Ubuntu :: Installing Codecs And Setting Up System?

Jul 14, 2011

Our internet connection is not strong enough to handle the 4 GB DVD ISO download of Ubuntu 10 that contains all the codecs etc.

What would be the process required for me to install all the codecs needed for full multimedia support, as it is very annoying the fact it does not come with them pre loaded.

As well as installation of codecs, what other things would need to be done to ensure the system is fully set up.

Ubuntu :: Setting Up/installing 2 Different Firefox Browsers?

May 28, 2011

so I'm trying to run an extension for firefox that is no longer handled with firefox 4.0+. I've googled that you can run two different versions of firefox on the same system, but you have to have them set up as two different profiles. Basically having the two different browsers set up in two different locations running there own things from different files, etc.

How can I go about setting up an older version of firefox in a different location, instead of just running the setup in general which would conflict with my newer version?

I know it can be done, but a simple sudo apt-get install firefox (version x.x) will basically override my newer version I would imagine. I've already found where to get the older versions file and everything, I just don't want to mess up my new version

Can someone please help me as to how to install this in another location not affecting my current version? I also understand that I will have to have another command to run this older version, so maybe if you could shed some light on how to set up the new command also,

Ubuntu Networking :: Installing And Setting Up OpenSSH - Connection Reset

Feb 4, 2010

I am running Ubuntu (Karmic) and did the command: "sudo apt-get install ssh", In an attempt to download, install and setup OpenSSH. This installed both the client and server and during setup actually brought the daemon up and running as well. I then attempt: "ssh <myusername>@localhost" and it prompts me with a password. I enter the password, hit enter and immeditaly see the following results:

Read from remote host localhost: Connection reset by peer. Connection to localhost closed. I'm fairly certain that it is not on the client end as I can connect to other machines through ssh. I've tailed all the logs, messages, dmesg etc and nothing seems to be out of order, or even remotely related to shh or connections etc. My desktop machine had no (as in zero) issues installing and setting up OpenSSH, and connections can come and go as normal.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up SOHO Network - Installing Services For The Server Edition For 10.04

Oct 7, 2010

I have a good grasp on windows server 2003 but I don?t want to pay outrageous license fees for software and services and clients. I am newish to terminal as I only know a few commands. I have no problem installing services for the server edition for 10.04. Its just understanding whats going wrong to troubleshoot. I guess there is you guys and I have good working knowledge of Cisco's IOS's so I understand things like routing tables and interfaces and such for troubleshooting.

Questions I have... Can I install the desktop version of 10.04 and just install the server services? I was looking at the server guide [URL] and would like to know if these can all be installed on the desktop edition without too much trouble. I would imagine one could just use the server edition but I would really want a graphical user environment for some of the activities, if not all that I can. This would be becuase on my skills in the CLI. I priced out a server from Dell. I fits my budget perfectly if I go the Ubuntu 10.04 route. I was wondering if anyone sees any conflicts with the hardware for the Ubuntu OS....

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 As Dual Boot With Win7 / Stops After Setting Partition Size

May 5, 2011

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).

I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

Ubuntu Installation :: Setting Up FakeRAID On An Existing System?

Aug 12, 2010

I have 2 750GB harddrives with multiple NTFS and ext3 partitions and have just added two empty 1.5TB drives (with WD Advanced Format Technology) to the computer. I have several external drives of various capacities for temporary data storage. My final objective is to have two mirrored RAID arrays that I can access with both Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista (which I still need for applications that aren't supported by WINE), and I'm trying to find out how to do this.

At the moment, the 1.5TB disks are mirrored in the BIOS settings, and I was able to add a blank NTFS partition to the array using GParted. However, I am now unable to mount any of my partitions (other than the Ubuntu one) and cannot use GParted to copy a partition to the RAID array (I get a generic resource in use message, but I have no other applications open and am opening GParted after a fresh boot).

My Ubuntu install is heavily customized, so I would prefer not to reinstall it if at all possible. If it matters, the OS was not installed as 10.04, but was updated incrementally over time, starting at Hardy Heron. I initially did an apt-get install of dmraid and kpartx after reading [URL]

For some reason, my 750GB drives are recognized as belonging to a broken RAID array even though they are not set up that way in BIOS.

HD configuration:

sda: (I cannot mount any of these partitions )
1: ext3 (Debian Installation)
2: ntfs (Vista Installation)
3: ntfs (Data)

Im trying to set up a third domainname but every time I touch the files (httpd.conf, hosts, ddclient.conf, VirtualHosts, etc) it resolves to the primary domain name. The first two have been working for years, but whenever I try to set up the third one exactly like the other two using the thirds info, it will not resolve to that third domain?????

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting Up Receiver To Computer Sound System?

May 14, 2010

im about 3 weeks into linux, started out with fedora actually, but switched to ubuntu. First days of linux was intense but slowly got the hang of it and i enjoy it way better than my previous op vista.

Sound System Setup-
Sony Receiver 3 speakers and 1 subwoofer

From receiver Y connector -(red plug and white plug R/L) to audio plug that goes into laptop output. Laptop- AsusTek g51x with

PHP Code:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC663 Analog [ALC663 Analog]  Subdevices: 0/1  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC663 Digital [ALC663 Digital]  Subdevices: 1/1  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

PHP Code:

alsactl version 1.0.22

Sound card has Headphone, output, and input holes.

OS- Ubuntu 10.04

The setup worked fine on vista, but on ubuntu whenever i plug in headphones (headphone output) the laptops internal speakers shut off and there is no sound on the headphones, and when i plug in the sony receiver audio plug to my sound card output hole, the laptops speakers are still playing but no sound in the sony receiver. Also when i open the Ubuntu sound manager (I think its either pulseaudio or ASLA, stock gnome one) , it says on the Output tab, "Choose a device for sound output", but there is only one option and it says

"Internal audio analog stereo".

Im literally extremely lost at this point, i have read the forums for help, ASLA wiki (only shows USB sound device support) messed with the Sound Preferences, and spend around 9 hours in the last 2 days trying to make this work.

OpenSUSE :: Setting The System Back To Standard KDE 4.6.0?

Jun 15, 2011

over here on my desktop I have KDE 4.6.4 running, updated from 4.6.0 through all intermediate steps. In the last few days I feel, that it got a bit unstable and I think, I have messed it up again, with doing some stupid things in the repository management. But of course, I don´t remember what I did...

So I am asking myself, if I could reset the system to the state where it came from: KDE 4.6.0, including all the updates from the standard openSUSE repositories.

I would do it as follows:

1. deactivate the additional KDE repositories and X11 from OBS (I needed it for installing xbindkeys)

2. switch packages to the standard repositories, which came with openSUSE, and also switch the packages to Packman

3. run an update, or how it is called, the switch back to 4.6.0

would this work, or would I completly mess the system up?

I then would leave it like it is, with the only additional repo´s: Packman

Networking :: Setting Up An Email System And Accounts

I am in the process of setting up and e-mail system for my small business. In the past I have always had my ISP and my domain registrar handle the e-mail and just POP the e-mail to a ciient such as thunderbird. Now I have decided in order to better learn postfix or sendmail, I want to setup my own and administer it. My question is:

1 - Once I have my domain name for my company is the e-mail accounts just created via psotfix or sendmail or are the accounts created via my domain registrar like my domain name? For Example: my domain name is test.com and I wanted president@test.com.

2 - Are e-mail servers setup in a DMZ as realys and then forwarded to an internal e-mail server and them transmitted to the clients or are they normally just put inside the LAN?
