i am using amd64 ubuntu karmic.. i am trying to install ns3 in it however once i start the build process..both the CPU are utilised to a 100 percent and after around building 1010 files out of 1050 the machine just powers off i tried doing a memtest..the same thing is happenin over there also..the machine simply powers down before completing the test..

When I try to run my XP disc it tries to get going, but inevitably gets to a blue screen of death (ahh, I missed windows).
Ideally I want a dual boot machine- A massive XP partition with a cute little Ubuntu partition on the side. Failing that, I need XP installed on this laptop. Possibly relevant specs are as follows:

HDD: 250GB
RAM: 2GB
I'd like to upgrade to 10.04 from Karmic but want to make sure it will leave me with a working system afterwards.
I figured a good way to test it is to create a disk image with dd and then try upgrading in VirtualBox using that image. The idea is that if it is successful, it'll probably be successful on the real machine too.
The only problem is my home partition, which is >1.4 TB. I don't have that much space left on any other hard disks. So I would like to somehow exclude certain directories in /home (or the entire partition) from appearing in the image.
Is this even possible? Or does anyone have any better ideas?
I have an ubuntu machine connected to my network which is used as a Minecraft server, storage, and a subsonic server for music. For the most part, the only person using these services, especially during downtime, is just me at home. Which is why I'm surprised that 2-days ago I detected that my network was being slowed to a crawl. There I found that the ip connected to my ubuntu was moving around 170,000 kb on my Netlimiter 3 program.
I have no idea why that is, I closed my ports that were forward for the ubuntu servers, but the bandwidth keeps leaking. Disconnecting the network from the ubuntu computer or turning off the computer stops the odd downloading and uploading. If anybody would have any information of what I can check or shut down in Ubuntu, please let me know. I'm fairly a beginner to the OS, but haven't been able to find a similar problem on this forum.

I just installed ubuntu 10.04.1 using the wubi installer for windows. Installation finished without problems so I restarted my laptop as I was asked to. Then I selected to run ubuntu, there was the black screen "completing installation" and then came the startup where it stopped working.

You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:

I have a 10.04 install with 2 network cards. wlan0, and eth0. wlan0 is the internet connection. eth0 is the local network. I want to be able to have internet connection sharing between eth0 and wlan0. I have set everything up, using firestarter.
is there a way of testing the eth0->wlan0 routing from the machine itself? The routing table looks sound, but I would like a quick way of confirming it. Is there a tool, like PING or TRACEROUTE which will let me say "ping [URL] going through eth0" ?

I did not do any update recently, so I do not really understand what could have happened. Our business is replacing Microsoft Windows with Ubuntu (Linux) but there is one or two problems with the main computer in the office. One the main computer is my Dad's computer and the only thing he does differently then the other computers is that he does his accounting which he uses Simply Accounting and I don't think Simply Accounting is compatible with Ubuntu/Linux.
I found a great, simple accounting program for Ubuntu called Eqonomize. It doesn't have to be that one, but anyone where we can convert are data from Simply Account to an accounting program with Ubuntu.
I know that we normaly use the command sudo su to change to root.. but, If I want to promotes an user to have the same powers of the root is it possible?

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn one of my linux machines (Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit) misbehaves. Whether I restart the "networking" service or go through ifdown/ifup sequence the link disappears. I can see the router light goes off as if the cable is disconnected. The network card light goes dark as well. Everything looks like the device gets powered off and I can't get it back on.
Reboot fixes the problem though it doesn't quite makes sense that one needs to reboot in order to simply update IP configuration (e.g. change /etc/network/interfaces config from DHCP to static IP).
I just did a new install on a pc chips p23g motherboard based machine. This motherboard has a built in 10/100 connector. When installing I noticed that the connection flashed orange for a bit and then returned to simply flashing slow. Its my understanding that if you have a green steady light and a flashing orange then there IS a connect. If this is true then, for some reason the install didn't find it or didn't install a driver for it. I installed 2 times just to make sure.Oh, when installing, off the dvd (10.4) it said there was a problem but it would give me a desktop so that I could figure it out.I am clueless.There was a box to install and that is what I have been using. Obviously, I am missing something here
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am curious about a particular matter. Recently I have purchased a small plug computer that I will use as a torrent server and networked file storage. The thing is I will attach an external HDD to this linux box. Now I am curious about something. The HDD is powered on while the box works, but once the work is done the disk seems to keep running and does not spin down automatically - even though there is no I/O happening.
My question is whether I should add a script that automatically powers down the HDD after a while of inactivity to save electricity or is it better to keep the disk spinning? How does spinning down a HDD affect its health?
when I tried to upgrade my computer from Lenny to Squeeze and it downloaded everything but it's stuck at installing udev which it said it couldn't do on the 2.6.26 kernel. I then did update-grub and Squeeze's 2.6.32 kernel was seen (on grub). I have grub-legacy chainloading (if I'm not mistaken) but I don't have grub2 installed. When I try to boot through the 2.6.32 kernel so that I can complete the upgrade (that is to install udev and have everything working fine), instead of reaching the OS, it says something along the lines of "kernel panick not syncing vfs" and something about "root(hd1,0)".

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu Server 10.10 machine running in-between my firewall and the rest of my network that monitors the internet connection and functions as a web cache.
It had been working for about a year, but started having an issue where no one (either from the server itself or from the local network) could connect to a website. Port 80 was the only one affected, which is forwarded via iptables to port 3128 for Squid.
After lots of trial and error, I thought to do a packet capture from the internet-side of the server (which I should've done in the first place!). Turns out the tcp handshake is not completed. The connection is started with a syn packet; the web server (google.com for example) responds with a SYN/ACK, and then nothing else is sent until the squid server tries again with another SYN packet. It repeats several times like that, then gives up and gives a connection timeout error message.

I had Fedora on my laptop (as well as Windows Vista 32-bit) working fine but I wanted to add Ubuntu for some things, and I did, however something unexpected happened: When I go to boot the the computer, the GRUB 2 bootloader (from Ubuntu) showed ubuntu, and windows, but not fedora, so I can't get into fedora. From a knoppix disk, I determined that all my fedora stuff is there, and (to the best of my ability to determine) intact, but I can't access it. What can I do from Ubuntu or the GRUB 2 bootloader itself to simply add fedora to that list?
