General :: Ubuntu Hanging On Login After Editing Pam.d

Jan 9, 2010

In the process of trying to make Ubunti authenticate with AD2008, I followed some instructions and edited files as follows:

# /etc/pam.d/common-account
account sufficient pam_winbind.so
account required pam_unix.so
# /etc/pam.d/common-auth

[Code]....

After doing this I can no longer log in, it just hangs on the brown screen after logging in... it also asks me for my password twice before authenticating?

Ubuntu :: Gnome-do Hanging System And Login

Jun 16, 2010

I'm running a fresh install of Lucid without any issues thus far. I have my computer setup to log me in automatically, without requesting a password.

I installed Gnome-do and set it up to run at login (as I always have). After a reboot, my system is not responding to input from my mouse or keyboard. I can move my cursor, but it will not accept input.

I see gnome-do, which is partially covered by the "Unlock keyring" dialog" (which always comes up, I think to unlock my wifi).

Jul 26, 2011

I have an acer one 522 netbook. I have installed Natty as a new install but if I don't have the network cable plugged in the system hangs at the login screen. This is prior to me having any input. Sometimes I can hit enter and get the password box but it freezes before I can input any information. Had a look at syslog and cant see anything wrong. Cant seem to find the messages log. why this would happen? If it continues and there is no solution I will install 10.04 instead

General :: Computer Keeps On Hanging?

Oct 17, 2010

two months ago i bought a fujitsu siemens pc (pentium 4)and installed ubuntu 8.04. initially the computer was very slow and you couldnt run many applications at once, in the end it just becomes very slow and even hangs. it could take years to open open office word processor, so i thought it had a problem with the RAM. it initially had a RAM of 256MB, so i bought another 256MB and made it 512. it started to work very fast and it could open word so fast, i could run many applications at once until recently when it began to hang again even when there is only one application running, but it still is very fast, though it hangs often, is there a solution for this problem? i am oftenly forced to restart the machine and its boring.

General :: Hanging Fedora When It Is Booting?

Jul 19, 2011

I'm having problems booting up my Fedora 14 system. I see the Fedora splash screen (the one with the egg-like logo that colorizes as it loads); the logo fills up completely and then everything hangs - all I see is the egg logo, and nothing else is ever displayed. I also can't get to any of the ttys via the CTRL-F1 sequences.

I can boot into single user mode just fine. The install scripts all run just fine. The system itself is actually up an running, so I suspect this is either something in the KDE startup, or after init processes all of the start up scripts.

I'm assuming this isn't a startup script problem, because I see a "started XXX" message for every service in the rc.5 directory - in other words, all the startup scripts ran from rc.5.

So, how do I find out what is hanging? I'm not seeing anything in /var/log/messages, and pstree didn't tell me much about what init was doing.

I used to be able to follow inittab to see all the things it did at boot, but since inittab was stripped of everything it used to do a few releases ago, I don't know what init is doing anymore.

I have an old laptop that I installed EasyPeasy Lucid on. I have never used Grub2 as my other Ubuntu installs still use Grub Legacy. I have studied all the tutorials which instruct that the grub.cfg file should not be edited directly. This old laptop has one of the dreaded Intel graphics chips for which the kernel automatically loads the i915 module. Of course (like a multitude of others with Intel graphics and Lucid) I booted into a black screen but knew the workaround was to enable mode setting through grubI used the

they are all mostly the same length, but it would be nice to specify a relative position for my credits. e.g. show a static image for 10 seconds when the video is at 95%

General :: Editing / Making A Keyboard Map?

Mar 13, 2011

I am just entering the Linux world. All these years I wanted to test Linux but did not have the resources to make a new computer. Then I found Puppy Linux by chance. Nearly all the work I do with Windows 7/XP can be done with Puppy Linux. I am running it from a CD. I developed a smartfont for an Indic language called Sinhala, which uses ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1, SBCS) character set.It makes typing Sinhala, one of the more complex of Indic scripts, easy.

Essentially, this is a transliteration of the 'complex' script into Latin character set and then showing it back in the native script by way of the smartfont. See it here: [URL] Of course, you have no clue what it says. If you copy the text and look, you'll understand what is going on. You can type it with the dead-key keyboard. Only problem is that in certain situations, the font makes conjoint letters where you don't want them. You can prevent it by inserting the ZWNJ, Zero-width non-joiner (u200C), but the keyboard does not have it. Is there a way to edit the keyboard layout and make a modified key layout?
