleshooting using this htmlAt the "check for device recognition" step, the terminal tells me that it's disabled, but as far as I can tell there isn't a physical switch that allows me to turn the wireless on or off, and again, it works perfectly fine when I use XP. I just installed the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop packages from the packman repository. Then there is a new entry in the bootmanager menu. Using that one, WLAN works fine.By the way: Can somebody explain me the difference between the broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop, broadcom-wl-kmp-default, broadcom-wl-kmp-pae, broadcom-wl-kmp-xen packages? I did not find any documentation about that.
I have ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition on my usb. But, when I go to install it, by restarting and then clicking F12 (is F12 the right one?) and the menu comes up. So i select boot with removable disk, but then it just resumes to boot as windows as it normally does. I need to get this menu right so I can install Ubuntu...My computer is a Dell inspiron mini 10 (1012).

The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenSUSE since vesrion 10.x and I never have problems to install latest version of OpenSUSE. Last week end I decided to upgrade my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) from version 11.3 to version 11.4. I performed clean install (I have separate home partition so I have no problems with my info) but when setup goes to last step "Prepare first time automatic configuration" (top progress bar shows 3% and bottom progress bar shows 10%) my laptop hangs and Capslock Led and the led next to it start blinking together. I tried 3 times and every time the same thing happened. After that I installed 11.3 again (without problems) and then I tried to run upgrade to 11.4 from 11.4 DVD. Upgrade finished successfully but when openSUSE tries to start my laptop hangs in the same way as before . So I decided to go back to 11.3 and I did it without problems even I've upgraded KDE to 4.6 successfully.

The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.

I know that I have to have acpi=off to work, and got Linux Mint 7 installed from the live cd but want Xubuntu. The Xubuntu 9.1 live CD works fine as long as I put the acpi=off parameters in the boot string, and I check the additional options just to be sure. I have a 4-5 year old dell inspiron 600m that i have been running on linux ubuntu for the past 2-3 years. Last week i took it apart to paint the casing, got that done and since I put it back together it has a tendency to become very hot. When i got it back together i also installed a good number of updates.
Also, I can no longer stream videos/ music from the internet. I am not sure if i messed something up when i was putting it back together, or if something in these updates has caused a problem. I have always been able to stream on previous installs, and i cannot honestly remember if i could before i took it apart. i am trying to watch a video on ..... and the cpu usage went clear to 100% and the cpu temperature went up to 99 Deg Celcius. The audio and video didnt even match but for a second or two at the very beginning. When the computer is sitting idle browsing the internet the cpu usage is very low, maybe avg. 15% and the temp drops to 55deg C fairly quickly.
I am not able to adjust the brightness in ubuntu. I am using gnome and ubuntu 10.04. I can see some folders DD01, DD02 in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/ with value as given below. cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD01/brightness <not supported>

How best to get from 9.04 to 10.04 on my Dell Mini 9?
I hadn't upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 because I read that the WiFi card no longer worked with 9.10 on the DM9. What I see now indicates that to get from 9.04 to 10.04 I MUST go thru 9.10. If that is the case, I won't be able to download 10.04 because I won't have a WiFi connection.
it was working fine. Then when I tried to turn my Dell Mini 9 off it did not respond so I "forced" to turn it off with button. Now it does not find the OS! The only solution is to reinstall 10.04 netbook version again? (I'm downloading iso right now because I had already deleted it...)
