As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user. However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory. Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.

General :: Give User Access To Directory In Another User's Home

Mar 8, 2010

I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.

I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.

General :: Users Cannot Connect To The FTP Unless Their Shell Access Is /bin/bash

Oct 4, 2009

I have a CentOS dedicated server running ProFTP. I have created user accounts which are meant for FTP access only but the users cannot connect to the FTP unless their shell access is /bin/bash

Here is an example line that is outputted when I use this command:

This user can access the FTP fine, but he can also access SSH which I don't want to allow him to do. If I set his shell access to /bin/false then he can't connect to the FTP.

What can I use in instead of /bin/bash to allow FTP but don't allow SSH?

General :: Bourne Shell Input From File Using - Then Return Control To User?

May 5, 2011

I have a program that I run from the terminal that requires manual input (it's matlab in mex debugging mode, matlab -Dgdb, which starts the GNU C debugger with its own custom settings).

Every time I run this program I always type in the same few commands in the program's interactive shell before I actually start working (for example: run -nojvm; stop at mexFunction; continue). I want to avoid typing these commands and I thought I could do this with shell scripting, saving the commands in the mycommands file, then running: myprogram < mycommands

The problem is that this runs all the commands and then exits the program. I want it to run the commands and return control to me so I can run my commands. Is there a way to tell the shell to use a file or a string as the input to a program then immediately return control to the user without the exiting the program?

General :: Disable - Non-root Shell Command To Find If A User Account Is Enabled Or Not?

Aug 10, 2011

Is there a non-root shell command that can tell me if a user's account is disabled or not? note that there is a fine distinction between LOCKING and DISABLED:

LOCKING is where you prepend ! or * or !! to the password field of the /etc/passwd file. On Linux systems that shadow the passwords, this marker flag may be placed in /etc/shadow instead of /etc/passwd. Password locking can be done (at a shell prompt) via password -l username (as root) to lock the account of username, and the use of the option -u will unlock it.

DISABLING an account is done by setting the expiration time of the user account to some point in the past. This can be done with chage -E 0 username, which sets the expiration date to 0 days after the Unix epoch. Setting it to -1 will disable the use of the expiration date.

The effect of locking to to prevent the login process from using a supplied password to hash correctly against the saved hash (by virtue of the fact that the pre-pended marker character(s) are not valid output character(s) for the hash, thus no possible input can ever be used to generate a hash that would match it). The effect of disabling is to prevent any process from using an account because the expiration date of the account has already passed. For my situation, the use of locking is not sufficient because a user might still be able to login, e.g. using ssh authentication tokens, and processes under that user can still spawn other processes. Thus, we have accounts that are enabled or disabled, not just locked. We already know how to disable and enable the account - it requires root access and the use of chage, as shown above. To repeat my question: is there a shell command which can be run without root privileges which can output the status of this account expiration info for a given user? this is intended for use on a Red Hat Enterprise 5.4 system. The output is being returned to a java process which can then parse the output as needed, or make use of the return code.

General :: Create An SSH User Which Can Access Only Certain Directory ?

Jun 18, 2011

I have a Virtual Private Server which I can connect to using SSH with my root account, being able to execute any linux command and access all the disk area, obviously.

I would like to create another user account, which would be able to access this server using SSH too, but only to a certain directory, for example /var/www/example.com/

For example, imagine this user has a HUGE error.log file (500 MB) located in /var/www/example.com/logs/error.log

When accessing this file using FTP, this user needs to download 500 MB to view the last lines of the log, but I'd like him to be able to execute something like this:

Therefore I need him to be able to access the server using SSH, but I don't want to grant him access to all server areas.

How would that work when all of the users are network users(openldap)? So these are not local accounts.
