View 6 RepliesAfter having been a Gnome user since initial release in 1999, I have now upgraded to Gnome3. I figured despite everyone's moaning, over 10 years of a successful desktop means I should give it a fair go.
One thing: If I have a music player such as Rhythmbox open, how can I change track without breaking my current task focus and heading to "Activities" now that the notification area icon is no more? I change track alot, do I really want to change windows to do it?
I'm looking to make a launching script which launches a program in one of the current directories that the user has open, the problem is I have no idea how to get info about all of the terminals open.I simply want to check which directories the user has open and do a pwd on the terminals, and then use that to cd into the dir before launching. I might be able to use a combo of who, tty, top, and pwd...but I don't know where to go.

Consider that I am building my application in Linux shell using make command but somehow the build fails. Is there any way I can find out that the build has failed (of course looking at shell for error messages will do the job for me but I don't want that). Is there any flag make or shell will set/reset if such failure occurs ?

Perhaps there is something on the net about this, however I couldn't find the correct keywords (and there are many other but similar problems) and didn't find anything. You know that when logging in, if you enter a wrong password, you'll have to wait a few seconds before giving it another try to avoid bruteforcing. However, when I enter the correct password in 11.04, it makes me wait a few seconds and then loads my desktop (fluxbox in my case, but the same problem remains in Unity).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 11.04 on two machines; older dell desktop and an acer laptop. I have loaded quick synergy on both but can't get it to work. I have followed the install guides using proper server/client names in appropriate boxes etc. Removed and re-installed and still no luck. One question does multiple work spaces which seems to be a default setting interfere with quick synergy? Maybe there is an easy explanation to this problem but I haven't found one so far and have been searching the net for a couple of days.

I want to resolve this without using up all of my CD's. When I try to burn the ISO it shows 39.5 MB of free space on the disc when this is a brand new CD-R with 700 MB of free space. When I look at the newly burned disc it looks like Ubuntu Server is on the CD
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

But I was out the other day with a mate and he had got his Macbook and I quite liked the Bottom of the screen quick launch bar they have. Is there a program or widget I can install to KDE 4.4.4. So I can have a Mac style quick launch bar? And hopefully something that wont use to many system resources.

View 14 Replies View RelatedLaunchy is a great piece of software, I use it on Windows mainly for quickly accessing folders. I love its auto-indexing in the background, and hardly ever browse through folders manually these days, solves me lots of time.
On Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), I usually "live" in the terminal, however. Therefore, Launchy on Linux (or Gnome Do, or its other replacements) are not what I need - as it opens the file manager, and I don't need the file manager.
What I do need is something that indexes my folders and lets me cd into them quickly in the terminal. For example:
It has been a long time i dreamed to get ubuntu and now i have my ubuntu 10.04 installed. I found similar posts in the forum but no one helped me out. i have a webcam Logitech quick cam pro 9000 and i tried to use it with skype 2.1 beta 2 i installed this morning. Well i can see the video but the microphone (build in the webcam ) does not work at all and it worked fine with windows. This is the lsusb command in the terminal :

Is there a quick and easy way to install 32-bit software on my 64-bit Fedora 11 machine? I've got some software that is 32-bit but can't use them because I lack those library files etc. needed to run them. View 2 Replies View RelatedAssume that I've got a folder called "Stuffs". So in fedora 15 you don't have a desktop folder, I mean you can't use it like we were used to. Even if you activate the option that allows you to use the "desktop", it is very uncomfortable because you can't minimize windows quickly. So my question is: Is there a way of put a "Link" in the overview, so I can get in to the overview and write "Stuffs" in the search bar and get my "Stuffs" folder open ?

So, anyone know of a nice little app that would take care of this?
