General :: Install Both Xcdroast And 7zip Using The Console And Failed Miserably Both Times?

Jun 6, 2011

it's my first day of trying to figure out Linux, and I now understand why it's been largely used by the geek community.I've tried to install both xcdroast and 7zip using the console and failed miserably both times.7zip doesn't have a ./configure and xcdroast just gives me errors that I don't understandI think I need a package manager?

General :: Trying To Install Xcdroast

Jun 6, 2011

I'm using Slackware.I'm operating from a terminal window inside of KDE, so let me know if that changes anything.Here are the commands I've gone through to try to install XCDRoast:

$ tar xvf xcdroast.tar.gz
$ cd xcdroast-.0.98alpha16

I opened the file using nano INSTALL and looked for any reference to gdk_pixbuf but found none.I have no idea what to do from here, and the only other people I could find that seemed to have the same problem were well above what I know how to do.

Needless to say, my Linux kernel is now wasted. what is the best way to proceed? I would like to get theOS going again, without losing any of my data or files. I also have a Windoze partition on that HD, which needs to be preserved.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Latest Qbittorrent, Failing Miserably?

Aug 11, 2011

I really like qBittorrent.I would really love it if it worked in the unity desktop.There's a few issues with this--

1. No icon in system tray.

2. No access to latest version in software center.

I've looked around in the forums and tried to "whitelist" all apps--I don't know what that means and don't personally understand why ALL apps weren't whitelisted in the first place.That was unsuccessful.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Running On Samsung Q1EX - Working Configuration - Failed To Get Textmode Console

Sep 4, 2010

I needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.

Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). Note also to choose PS/2 when executing the setup.sh script provided in their download. eGalax_eMPIA Technology Inc. TouchKit Linux Driver Here is my xorg.conf now:

Section "ServerLayout"
InputDevice "EETI" "SendCoreEvents"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....

On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!

Programming :: Regarding 7zip And Archivers In General?

Jan 26, 2011

Its much better to use the good archiver such as rar, 7zip on uncompressed files (and not after crappy zip for eg. ).People often compress .iso files and similar that contain .cab archives.So, compression ratio would be much better if those .cab files were first uncompressed and then rar-ed/7zip-ed.I know it would be difficult, and dearchiver would need to re-compress to make .cab again (so it would have to include M$ algorithm and unpacking would take a lot of time) but its possible?

Ubuntu :: OpenOffice Works Miserably In 10.04

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and many applications have changed, including the OpenOffice suite. Unfortunately, the new OpenOffice Wordprocessor is almost unusable. ODT files open slowly (DOC files are almost better!), and the laptop (T5470 Core2Duo!) seems overwhelmed by this application. I cannot format the text, I cannot zoom, it is real madness. I dont understand why. The previous version was OK. Is there any advice? Could I uninstall this version of OpenOffice (3.2) and return to the older one I used in Ubuntu 8.04?

Fedora :: Get The Message "IOMMU: Mapping Reserved Region Failed" 8 Times

Aug 4, 2011

System: F15-64bit, Intel Core i7 on Asus P6T mobo. I've upgraded to 2.6.40, and I'm regretting it!While 2.6.38 still works fine (apart from the usual random panics), 2.6.40 gives errors on boot, and reliably panics soon after login. Early in the boot I get the message "IOMMU: mapping reserved region failed" 8 times. Then boot appears to proceed as normal, at least once the nvidia blob is removed in favour of Nouveau (otherwise, forget it...).

After graphical login, the system freezes within a couple of minutes.After a text login, the system freezes within seconds with a panic, starting "BUG: Scheduling while atomic: swapper". A forum search for the IOMMU message leads to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Commo...IOMMU_handling but this talks about old 32-bit releases without BIOS virtualization support.

Ubuntu :: Rsync: Failed To Set Times On "/media/NAS":

May 16, 2011

Problem: rsync to NAS gives 'rsync: failed to set times on "/media/NAS": Operation not permitted (1)'

Efforts to date.

1.Initial set up was ubuntu 10.04 on stock DNS 323 NAS. Grsync would copy file names and folders to NAS but they all were 0 bytes and no data.

