Server :: Administer Wordpress From Different Host On Same LAN?
Feb 7, 2011
I have a web server with LAMP and wordpress on it. I'm going to administer wordpress from a different host on the same LAN as the server (the server doesn't have X and desktop software on it). When you build a site, with wordpress, from a separate admin host what exactly is happening?. Do browser requests from the admin host go to the web server, then out to the Internet, then back to the web server, then the results get displayed back to the browser on the admin host?. Or does it work differently?. Will such a set up work automatically after the installation and basic configuration of LAMP and wordpress on the web server?.

I'm trying to get wordpress to work with lighttpd and my home test server... <name>.dnsalias.org as my IP is not static... When I install wordpress ( via apt-get ) and set it up through install script like this:
bash /usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress <name>.dnsalias.org It is accessible from outside of my network but not from local one where the sever ip is 10.0.0.200 From outside it is using correctly domain <name>.dnsalias.org but from inside when I try to use ip 10.0.0.200 from other pc on net it will not work..a s it still using <name>.dnsalias.org in all links... Also I would like to have it in <name>.dnsalias.org/wordpress as I have another test site in <name>.dnsalias.org/<test_Site> which by thee way works from inside and outside of my network.... its just wordpress ...
I have followed this guide: [URL] but its for apache... I spend whole night searching for some solution and now I'm dead tired and you are my last hope ...( ....Obi Wan Kenobi ) So does someone running wordpress in setup like I described above, if yes

I have Ubuntu 10.4 Server, it's a local intranet server in back of a router in a "standard" home network. As I understand it laptops, PCs and the server are "hidden" from direct contact with the internet by Network Address Translation [NAT]. The router is a Linksys WRT54G all clients are connected to it, and the router itself is connected to a modem provided by the ISP. The server was given a static IP address. To admin the server I connect from a local client with SSH and get a command-line.
Is there a way to admin the server if I am a thousand miles away from this local network? Putting it another way, Is there a way to "tunnel" through to the server, give the user/pw and get a command-line from the internet? What software or hardware is needed?

I have setup postfix and postfixadmin on a CentOS 5.5 server and the install appears to be ready to go. I have never used postfix and postfixadmin and I am having a hard time finding any documentation on how to setup and administer the postfix server with Postfixadmin. This is simply a test and alerting server and will not be hosting user mailboxes. I am only looking for the basics I am not going to need to setup anything complex

I just installed Webmin on this CentOS 5.5 client and would like to know if it's possible to remotely administer the Squid server. The one I'm using for webmin is different from the one where Squid proxy is running.
How do you set it up and where in Webmin?

I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).
During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response. Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.

I host a number of sites and recently migrated to a new server (both old and new are running Ubuntu 10.04 [I only upgrade my web server when there is a new LTS release]). After the migration, Wordpress is asking for ftp credentials to update plugins, which it never used to do. I'm certain this is user/group/permissions related, but because of the new setup, I'm not sure what these should be set to.
On the previous server, each site was a subdirectory of /var/www/ and everything was owned by www-data. This wasn't the best setup, since it meant my users didn't have direct access to their own sites. In the new setup, each page I host is in /home/username/www/. Consequently, all the files are owned by 'username'.
My guess is that Wordpress' request for ftp credentials stems from a conflict between the apache2 user and the usernames that own the sites. Is this accurate? If so, how do I rectify this?

I have question regarding setting permissions on wp-content/uploads... in wordpres. I read a tutorial where they want you to set permissions: chown -R julie.julie uploads/ chmod -R 777 uploads/ 777 makes it rwx for others as well. It's not secure! It works but is temporary fix. How I can make sure that the user julie (wordpress) will be able to write to it but anybody else wont.

I have a blog on my site and am using htaccess rewrite rules to block all those nasty scripts from trying to execute various things mostly relating to phpmyadmin and wordpress. This has reduced my httpd error logs to less than half from before.
Am trying to come up with a rule to rewrite all calls to certain files if they are not originating from my domain, here is how it looks right now but it's not working as I can see scripts trying to hit "wp-comments-post.php" getting a 500 Internal Server Error.

