View 2 Replies View RelatedI am thinking about installing Ubuntu dualboot with Windows 7. However, I feel that it'd be a pain to select Windows 7 constantly as it is my main OS for work and school. Ubuntu would be for offtime tinkering and as such probably booted once or twice a week at most. I intend to use the system to use the OS not to use it for serious work. Before I install would it be possible to install it in Dualboot while maintaining the ability to boot W7 by default unless pressing a special key to come to the Grub bootloader or something like that.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not consistently able to boot into Ubuntu Lucid on my new dual boot (w/ Win7) setup. Machine is a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Usually it takes 1-3 tries of hard shut down and restart before the OS starts up. Boot info script results are below. Windows starts up fine everytime. What I usually get is this: Dell startup screen, then Grub2 menu, then after selecting Linux kernal a blinking cursor at upper left of monitor and it just hangs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my Ubuntu linux to Ubuntu 10.4, not my grub menu isnt letting me boot to Windows Partition.The problem seems to be with grubs new update from using an editable menu.lst file to using a non editable grub.cfg file. Everywhere I look it states "DO NOT EDIT THE GRUB.CGF FILE". I am at a loss as what to do. I figured that the new configuration has screwed up the Windows Boot File. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I am not sure if it is a windows issue or an issue with the Grub boot menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got an old Sony Vaio from a friend & wanted to keep a stripped down version of windows along side 10.04. During installation when I saw two Windows partitions. I saved the first one which was about 5 gig & deleted the other bigger partition & used ext4 on the free space for Ubuntu. I assume I only kept the recovery partition so basically I have sda1 (recovery partition)ntfs & the rest ext4. If I pick Windows from the grub menu at start-up the recovery starts but then shuts down with an error. I'm assuming its looking for the other ntfs partition to install & can't find it but I'm not sure what to do. I haven't done anything with Ubuntu yet so deleting & reinstalling is not a problem but if I do getting back to the restore menu probably will be. I don't have any disks that came with the computer either.

Last time I re-installed Windows after Linux I ended up having to re-install Linux again afterwards as well, because I couldn't recover it (seemingly due to complications from encryption). So this time I'm wanting to plan and avoid that.

As there is a "Microsoft Reserved" partition and a separate Microsoft directory within the EFI partition, if I just go ahead and reinstall Windows will it install it's boot loader/image to one of it's own partitions? And NOT affect anything else like Grub and other Linux things?
Logic tells me yes, but there seems to be many issues on the internet about installing Windows after Linux.
My primary concern is whatever happens with Windows or anything to do with dual loading etc, is that Linux will still just boot, or I can get it working again without much hassle.

I've a Lenovo G50-80T with W8.1. I want to install Debian 8.1 in dualbooting mode. I've done this other times without problems. But this time I want encrypt the Linux partition (not the Windows partition). I'll use dm-crypt to do that. I want to know if this way is secure for protect the data on Linux partition or if I need encrypt the entire drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to achieve my dream (but indeed not perfect) boot scenario: dual-boot OpenSUSE and Fedora with shared /boot, /home and SWAP partitions. First I installed OpenSUSE (sda3 on my layout below) with separate /boot (sda2), /home (sda5, encrypted) and SWAP (sda6), next I installed Fedora on /dev/sda1, and pointed it to mount sda2, sda5, sda6 with respective mount points, without formatting. I proceeded with the installation without installing new GRUB bootloader (overwriting an existing one).
It was successfull and now I'm back in OpenSuSE trying to edit menu.lst file (under /boot/grub) to make GRUB boot Fedora.
I attached a copy of menu.lst I cooked up for now. OK, it's a mess. Life would be allot easier if I didn't have a separate /boot partition, as I could just chainload, but it's no longer possible (or is it?). May be I needed to specify the resume device or problem is in initrd? below are the contents of /boot:
The problem is that I need to use windows as well every now and then for gaming. So I have an internal hard drive dedicated to windows out of my laptop and one inside for kubuntu. Changing hard drives out every time I game is a bit of a bother and wondered if anybody has booted into windows without fiddling about with the hard drives. Can windows be booted from outside the laptop? (e.g. by using a sata to USB converter frame)?

