General :: GNOME3 / Shell Quick Music Access
Apr 16, 2011
After having been a Gnome user since initial release in 1999, I have now upgraded to Gnome3. I figured despite everyone's moaning, over 10 years of a successful desktop means I should give it a fair go.
One thing: If I have a music player such as Rhythmbox open, how can I change track without breaking my current task focus and heading to "Activities" now that the notification area icon is no more? I change track alot, do I really want to change windows to do it?

I didn't see the gnome3's quick launcher (the quick start bar like MAC) When I install GNOME3 via apt ppa repo. I'm on maverick. Do I have to remove the awn-manager prevously installed?

Launchy is a great piece of software, I use it on Windows mainly for quickly accessing folders. I love its auto-indexing in the background, and hardly ever browse through folders manually these days, solves me lots of time.
On Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), I usually "live" in the terminal, however. Therefore, Launchy on Linux (or Gnome Do, or its other replacements) are not what I need - as it opens the file manager, and I don't need the file manager.
What I do need is something that indexes my folders and lets me cd into them quickly in the terminal. For example:

Since I installed Fedora15 (2 or 3 months ago) I've been trying to use the alternate-tab extension (I just HATE the new behaviour). But every time I try to use it Gnome crashes (I get a message along the lines of "Oh no, something went wrong...") and I have to log out.
Is this extension working for somebody? Is there any alternative (short of not using Gnome3 )?

I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my laptop and I decided to try out the Gnome 3 shell. I really like the design and I like the way it functions so I would like to keep using it, but it seems as though every time I install a new application or package it breaks Gnome 3. This is really frustrating because when I then try to log in it just gives me that cryptic error message that im sure you all have heard about "Oh No! Something went wrong!" or something like that and then it tells me to log out.
I know a fair bit about linux in general, but im no expert by any stretch of the imagination (my experiences have been with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, and some older distros) so im only used to the Apt-get package manager and I find zypper to not be very understandable. So I don't know if im breaking Gnome 3 every time I install something because of some dependencies not getting installed. My laptop is running a Intel cure 2 duo processor and an Intel mobile graphics chipset (which runs gnome 3 fine normally).

I have small problem with GNOME in Wheezy (trying it out just for fun). Whenever I start GNOME Shell and open any window, I get only blue color where windows should be. Entire window is just blue. Shell starts fine. GNOME Classic starts and works well too, even better than MATE in Jessie. My graphics card is old NVidia GeForce MX 440 8x AGP. I suspect it is causing problems.
Kernel is Wheezy's 3.2.
Found this: [URL] ....
I'm afraid I can't use GNOME Shell in Wheezy. Might try Jessie's version instead.

I have recently changed to using gnome3 shell and after an initial familiarisation i find its usability far better than other desktops and judging by the recent articles and blogs it will be the future so the earlier people start using it the better it will be. I am sure there will be a few bugs to fix, but one thing I have noticed is that in the applications list the app for 'Desk Top Effects' is there, given that gnome 3 does not use compiz nad actually uses clutter why is it there. My curiosity got the better of me and i tried to enable it, which resulted in immeadiate crash!!

I am trying to configure mpd (music player daemon) to access my music files that are stored on a windows server (NAS).
In the mpd configuration file I have to point to the directory in which the music is.
How do I do that? Is it something to do with mount?

I've just installed Debian Squeeze on my eeePC 4G with the NetInstall iso and I plan on having the OS in text mode only (Ok, I'm not sure how strange that sounds to some of you). So I'm looking for command line apps to run and was wondering if there was one that would make this any easier...?ifconfig wlan0 upiwconfig wlan0 essid $essidNamedhclient wlan0I could just turn it into a script, but it still wouldn't handle hotspots with passwords. So, anyone know of a nice little app that would take care of this?

I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.

I have a CentOS dedicated server running ProFTP. I have created user accounts which are meant for FTP access only but the users cannot connect to the FTP unless their shell access is /bin/bash
Here is an example line that is outputted when I use this command:
This user can access the FTP fine, but he can also access SSH which I don't want to allow him to do. If I set his shell access to /bin/false then he can't connect to the FTP.
What can I use in instead of /bin/bash to allow FTP but don't allow SSH?