I've recently started setting up a new wordpress install on a new dedicated server. The system is installed on a linux debian 5 setup and running on apache.Having only ever run shared hosting before this setup is a much bigger leap than expected, but after a couple of weeks doing bits here and there I've finally got the setup running, and all appears ok.My issue is as follows:On the server the default owner of all the installed folders is "root"In order to allow media uploads, plugin installs and upgrades and wordpress auto-upgrades I've had to Chown the owner of the entire wordpress directory to the server as follows:Chown -R www-data:www-data /usr/share/wordpress/
Can anyone tell me if this is actually secure? (clearly if the server is compromised the folder would be writeable!) If not would I be better changing the owner back to root (or even creating a new user for the wordpress folder?), then chown just the uploads, theme, and blogs.dir folders to allow media uploads, upgrades, etc from with the wordpress, and then only chown the entire wordpress install when upgrading or installing new plugins, themes, etc.?Just a bit lost when it comes to the ownership of these folders as changing these ownerships is the only way i can get the system functioning 'correctly'

Main purpose of this LAMP server is testing development. I would like to get this server setup up almost exactly to a T how my real web hosting server is setup. I am running 11.04 and have installed LAMP. I also installed vsftpd. I went ahead and made a symlink from /home/user/public_html to /var/www/. I login from a Windows 7 computer via CuteFTP to my Ubuntu server. I can enter the public_html directory and can create folders but the default permissions for any folder created is 700. I have tried running chmod -R 755 /home/user/public_html but this does not work. Every file or folder created now currently will take a 700 permission.
How do I make it so anything that is uploaded into this folder will be at either 755 or 775? Also what is the best practice for utilizing the /var/www directory? Should I be using a symlink to link it to my user's home folder? I have read through so many posts with regards to adding users to a group and giving this group permission and this or that I'm so confused.

I have VPS installed with Debian, NGINX, mysql, php and wordpress. By default the template gives 1 wordpress install in the /var/www/ directory. However, now I want to add more domains with wordpress to that VPS. I created a directory called /home/public_html/domain1.com and linked it to the /var/www/ directory. then I created another directory called /home/public_html/domain2.com and uploaded wordpress there. What I did next was edit my /etc/nginx/nginx.conf file with the following code:
Code:
user www-data www-data;
worker_processes 4;

I'm trying to set up my web server (nginx) as a catchall virtual host, as per an example that can be seen here: [URL].. (It's the Wildcard Subdomains in a Parent Folder example). Now, here's my issue. I use Wordpress on the coburndomain.org domain. I have pretty URLs enabled, that make my Wordpress articles look like this:[URL].. I followed this tutorial to do so: [URl].. , but I'm not sure how to apply it to my setup. Here's my configuration files from Debian Squeeze with Nginx onboard:

Bit of an odd one, this. I've migrated a website from my old server to a new machine. Both servers run Ubuntu + Apache2. Both only serve a single site, apart from the default site.I've flipped the domain name to the new IP address. The trouble is that after moving the virtual host config over into sites-available, with the necessary link in sites-enabled, Apache attempts to serve from the default web root (/var/www) rather than the actual site content (in /var/www/technology). So for example, an attempt to browse.

I have recently decided to venture into online blogging and other things, and my friend told me wordpress is a great tool for this. I have set up my mysql database, and apache and php are all working fine, and when i copy my wordpress folder into my /var/www/, and edit the config file for my database, i point my browser to[URL] to get it up and running. But i only get the error: "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /var/www/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 302". Some googleing seems to suggest that this may be a problem with a php.ini file, but im assuming this is a windows based solution, and im not sure where/what a linux alternative is.

When I go to my win7 machine it I can browse to the machine (called jira2) and see the folder called homes, but when I click on the folder it says Windows cannot access \JIRA2homes. if I expand the details it says Error code 0x80070035 I am running Ubuntu 10.04.

I am operating Debian 5.0 kernel 2.26. In trying to clean up (I believe I was using a root terminal), I erased the directory /home/root. Since I have done that, I can not get to a root terminal, can not use synapse and a host of other administrative processed.
Now, when I boot the system, I can log in as a user (my version of Debian does not allow me to login as the administrator). Then, logged in as the user, I previously could select for example 'synapse', I would be given a screen to enter the Administrator password and then get synapse. Now, I am given the screen to enter the Administrator password, but once I enter it, I do not get synapse. I do get an error message
'can not find /home/root/.synapse' And of course, I erased the /home/root directory. Now I might just mkdir /home/root - except to do that I need a root terminal and I can not get that either - probably for the same reason.
I have tried using the boot disk and going to the rescue mode - except for some reason I can not mount a root directory. I believe it is because I am using LVM2 and my root directory must be in an LVM volume, but I can not figure out how to get to that using the rescue mode.

