I am having a hard time finding a descriptive solution on how to fix the sound on my HP Mini 110-3135DX. I just got it and put Ubuntu on it. "how to fix the sound for dummies".

I am brand new to linux and i am finding it really frustrating cause i always thought i had quite a knack for computers. ive looked online and searched a bunch of stuff but because im so new to linux i am having a hard time even understand some of the stuff. i really want to get comfortable/fluent with linux and unix and what not.
My netbook model is HP Compaq Mini 110 the distribution i am using is Linux Mint 10
My broadcom wifi device isnt working or something.
When i first installed mint, it said that i needed non-free drivers?
The ethernet cable instantly gave me connection and i was able to run updates but the wifi still doesnt work i think the updates only updated the free ones and not the non-free ones cause i dont remember ever specifying to download the non free ones how do i manually specify to download all available updates?

It used to work, and now it don't. I would assume that something went amiss after a recent update, but don't exactly now for how long the sound hasn't been working.
The sound isn't muted- afaict, but nothing comes out of the speakers.

I love my new HP Mini netbook, but every time I click 'shut down', there is this horrible buzzing sound that comes out of the speakers. I have the sound muted, but still the sound comes blaring out. This is very disruptive in class and I get a lot of nasty looks. If I have headphones plugged in, the sound blares through the headphones, even if sound is muted.
I'm thinking that this is a problem with PulseAudio.I searched and there are two previous posts: here and here. The second one says 'SOLVED', but obviously it is not.I'm running UNR Karmic.

i did the right thing and posted this on the mac fedora list, but it seems too few people hang out there and there were no replies at all for quite some time, so i have no other option but to try the general support list.problem:on both fc10 & 11, sound works within a browser e.g. [playing flash such as videos cnn and fox videos etc.problem is, as soon as i play a cd or a dvd, then the sound is completely dead afterwards.somehow dvd's and cds completely disables sound.

Im having an odd problem with an installation of 10.04 on my Macbook (the white one with firewire, dunno which generation). Sound works fine from built-in speakers, but when i plug in headphones i have no sound at all..
The levels in alsamixer are all fine, so no problem there..

Im running the latest Debian version, 6.0 on my Dell Mini 9.Webcam and sound work, but microphone is a no-go.In Alsamixer (1.0.23), I have Capture, Digital, and Mic settings all the way up. There are no options for adjusting "Front" mic settings. (May have been for older alsamixer versions?)In Sound Recorder, playback has loud noise/feedback? I'm not sure how to interpret the above, but I am just trying to offer as much relevant background information as I can.I've been scouring forums for the answer, but to no avail. Most questions/answers are from 2008, and couldn't find a solution. I'm not very handy with the Linux machine, but love to learn / am learning.

I've managed to install openSuse 11.4, and have also managed to get the sound working properly, but the mic doesn't seem to be working.
My system is a hp mini 110 3000 netbook which came pre installed with windows 7. I'd install ubuntu on this before switching to openSuse, and in ubuntu the mic was working.
Also, I can't get bluetooth and the sd card reader working. I've got the ath9k driver installed, and WLAN works perfectly on that, but bluetooth doesn't.

after installing linuxmint lxde on my netbook the microphone wasnt working i followed the guide here [URL] and now nothing audio related is working, when i open alsa mixer it is completly blank, i dont even have the little speaker icon in the corner anymore. I would like to get all audio working with the microphone but priority right now would be getting back to were i started upon doing that modprobe command thingy the device does show up... also upon following that guide it made a folder in my home directory called soundtmp... and it wont let me delete it, how can i delete it?

Long term Fedora user, I have recently decided to set up a small shuttle computer as a media centre (using mythTV), data store/NAS (so all my data is centralized), mini web server, etc. After installing I had the fun of trying to get my audio working correctly (which I did eventually .. after finding out I unplugged the audio after the second reboot and solved it after somewhere). After this, I got internet video searching working through mythTV using adobe Flash. I then went to bed only to find the internet not working (can't telnet, can't traceroute, can't anything). This is both as the mythtv user I have set up and as root.
The setup I have is:
PC -> router -> interweb
192.168.1.7 -> 192.168.1.1 -> interweb
I also have a laptop (F12) which is on 192.168.1.5.
The laptop has access to the internet just fine (no problem at router / interweb).
I have the only access to the router and disabled any ISP access (no changes in router).
I have the only access to the PC (no changes in PC).
I have set SElinux to permissive (no selinux issues).
I have temporarily disabled iptables on the PC (not firewall issue).
So, I decided to look at the differences between my two machines on the network. Initially the PC was missing the route:

I changed the services on startup so thet 'NetworkManager' was off, but 'network' started (exactly like my laptop). I turned off avahi-daemon, and any other network sort of daemon which doesn't match my laptop (which I have also customized).