2.Set up FFP on NAS, installed rsync server on NAS, and retried. Grsync now copies all the files and folders,but get the 'rsync: failed to set times on "/media/NAS": Operation not permitted (1)'

3.Grsync with -t removed (does not preserve time) works without error message, but does not keep time/date on NAS backup.

Setup: NAS is automounted with CIFS:

//192.168.1.999/NAS/ /media/NAS cifs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=07 77 0 0

Reading at length seems to reveal that this issue is a permission problem. So my question is:

1.Is there a simple edit to my fstab file that would give me permission to save time/owner to my NAS?

2.Would I be able to use chown to modify the folder on my NAS to own it? ***if so -> syntax to use chown on a network drive.

3.Do I need to edit my NAS rsync server to solve this?

4.I have a 1 gig network/cards, my speeds are 4mb/sec. Is this a good speed for this type of network, or is this a bug of CiFS networks?

OpenSUSE :: Errors Trying To Use Zypper (from Console) - GConf Error: Failed To Contact Configuration Server

Jun 30, 2011

i been getting errors when trying to use zypper from the console. This happens in 2 pcs, and errors seem to be the same,One has 11.4 + gnome 2, standar installation (with gnome) from 11.4 DVD. The error i get whenever i run something like zypper install xxxyyy.rpm or zypper update is:

GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)

the other one, 11.4 with gnome 3 (clean install from live dvd):

GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)

I dont know if its related, but the one with gnome 3 constantly gives me (what i think is) a kernel panic when i shut down the system, it happens fast and the text on the screen is not "linear" but spread all over the screen, so i cant read the whole message, but it does say something about glib and corruption.This is actually the first time(s) ibe seen a kernel panic ever since i used ubuntu.

General :: "can't Find Specified Sfx Module" When Trying To Create Self Extracting File With 7zip

Oct 19, 2010

I am trying to create a self extracting file for Windows from Ubuntu 10.04 using 7zip.

I tried these commands:

7zr -sfx7z.sfx a output.exe *.txt
7zr -sfx/usr/local/etc/7z.sfx a output.exe *.txt

Both show this error:

Error: can't find specified sfx module

System error: E_FAIL

I have all the .sfx modules on /home/username/.sfx/ because I use them previously with "rar" and it worked fine, but it's not working for 7zip. I also copied 7z.sfx to /usr/local/etc/ to test the second command like shown here but I get the same error.

OpenSUSE :: 7zip Doesn't Use The Full Power Of The Cpu?

Oct 24, 2010

i'm curently compressing a big 100GB file with 7zip on a system with an intel 2,66Ghz quadcore processor. Allthough 7zip uses 4 cores to compress the file, it still uses only about 40% of the cpu performance. The cpu isn't doing anything else, nothing heavy anyway.

I started compressing 8 hours ago and the compression is currently 47% done. Reading and writing the files isn't very fast so my harddrive isn't slowing the process down.

So what's the holdup? There is still 53% of work to be done. Is it for some reason impossible to do this faster?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Find 7Zip In Order To Unzip New Downloads

Aug 7, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx
Dual Boot with Windwos Vista
Level - beginner (started today 07/0810)

I have just given Linux a try for the first time and so far its not proving to be a good experience. I have so far just tried to install a couple of basic programs I am familiar with and ones suggested by Lifehacker.I wanted to install Tweetdeck, which meant installing Adobe Air. I duly downloaded Adobe Air but it then says I need to choose an application to open it. Assuming that the bin file was a zip file I looked in the software centre and found 7zip. Told it to load that but then couldn't find where it was. Its not listed in the Applications drop down (top right) so I found 'search for a file' and entered *7zip* to be shown 5 files. All but one appear to be a form of image file the other (7zip.desktop) isn't an exe either. Double clicking on it just gets me the following in something called gedit.

Name=7zip
Comment=7zip compression/uncompression tool
Terminal=false
Type=Application

[code].....

I then gave up and used google to find the program and download it, but just came across the same problem. Why oh why is there not some default program already loaded for unzipping files? How can I find 7Zip (I have already looked in the bin folder on the system drive but nothing there) and run it to tell it to make itself the default for unzipping files?
