General :: DNS Forwarders Setup Not Working

Oct 29, 2010

I am trying to setup a DNS server; where any names that can't be resolved would be forwarded to another server. In my local server, in the named.conf file, under options; The 1.1.1.1 above should have resolution for any outside addresses like URL...However, when I tried to ping yahoo.com from one of my internal machines, I couldn't get to yahoo.com.

I have a named server that has forwarders setup. Quite often the dns server where I forward would not respond right away and the query would fail. It would then also cache the empty result for 3 hours and I would need to restart the service or clear the cache. how would I be able to specify a value for forwarders timeout, just like on Windows DNS.

General :: Ubuntu 10.04 - Cannot Setup GRUB On RAID 0 Setup Disks

Jun 4, 2010

I've been all afternoon trying to install Ubuntu Lucid on my fakeRAID 0 configured (2) HDDs and am unable to set GRUB up. The fake RAID setup is provided by Intel Matrix Storage Manager, it is correctly enabled and the BIOS is also correctly set up -- in fact, I've managed to install Windows 7 with no significant hitch. After struggling with partioning the drives (had to follow advice I found on a very helpful guide online [0]), creating the filesystems AND getting Ubuntu's installer to actually do what it is supposed to do, I now cannot seem to set GRUB up. My system, as it stands, is unbootable at all; via live CD only.

This is how the RAID0 dev is partitioned:
Code:
# fdisk -l /dev/mapper/isw_ecdeiihbfi_Volume0

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Install Killed Dual Monitors - Nvidia Setup Not Working ?

Sep 14, 2010

I've just installed 10.04 on an old system.

Hardware is:

- NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT video card
- Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R motherboard with 3 gig ram, few TB of hard-drive
- dual monitors, both viewsonic vx2235wm, primary on analog, secondary on digital (but whatever, happy to reverse the order)

On the old setup (8.04) the monitors were set up as twinview, 1680x1050 each, no problems. On the new setup (10.04) my old xorg.conf (see below) doesn't work and nvidia xserver settings refuses to detect my second (digital) monitor at any resolution greater than 640x480.

I've tried messing with xorg.conf to no avail and google doesn't appear to be my friend.

Here's the old xorg.conf file that worked in 8.04 but refuses to even boot under 10.04:

CentOS 5 :: Boot Setup From Partition That Is Formatted During Setup

May 5, 2009

Here is a thought experiment:

1. Copy vmlinuz and initrd.img from isolinux subdir into /boot
2. Adjust grub.conf to boot to that kernel
3. Reboot to setup
4. Format /boot (actually '/' ) during "fresh install"
5. Proceed with the installation-over-network

I see two possible outcomes:

1. The setup fails to reformat the drive, because it is "in use" by boot kernel

2. The partition is not "in use" and the installation succeeds

Why? Old cluster with broken CD-drives, lacking USB, and no separate /boot partition.

OpenSUSE :: Hp-setup Wont Setup HP Officejet?

Aug 18, 2011

With new installs of openSuse 11.4 I've hit a printer problem. I can run hp-setup (or hp-toolbox) for the wireless Officejet j6410 and it is recognised. The right driver is selected. Then when I choose add printer it all falls over with the error message: error: Printer queue setup failed. Could not connect to CUPS Server Is user added to "lp" group(s) error: Fax queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.

The user is added to the lp group. I have this problem with my 64 bit desktop and 32 bit laptop installs of 11.4, it all worked perfectly in 11.2. I've used the Cups web interface to set up the printer now and can print from both machines, but I would prefer to use the hp-toolbox, which has several convenient features. Where do I go from here?

General :: How To Setup Grub2 With Xen

Aug 24, 2011

I am booting a new Xen kernel and it all goes fine up until some point during the boot process when the machine reboots without warning. Unfortunately, I don't see errors flash up just before that happens. Is there a way of booting the machine with a working kernel and looking at a log of the previous boot or something? What I didn't notice is that there is actually an error on the screen. It just flashes up very quickly before the reboot. The error is related to not being able to mount the root filesystem because there is something wrong with my grub configuration.

A normal entry in grub.cfg looks like this:
menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-33-server' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)' .....

I added the following in /etc/grub.d/40_default
menuentry 'Xen 4 with Linux 2.6.32.45-xen' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os --class xen {
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)' .....

But it's not working for some reason. I also tried the 20_linux_xen script. Unfortunately that's not working.

See these errors:
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.45-xen
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.45-xen
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-server
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-33-server
/etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen: 57: uses_abstraction: not found
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.45-xen
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.45-xen
/etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen: 156: gettext_printf: not found

Gettext is installed. I'm on ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The error flashed up on boot is something like "please insert a correct root=boot kernel option..." Why is this so hard and why are there so many different examples of grub2 xen? some put /boot in front some just /. I tried putting /boot in front but that didn't help. Also some have --set=root uuid and yet all my other working entries just have --set uuid. Is this something to do with a different grub2 version?

General :: Recommendation For Setup?

Mar 3, 2010

I have been contemplating switching to Linux for some time now, frankly because I'm tired of the blue screens and viruses, the slow speeds, low customization, new versions of programs coming out after years of waiting, high costs/no sharing. As for Apple, I'm not a fan of Steve Jobs going from share-ware to locked down apps and frankly I despise the whole Apple company for that and its high prices. my first HP ever crashed so coming in is a new Dell with details to follow on it - this particular Dell doesn't fit with my habit of getting everything thats the newest thing out, but its close enough to what I had and was a "fast track" item, meaning built and ready to ship. Also, always owned Dells in the past with no problems.

I use my computer for movies, music, internet, e-mail, the occasional spreadsheet and word document as well as games that perk my interest every once in a while. I heard Ubuntu would be good, with Wine to be able to run the occasional Windows based program correctly. I was looking at a dual setup which I would switch to a single set-up if I became extremely comfortable with Linux.

I've been asked to look into moving the contents of 1 linux server which has samba, php, mysql, apache and some other bits installed, to a brand new server which currently only has the os. Is there an easy way of doing this by copying the files/directories straight over or would we need to build all the software from fresh again on the new box? They are both on different IPs so I'm guessing I'd need to update some configs and if I can avoid taking the current box offline then that would also be useful. I'm fairly limited in my linux knowledge.

General :: Best Setup For My Situation?

May 27, 2010

I've had a fair share of experience with Unix, but am humble and didn't see a better place to put this.

Bear with me here:

I am in a situation where I will be without owning a computer for a while. I have a 16GB SDHC which uses very little space for music/photos/game-saves and I wanted to use it along with a USB card reader to boot into a Live USB distro. I've tested with Ubuntu flavors and things work great. But after doing some reading, I found that the constant read and write is hard on any flash drive (not to my surprise).

I have decided to use a LiveCD instead, and see if I can allow persistence on my USB/SDHC setup instead. I absolutely need to virtualize a Windows XP machine within the Linux distro and be able to save some stuff.

For starters, what is the best distro for me? I'll be using it mostly for programming and the shell, so a fancy desktop isn't really needed (but man does Ubuntu look nice). I'm just making sure I can install and run programs from an SDHC in the way that I want.