Due to my observation, the computer has 3 primary partitions when I firstly got it: 12.7 GB, whose property is system recovery (empty and hidden); 100MB whose properties are ACTIVE, primary partition; partition C whose properties are BOOT, system, primary partition, crash dump and page file. Seems that when the machine starts, it firstly read the 100MB partition and then it is leaded to the partition C, where the windows 7 is installed. I SHRINKED THE PARTITION C AND CREATED 3 LOGICAL DRIVES.
Now I want to install OpenSuSE 11.4 on one of my logical drives. What should I do to keep all things well, which means I will be able to dual-boot and also keep my recovery function well? What's more, what I do not want is that the windows 7 cannot be chosen at boot or neither of them can boot!

1) If I flag the boot partition 'hidden' in Gparted, it does what I want in Ubuntu but not in Windows; in Windows you can see the hidden partition, 'Wubi', and not the storage one. Does it simply depend on the physical position of the partitions on the memory stick?
2) I am using Unetbootin and Gparted (both GUIs). Should I prepare the live boot partition before or after partitioning the memory stick?
3) How much memory should I allow for the live boot partition?

I'm running a dual boot of Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. For months now everything has been just wonderful. Recently, however, I tried to add another partition (in windows) and saw that my Ubuntu partition is recognized as RAW. I formatted it as NTFS originally. In Ubuntu, it is recognized correctly (ext4). I don't know what's going on. I'd like to be able to install drivers to recognize this partition in Windows. Will I have to reformat? I'm not sure if it's at all connected, but probably worth mentioning: while booting into Ubuntu, I received an error about "usplash mode failed." It also said something about "mount of filesystem failed." (I really, really wished I had written down the error message.) Everything seems to work now.

Recently, I joined a CST program at a local college, and there is an entire mod on Linux. I'm at the top of my class, and I aim to stay that way, so I found out what distro they were using, and downloaded openSUSE 11.3. I tried to install it once, and I failed, though I didn't screw up my Windows...much.
I've created an entire 132GB partition, and a 3 or 4GB swap, but I keep getting an error about the boot loader not being on a partition entirely below 128GB. So, I set the partition for 127.98GB, and still with the error.
I'm no slacker when it comes to working with Windows, but when it comes to Linux, of any type, I'm horrible. I need to be able to install the fully functional openSUSE OS alongside my Windows 7 Ultimate, without completely screwing my Windows install up. I can recover, so I'm not afraid to try new things.

When I installed Ubuntu I set it up to dual-boot with windows and didnt put much thought into the partition sizes, and now I want to make the ubuntu partition bigger. I shrunk the windows partition from gparted fine and then booted up off my ubuntu 10.04 disk to make the ubuntu partition bigger, but it won't let me do so from gparted. View 8 Replies View RelatedLast week I installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on his Windows Vista machine, it has a 200GB hard-drive and he wanted 100GB for Vista & 100GB for Ubuntu on there. So instead of selecting the default partition I split it to 100GB each.
Now, however, I can't boot back into Windows and when it loads I am taken to the 'Recovery Tools' options. Have I 'cked up his partition? I can still view all the files/folders on his Windows partition from within Ubuntu however, so maybe there is a chance I can shrink down the Ubuntu partition again and restore his Windows partition?

I've shrunk my Windows partition to ~200GB and made ~100GB of free space for Ubuntu BUT .. it doesn't allow me to create a new partition there as I already have 4 primary ones.Since all of the given partitions ( including Recovery and Tools ) can not be touched ( removed ), I have no idea on how to solve this ..

I have a new 250GB hard disk and want to use it to dual boot windows xp and ubuntu. i know i will have install xp first, but what would be they best way to partition the drive ? i want to be able to have some space in xp to to download and use 3d simulation programs and for gaming. and i also want to be able to see all my data from both OS.I guess i'll have to choose the manually partition the drive option on the ubuntu installation, but then what should i do exactly? and what would the partition types be? I previously installed windows 7 in my laptop and i would like to have ubuntu and windows 7 in dual boot. in order to do that i need to free up some space to be able to install to create partitions for ubuntu and the swap even if I have 30GB of unused space.
When i launch the live cD and i reach the step 4 ubuntu is actually recognising three operating systems installed:
- windows 7 (loader) under dev/sda1 (92,86GB) NTFS
- windows NT/2000/XP (which is corresponding to my "HP recovery" partition) under dev/sda2 en FAT32 (6,2GB)
- windows XP embedded (I don't unerstand what it is) under dev/sda3 NTFS (1,1GB)
when I go to the step 6 to modify the size of sda1 to free up some space, i don't have the possibility to change it, i can read "unknown" under the used space collumn.
I also tried to resize this partition using gparted but unfortunately i had the same problem, when i select it all the options to modify it are greyed out and i can notice a key near the hard drive logo (is it locked ?).
