Aug 9, 2010
I have failed to install the Ubuntu recommended driver many times. It's been pointed out that i have a build error in my make.log, (See att) but i don't know what the implications are?
it's my first day of trying to figure out Linux, and I now understand why it's been largely used by the geek community.I've tried to install both xcdroast and 7zip using the console and failed miserably both times.7zip doesn't have a ./configure and xcdroast just gives me errors that I don't understandI think I need a package manager?
this is my first thread. Just installed Desktop Kubuntu Natty 11.04 x86_64 and have been amazed by its possibilities. I would like though to install a second OS which is free-ware and unlike Kubuntu but as powerful and userfriendly. Would anyone recommend the followinf?
My Broadcom STA wireless driver has failed to installed. The error report says that "PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THE LOG FILE FOR DETAILS: /var/log/jockey.log WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO GET THE WIRELESS STA driver functional.? Gotta see it functiioning back!
I (somewhat foolishly) decided to reformat windows XP and make my foray in the Ubuntu world with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid just last week. It has treated me fairly well so far and with the help of others posts have been able to get most everything setup to my liking. However...My Problem:I tried to install the ATI drivers for my radeon 9700 using ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.run. I tried to install it using the Ubuntu/9.04 settings, hoping that I could get it to work like that and I was quite wrong. When I restarted my computer I was started in simple graphics mode, and now I'm trying to set things right again.'ve un-installed the fglrx drivers (I think...) and now I'm stuck. Play On Linux tells me that I need to install 3D acceleration, something I know my graphics card has..

I am attempting to install the Linuxant ALSA driver to make my sound work properly (speakers muting when headphones plugged in). This worked on Lucid, but on Maverick the installation fails at the "building modules" stage. It directs me to a logfile, which I have reproduced here:
The package partially installed I have no sound at all. I have kernel headers and every related -dev package I can think of installed. I'm running 64-bit; could that be an issue?
tried to install drivers for FX 5500 today, the one that Ubuntu recommended (173) and the current version (260). Both installs failed when it tried to set up python-support. Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.
I need to install b43 driver for my bcm4315 wifi card. I'm trying to manually connect my wireless adapter to my router using WPA. I'm using Madwifi drivers for my D-Link DWL-G630. I keep getting the same error " Association request to the driver failed". I can connect to my router using wep through the GUI. I can not connect using the terminal. I created my /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file
Problem: rsync to NAS gives 'rsync: failed to set times on "/media/NAS": Operation not permitted (1)'
Efforts to date.
1.Initial set up was ubuntu 10.04 on stock DNS 323 NAS. Grsync would copy file names and folders to NAS but they all were 0 bytes and no data.
2.Set up FFP on NAS, installed rsync server on NAS, and retried. Grsync now copies all the files and folders, but get the 'rsync: failed to set times on "/media/NAS": Operation not permitted (1)'
3.Grsync with -t removed (does not preserve time) works without error message, but does not keep time/date on NAS backup.
System: F15-64bit, Intel Core i7 on Asus P6T mobo. I've upgraded to 2.6.40, and I'm regretting it!While 2.6.38 still works fine (apart from the usual random panics), 2.6.40 gives errors on boot, and reliably panics soon after login. Early in the boot I get the message "IOMMU: mapping reserved region failed" 8 times. Then boot appears to proceed as normal, at least once the nvidia blob is removed in favour of Nouveau (otherwise, forget it...).
After graphical login, the system freezes within a couple of minutes. After a text login, the system freezes within seconds with a panic, starting "BUG: Scheduling while atomic: swapper". A forum search for the IOMMU message leads to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Commo...IOMMU_handling but this talks about old 32-bit releases without BIOS virtualization support.
I'm new to linux hence would like to know if there are any books that can be helpful in understanding linux from the scratch. Any suggestions would be greatful.

I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase. For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.
I am wondering if you can play Runescape on Puppy Linux(Slackware) with Java, Flash, and the plug-ins are all installed, and i use a Live Usb. Is this possible? Recommended Requirements(and please don't write the bare minimum)
I`am trying to install drivers for a very old graphics card GeForce2 GTS/Pro on Suse 11.2. I downloaded driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.13-pkg1.run and install it successfully. But when I launch "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" it crushes with error "isax: could not import file: /var/cache/sax/files/config at /usr/sbin/isax line 199"

I have an Compaq Mini 700 which has a busted hard drive. I'm trying to get Ubuntu onto a USB disc to use the internet. I have tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Desktop and neither will connect wirelessly. A wireless icon appears with an ! indicating a problem. When going into Hardware Drivers there are 2: Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver - neither are activated. Trying to activate the first results in an instant error: "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log". The second goes through the process of installing and results in an error. When trying to install anything it all results in some kind of error. How can I get the wireless card working? I believe it is a broadcom.
I have just run a fresh install of Kubuntu on an old PC to try it out for a few weeks. The Boot CD works fine and there is a GUI for the install. It seems to detect all the devices without a hitch. But when the PC reboots it boots into command line. When I try to run startx it gives me "AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0"I looked up the x.org website and in the FAQ Here it says "This kind of problem typically occurs when you're using a big monitor with an old graphics card. You can solve it by deleting some of the highest resolutions of the deepest colour mode in the Screen section of your xorg.conf, or even the whole last Display subsection."I am using an old pc with old graphics card with a 25inch HP LP2465 monitor. in my /etc/X11 there is only a xorg.cof.failsafe file. anyone any ideas on how to do this. The full error is attached in a very bad screenshot.
I don't know why, but when i first boot openSUSE at the morning in my Aspire it hangs over and over again. I don't know why is this, but the gecko appear, the white bar appear, and moves 1cm, and then, puff no more blinking from the hard drive. Then i force te reboot, over and over until works. The message is: acerhdf: no Aspire One hardware foundWhen i first installed the mini with openSUSE it works perfect for a week, and then start this problem.I have tried with different kernel flavors (like desktop) and still nothing.
I'v downloaded the new versions of suse many times. I average 3 to 4+ times before it's successful, bad downloads(bad checksum) or download stops for no reason. I'v used direct link and bittorrent. Bittorrent takes 2-3 times as long. So, I usually use direct link. I can do the download in about 6-8 hours. The first time, it stopped at 334 megs, using direct link. Using bittorrent, it took about 16 hours. I got a bad checksum. Is there a way I fix the file without downloading it again? Suse 10.4
