I just installed ubuntu 10.04.1 using the wubi installer for windows. Installation finished without problems so I restarted my laptop as I was asked to. Then I selected to run ubuntu, there was the black screen "completing installation" and then came the startup where it stopped working.

View 7 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to upgrade my computer from Lenny to Squeeze and it downloaded everything but it's stuck at installing udev which it said it couldn't do on the 2.6.26 kernel. I then did update-grub and Squeeze's 2.6.32 kernel was seen (on grub). I have grub-legacy chainloading (if I'm not mistaken) but I don't have grub2 installed. When I try to boot through the 2.6.32 kernel so that I can complete the upgrade (that is to install udev and have everything working fine), instead of reaching the OS, it says something along the lines of "kernel panick not syncing vfs" and something about "root(hd1,0)".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu Server 10.10 machine running in-between my firewall and the rest of my network that monitors the internet connection and functions as a web cache.
It had been working for about a year, but started having an issue where no one (either from the server itself or from the local network) could connect to a website. Port 80 was the only one affected, which is forwarded via iptables to port 3128 for Squid.
After lots of trial and error, I thought to do a packet capture from the internet-side of the server (which I should've done in the first place!). Turns out the tcp handshake is not completed. The connection is started with a syn packet; the web server (google.com for example) responds with a SYN/ACK, and then nothing else is sent until the squid server tries again with another SYN packet. It repeats several times like that, then gives up and gives a connection timeout error message.

I'm no guru when it comes to iptables, and when I originally setup the server, I knew even less. So if something is wrong or at least could be done better with the rules please tell me. Also, I should note that I'm using bridge-utils to bridge the two ethernet interfaces. Squid is set as an intercepting (transparent) proxy.
How can I change the behavior of the selection buffer or a program that uses it ( I have xclip) to not send me text until the mouse button is released while clicking and dragging? This causes havok in the software I'm developing that tries to make use of the selection buffer. I need the full selection, not bits more bits more bits and then the full selection.EDIT: I cannot listen for mouse events such as button release outside of the GUI of my program.

I try to reactivate it through the desktop display manager but I get "The selected configuration for displays could not be applied. I have selected the option for Ubuntu to run alongside Windows but, on selecting the Ubuntu option at boot up, the installation stalls at "Verifying the Installation Configuration". Before this window came up, a very brief text message flashed on the screen - something like "getpwuid failed" (it was on the screen for only a second or less, so I didn't have chance to note it down. I use my desktop primarily for web surfing, playing games and web application development. I do run apache2 and mysql servers on my system as need arise. I have been told that apache2 server execution without mandatory access controls such as apparmor or selinux makes the system vulnerable.
I could not find apparmor in synaptics, so I choose selinux for this task. To start with I installed identical environment in virtual box and tried installing selinux as given in url [url]. After the last step i.e. after running command selinux-config-enforcing and reboot I get login screen, I choose username and enter password. Thats it. The screen becomes blank and no further progress. I am not sure where did I went wrong. I am also curious whether selinux is really required in such cases or there is any better way to handle such situations. I also thought of running apache2 service from virtualbox. But I did not find it suitable for my requirement though.

Instead of having constant trouble trying to fix those problems that doesn't stop coming. I am trying to find the opportunity to transfer my settings onto a Linux setup. My first question would be: Which OS should I opt for. CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu Server? Should I add in features into that to make my transfer simpler? Secondly, what would be the website manager, Apache or IIS? Is php easily compatible with the systems, or will it need configuration somehow? Finally, can it be possible for me to install programs that are exclusive to windows, such as Dreamweaver? I got a small knowledge on Linux systems, but I am completely new to the server side!
