Dec 6, 2010Well, i guess it is the graphic card:
I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)

Feb 28, 2011I had an old thinkpad x61s laptop running ubuntu 10.10 with an intel gm965 graphics card. When i checked the monitor today it says the refreshing rate is 50hz and there is no other option available. I vaguely remember it used to be working at 60hz when I was running xp, so I googled and searched the forum for answers but came with no luck. Some people reported a similar problem with their nvidia graphic card and they seems to be able to modify a xorg.conf file to manually solve the issue (sadly I don't know how).

Feb 14, 2011I installed ubuntu but when I first tried to login with my correct passwords it goes in a loop and prompt me to log in again. I went to recovery mode and selected safe mode then I was able to log in without any further prompts. As a result of what happened, I unlocked the login screen and changed the setup to allow me to log in automatically and in safe mode only. I am now stuck to login in safe mode only. I tried to unlock the login screen to change to default but no chance. If there is no graphic card in the PC would that have an effect on memory or login?

Oct 11, 2010I've already got two installs without much problems.. one on my laptop and another fedora13 install on an older comp just to test it a bit before installing it on my main comp. But now I've got a problem. Both those install went without problems but when I started installation on my main comp first I've noticed some graphic problems when there is installation started and there is mouse and fedora 13 welcome installation screen. there are some like glitches or something no idea how to describe them.. like bad pixels in small upper part of the screen. But ignoring that everything went OK up to the part where I can choose a standard discs or non starts like sans and stuff..
When I choose standard disc installation just freeze there. No idea what is happening. Only this that came across my mind is that there is a problem with raid maybe? There are 2x640Gb HDD in raid0, there is win7 installed, and another 1Tb HDD, non-raid member disk, where I would like to install Fedora and have a dual boot. Still got programs that I need win for I'm afraid. Installation went smooth on laptop and another comp but there is no raid so I'm guessing that could be a problem. Aug 1, 2010I am trying to install lucid lynx on this laptop [URL] and I am getting the blank screen problem at installation. I tried nomodeset, vga=771, xforcevesa and a couple more and nothing seems to work. I have a livecd I burned a couple months ago. If I delete the quiet splash line at the livecd I get some repeating text too fast to see and after a couple of mins the laptop shuts off by itself. what can I do to get lucid lynx working on this pc?

Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.
I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects. After clicking "My computer" icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)
Can anyone tell me 'Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA'? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly. Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled.

I know that DP is required to use three monitors on a regular card. But other than that, will it work? Am I to expect a lot of work to be able to get it working? Or will it simply be impossible? (And yes, I know that AMDs(/ATI) drivers aren't always the best... Although changing to a card from nvidia at this moment isn't possible)

Jun 5, 2011I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

I had to go to bed so I changed the sleep timer on the laptop to 2 hours, the time it would have taken the upgrade to complete. I woke up and the laptop was off, now only the grub menu shows up and the laptop won't boot. I tried doing this: - When the machine boots up, press Esc to get to the Grub menu - Select one of the recovery mode options. This will boot you up to a single-user root prompt. - Run sudo fdisk /dev/sda (this assumes that your hard drive is at sda) - Type p to see which hard drive partition is labeled Linux swap. Xrender instead work but it's slow. Whit opensuse 11.2 all was ok. glxgears however shows me pretty good performance so I don't understand where is the problem.