I have used linux for a web server but only installed a couple items on top of the OS but would like to begin using linux more often on my own home machine. However, I also like to keep things clean and organized, and know what is going on when I do something. I have some sample C scripts for network programming, and they came as a downloadable package with a readme including the make / configure instructions to get it all set up, and then I can compile individual scripts as needed.
I was wondering - when I run make and those first few commands - where does it all go? Will all the new activity be confined to the folder I am in, meaning I can easily remove it all by simply deleting the folder when I am done (I won't want all this sample networking stuff forever, you know). Or, does it get placed into other directories throughout the file system?
I know when installing some apps that the files are placed in directories such as usr/bin and the like - my assumption is this happens when running make and make install commands - if so, how do we get rid of them when finished?
I just want to keep the system somewhat clean if possible, and the very least like to know what is being installed and to where - and have the option to remove it easily at a later date if I choose to do so.

I'm a fairly nocturnal creature by nature, but life requires me to spend more time during the bright hours of day. I also have a visual impairment which makes it that my eyes take a very long time to adjust to darker situations. I need to be able to easily dim my screen so that using my computer doesn't keep me awake as much and doesn't prevent me from doing other stuff.
I will accept both a hotkey based solution "like on most laptop" as a timed one. My main monitor lacks simple brightness/contrast controls. f.lux doesn't suit my needs, since it only changes the screen's color temperature. I'd like the solution to work regardless of the make and model of the video card involved. Wearing sunglasses is impractical, since they make it hard to interact with objects around my computer.

I am using tcp for data transmission between 2pcs running linux.During transmission, I have noticed that if I unplug the network cable and reinsert it quickly, connection is not lost(same as i expect)and the sender start to resend the packet after 5s(what i expect is that network packets sent immediately after quick physical disconnect and reconnect). My question is can i reduce 5s to 0s(resend immediately after network cable reconnect)?Any parameters(tcp rto,txqueuelength,..) can be modified to achieve this condition?

I had mt-daapd working fine and was able to stream music from my Fedora 12 box and access it via Itunes 9 on Mac OS X until I edited my /etc/fstab file, so that the Windows vista partition (where my mp3 files reside) would auto map so I would not have to authenticate to map the NTFS drive each time I logged in, the NTFS mount directory is set to /mnt/windows and updated this in /etc/mt-daapd.conf now when I access the Daap share using Itunes 9 via Mac OS X the list of songs loads and I can select the song but it never plays and when I connect to the Daap share using Banshee an X appears next to the song.

I fully intend to use Ubuntu One, Amazon, or another music store to purchase music from now on, but the problem is that I still have $11+ in my iTunes account and I don't feel like letting it go to waste. So my question is, is there any way I can use the iTunes Store on Ubuntu? I looked at PyMusique, but it no longer works with iTunes, as well as many other things. Would it be possible to install an older version of iTunes that worked with WINE and use the store from there?

How can I have mediatomb access my music and video folders? When I attempt to access "Music" for example, going through /home, I receive this error:
"Error: could not list directory /home/samwise : Permission denied"
Is there a way to give permission to mediatomb to access them? Or is there a way to access them another route because they are shared?

I've been doing a bit of tweaking, exploring, damaging the system *But making backups for those occasions... They weren't on purpose, I was just trying figure out how they work* Okay, so... How can I get rid of all the XFCE and GNOME packages? Is there a list of all the packages that I can remove? I don't like how minimal XFCE looks and GNOME3 is OKAY, but not my cup of tea, and KDE4.6 with classic toolbar looks pretty cool.
To clarify, I want to remove ALL XFCE and GNOME packages so I can just have a clean KDE environment without non-working and redundant packages.

I'm dual booting Mac and Fedora 11. My music is on the mac side, and is too large to copy to the Fedora partition. What is the best option for sharing between the two partitions.
I used to copy the itunes folder to public, but that allows anyone access.
What's the best way to do this without allowing complete access?

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).