I am trying to setup the most efficient way to remotely administer an ubuntu system. So far I was successful in setting up ssh. I have the server running and made sure it only uses keys to authenticate and changed the default port. I can connect to the ssh-server. This system is behind nat and bots trying to break-in when I forwarded the port. I used the AllowUsers option, which helped in knocking back these rouge connections. I was not comfortable leaving a port open all the time, so I set up logmein Hamachi VPN and closed the ports that were open on NAT.
Now I use Hamachi and am very impressed. I use VNC in VPN. But Vino is slow, I tested x11vnc and it was slightly faster. I also tried to set up freenx but nxsetup file was missing. some one posted that file in the forums and suggested copying to the system but I was not sure if I want to download a script from the forum and use it. So for the time being, I thought I will just concentrate on X11vnc until freenx is fixed.
I would like to create a separate desktop on the server and use it to access remotely. This way we will not have to fight over the cursor (sounds funny but very frustrating). From what I understand x11vnc has this function inbuilt (uses vncserver). I cannot get it to work! when using ssh, at the remote machine's command prompt, if I type "evince xyz.pdf", it does not launch the "xyz.pdf". what am I doing wrong? When using VNC, how can I change between different users on the remote machines? Right now I can only use VNC in one account that I first setup. When I try to change to another user, vnc client goes blank. How can I get as much control of the remote system as possible? Right now I need someone to switch on the remote system and login to their account before I can VNC. Can I use ekiga inside VPN, I use skype right now and it's sometimes terrible with dropouts. I looked around and someone suggested using ekiga as it works very well over lan. How do set up ekiga so that I have a direct connection with the remote system? Is there any client that just takes the IP address and creates a connection? Mumble seems to be the popular choice, it's most suited to LANparties, I just need a connection between two systems. I am trying to set this up to help users with hardly any computer knowledge to use the system without any issues.

I'm trying to rsync files and directories from a RedHat linux host(v 4.5 & 4.7) to a Windows server 2003R2 Standard Edition with cygwin running. I'm executing the rsync command from the cygwin shell. The transfer involves rsync'ing approximately 1 TB of data from the linux server to the windows server. After about 280+GB of data transfer, the transfer just dies.
There seems to be no particular file or directory that the transfer stops at. I'm able to rsync GB's of data from other linux hosts to this cygwin server with no problem. Files and directories rsync fine. The network infrastructure is essentially the same regardless of the server being rsync'ed in that it is GB Ethernet running through Cisco GB switches. There appear to be no glitches or hiccups across the network path.
I've asked the folks at rsync.samba.org if they know of any problems or issues. Their response has been neutral in that if the version of rsync that cygwin has ported is within standards then there is no rsync reason this problem should happen.I've asked the cygwin support site if they know of any issues and they have yet to reply. So, my question is whether the version of rsync that is ported to cygwin is standard. If so, is there any reason cygwin & rsync keep failing like this?
I've asked the local rsync on linux guru's and they can't see any reason this should fail from a linux perspective. Apparently I am our company cygwin knowledge base by default.

Just something that struck me while working on our virtual servers today.
I have bonded 3 NICs at the host in Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS. They are using mode 0 for Round-robin. Point is to increase the speed/performance of all the servers, but mainly the fileserver. The fileserver is a virtual server running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on VMware Server 2.0.
1) I noticed the NIC in the slave OS reported link speed as 1000 and Im unable to change it as the NIC (virtual one) doesnt support it. Does this not really matter, as the NIC doesnt exist, and it will run at higher speeds anyway? Or do I have to remove the bond on the host, bridge all 3 interfaces from the host to the slave OS, and then make a bond in the slave OS?
2) While at it, does mode 0 only increase performance on data being sent from the host or does it also increase the available incoming bandwidth?