Would it be work me doing a tcpdump or wireshark dump etc ('tcpdump > file' would be easier for me)?

I set up my Mac Mini to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I started with Windows only, and allowed it to rewrite the partition table (GPT/MBR). When I tried to install Ubuntu, it didn't see Windows until I used Gdisk to delete the GPT portion. Then it recognized the Windows partition and installed Ubuntu as per normal. Now when I boot, I get GRUB and the option to boot Ubuntu or Windows 7. The only problem is that the USB keyboard (Aluminum or standard PC keyboard) doesn't work until an OS is loaded.
Is this an EFI problem? I'm starting to think that EFI is required for USB keyboard support at bootup since it replaces the BIOS functionality. Is this even remotely accurate? Did I mess things up by not going the rEFIt route? I'm not sure what I can do at this juncture as I can only boot into Ubuntu.
I could install OS X, rEFIt, then Windows and Ubuntu, keeping rEFIt as the boot loader, but if there's an easy solution I'd like to avoid that. More importantly, I'd like to understand what's going on.

I bought a Rock Mini keyboard with touchpad MSZ-KBTP. The touchpad is working with fedora 14 but some of the keys are not what they should be. I tried changing the keyboard layout under gnome keyboard settings but the keyboard is not listed.

New user to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to a mini-laptop, but the built-in wireless card/chip is not working. It worked under the previous OS, XP. There is a switch on the case frame that enables it, but the active light did not turn on during installation. I installed a second time and manually flicked the switch every one second to see if it needed human intervention, but to no avail.
My next step was to try to update Ubuntu to see if it would help, so I inserted a Belkin USB wireless, but the connection was intermittent at best. I believe the device is faulty. A wired connection is impossible as I am sharing with my neighbor. What should I do to help Ubuntu the internal wireless device?

It works under Windoze but in Linux the integrated mouse doesn't work. Whilst it's forced me to learn some keyboard shortcuts, the mouse would help a lot.
This is my media PC. I run currently run Mandriva 2008 & use Kafiene to watch/record etc TV.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop using Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-card (This is what Windows Vista says I have). I have installed Ubuntu as dual boot with existing Windows Vista. Wireless is not working in Ubuntu but working flawlessly in Windows.

v been trying to fix this for a few days now, and the stress has been building up. I have searched for hours on end trying to fix my sound, and If i can't fix it soon ill have to spend another few hours going back to Windows XP even though i wiped my harddrive for Linux Ubuntu 9.1.My issue is, that my sound changes from what it should be, to a dummy stereo output sound. I am running Debian Lenny with the default Gnome desktop. When I set up a new user the sound is not available. It says the device in not installed. I have used the Gnome system menu as follows.System, Administration, Users and Groups, then used the add user button and entered the appropriate info. I then went and clicked on the properties button and then the User Privileges section and checked off the "use audio devices" button. Still no sound. When I go to System, Preferences, Sound, Devices, and do the sound tests I get report that device is not installed.
When I am logged in to the user (jon) that I set up when doing the D.Lenny install, the sound on all various media play back works fine.There is one with 1 exception when loged in to this user(jon). I can not get any sound from the system sounds like select check box = toggle .wav, chose menu item = beep, etc. It would be realy nice to know how to repair or configure tis issue as well.under system info, pci devices it lists as follows Multimedia audio controller, Intel Corp 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW. Mother board is a ECS 915P-A2 and I guess about 2007 or so vintage. 1 G mem installed and a P-4 2.66 chip. It has the sound built in to it. It works fine on WinXP.

Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

My sound on Runescape stops and picks up, is very choppy and annoying. I'm using Debian "Lenny". Sound on everything else works just fine (Flash, VLC, etc...)
