General :: Connection Activation Failed - Device Not Managed
Apr 26, 2011
I installed Linux 6, configured the network during the install with a static IP and when I do an ifconfig command it doesn't show an IP Address. Can't get out to the Internet because I don't think I have an IP/Address. I restarted network, went into preferences-network connections and everything looks fine, ran system-config-network and everything looks fine. When I do an ipup ifcfg-eth0 and get the message "Connection activation failed: Device not managed by NetworkManager". Is there an option I failed to load at install or I need to install now?

Yesterday I did an upgrade and today my box is unable to connect to the internet.
I have tried another cable, it didn't help.
Basically NetworkManager does not connect eth0 to the network, if I try to run ifup from the command line I get:
Code:
I can see in network configuration settings, that the device has been correctly detected and eth0 interface is correctly activated, yet when I try to uncheck the box manage by NetworkManager and start it manually, it tells me that the cable is disconnected... I've tried two different cables, different ports on my router - no help.

I use my T61 both wireless and in the dock, where I switch to the wired connection. After the latest round of updates, I seem to have lost the ability to switch to the wired network. When I turn the laptop on, I see it connect to the wireless network, but when I left click on the tray icon under Wired Network is says Device not managed. I have not made any changes to anything in the last couple weeks, besides some updates. How do I go about getting the wired network back in there?I tried to add eth0 back into System - Preferences - Network Connections, but whenever I try and add eth0, but it still says Device not managed.

My wireless connection has been giving me some problems, so I decided to try a wired connection directly to the router. However, when I try to do that, it doesn't work. When I click the network manager icon, it says that the wired device is not managed.
ifconfig gives this:
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:d3:dd:12:79
inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::213:d3ff:fedd:1279/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
[Code]...
I ran sudo dhclient to try release and renew my IP, in case that was the problem. It released and renewed successfully, but still didn't connect to the Internet.

when I first installed it on my IBM thinkpad, the eth0 was working correctly. I had someone try to install the network card for me, and something was changed to where now the wired connection is displaying "device not managed".

I think that's all that would be needed to help diagnose the issue. I'm kinda new to linux, and this is primarily a music machine.

Currently my setup is a road runner cable modem connected to a desktop via a ethernet cable. The networkmanager lists "Broadcom BCM440-BO 100BaseTX" device not managed. I've turned off the power to both the cable modem and the computer. I then turned on the power to the cable modem and then the computer. If I try the firefox browser, it can not connect to the internet.

After the use of pppoeconf, the network manager does not recognise neither the wired nor the wireless connection anymore. (It nicely did it before that) I tried to replace the etc/network manager folder with that of a different machine. Still the same. What else can I do to reset Network Manager ?

I'm having trouble getting onto the internet with ubuntu 9.04. I have just moved house and have just got the internet set up here (typing this on windows laptop with wireless). My ubuntu desktop is plugged in to the network, but in the top right hand corner when I click on the network icon I get: "Wired network device not managed"
In my old house I had a static IP. Is this anything to do with it?

I'm getting rather fed up with this Network Manager applet on Ubuntu and its seemingly erratic behavior.I often use my laptop for things like dhcp server to do pxe boot on other machines for netboot installs and other stuff. Often I have to set static address on eth0 etc.I know how to set a static address for eth0 by editing /etc/network/interfaces and all that good stuff, but when I click on the Network Manager applet, it says 'Wired Network - not managed'.I may have deleted it for some reason, but why does it no longer appear, even though eth0 is working?I've also found in the past that changes to interfaces in the Network Manager, such as giving eth0 a static address, do not seem to stick?

I'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says
"Wired Network Device not managed"
While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

I have used the information available at wiki.debian.org/iwlagn to install firmware etc for my Intel Pro Wireless 4965 card.According to the network applet the connection is good, but it only seems to work when my ethernet cable is plugged in.I get no connection without the cable in, even though clicking on "edit connections" showshat ethernet is shown as "device not managed".With the cable plugged in I can get emails. Iceweasel will connect to the internet, but Epiphany will not.Without the cable I get no internet connection at all

I've read hundreds of threads on this problem but they seem to be intermittent and the resolution has been using a different kernel version.
I'm using the latest kernel but I still have this problem
Running Logical Volume Manager gui and attempting to extend the volume results in the same error.

Recently did an apt update and upgrade to my CLI only Lenny server. Upon reboot I get an "ATA softreset failed (device not ready)" for all of my SATA drives. I noticed the upgrade changed the kernel to "Linux debian 2.6.26-2-amd64" (do have 64bit CPU).Once loaded to a command prompt I can assemble my raid 6 array with the command "mdadm --assemble /dev/sda to sdd" then mount it with mount -a. But transfers to the array areorribly slow ~1mbs.Upon reboot i get the same errors and have to assemble my array every time

My Phone keeps reporting
Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server failed
My phone does seem to show (all?) the contents of my home directory so must have received some data but no actual mail.
In debug.txt, this keeps repeating over and over:
Found 0 message changes
Initializing message diff engine
1 messages in state
And in /var/log/maillog, this does:
Killed (lost mailbox lock)
There are no other imap connections running.

we have a Red Hat server and I'm using wget in crontab to run some PHP scripts. We've been doing this for some time now and it's been working fine.I tried to add another script using wget to run a PHP script behind HTTP authentication. However, despite the fact that the URL works fine and the username and password are correct, we are getting Connection Timed Out errors each time. What might cause wget to work for unauthenticated URLs, but not authenticated ones?
I've tried --user=/--password=, --http-user=/--http-password and Username:Password@ in the URL and all three fail the same way. Here's the command in question:
[blahblah user]# wget -t 5 -O /dev/null 'http://Username:Password1!@test.example.com/sub/dir/file-name.php'
--2010-07-07 10:11:55-- http://Username:*password*@test.example.com/sub/dir/file-name.php
Resolving test.example.com... 000.000.000.000
[code]....
Again, wget works, the file with authentication works, but wget calling the file with authentication does not work.
UPDATE: Actually, I get the same timeout if I access the authenticated URL without authentication. Could that mean that Apache is rejecting wget requests for authentication outright?

I am trying to setup multipath with failover policy on openSuSE 11. I have two qla2xxx HBA's installed and they appear to be working. Here is the output of "multipath -l" command
[Code]....
While testing, I pulled one of the two connection to SAN, and the connection failed over to second HBA connection to SAN. When I plug the cable back in, it does not fall back to original connection... It stays in failed state. Also, I noticed that failed disk (sdd disk) comes back as (sdg disk), which is probably why connection does not fall back to original HBA. But, when I run "/sbin/service multipathd restart" sdg disk shows as as enabled in multipath -l...

I tried to finally set-up surround sound on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine and i was successful in doing so after a while of changing settings and tinkering. After doing so though, i was later in the day not able to get into the Pulseaudio Volume Control, therefore, everything is stuck where it is and i can't change anything. When i try to open Pulseaudio Volume Control i get the error message, Connection failed, Connection refused. My programs still play sound and i can control the sound of the programs through the programs, but i cant control the sound of the sorround sound now and my main sound bar only affects my stereo speakers, not the surround ones.
I believe this may have happened after the random disk check on restart, but i can't 100% confirm that and i'm not even sure if they are related. I still have sound, but i have no way to control the volume of my entire system at once. I did some looking around online and saw that others are having or had the same issue, and it was through different versions of Linux also. somehow reset everything so i can access PAVC and start over . I also tried steps listed in another thread here on the same topic, but they weren't working and it also seemed to be for older Ubuntu versions.
