I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop.Below is code snippet of my C++ AppOpen the connection to serial port

Code:

Ubuntu Security :: Snort Not Starting - ERROR: "/etc/snort/rules/exploit.rules(264) => 'fast_pattern' Does Not Take An Argument"

May 12, 2011

I need assistance with my Snort Installation. I used Bodhi Zazen's Network Intrusion Detection System post and found it easier than the previous time I had done it. I am currently running Ubuntu 10.04 server and Snort 2.8.6.1 with BASE 1.4.5. I followed Bodhi Zazen's instructions and when I tested snort it ended with a Fatal Error due to ERROR: /etc/snort/rules/exploit.rules(264) => 'fast_pattern' does not take an argument
Fatal Error, Quitting.. Here is the entire output once I ran the test command: snort -c /etc/snort/snort.con -T Running in Test mode

Fedora :: 13 Windows 7 Dualboot And Hard Disk - Complete Loss Of All My Data

Oct 11, 2010

Last time I installed Ubuntu in a dualboot configuration with Win7 on one of my machines, my entire boot sector and Windows install got corrupted, resulting in a complete loss of all my data and requiring a fresh install of Windows.

I looked into this a bit after the fact, and it seemed to me it was due to conflicting hard disk geometry between Linux and Windows.

My question is, how likely is this to happen with Fedora? Is this because of Ubuntu? A bad install? Is there someway I can avoid this from happening when I install Fedora if it will happen?

General :: Failure To Complete Installation Of 10.40.1

Sep 11, 2010

.After trying to instal 10.40 as a "guest" of Windows7 in its own partition on drive D I got all the way thru then re-booted to finish the install as requested. At that point after reboot I selected Ubuntu from the boot menu then it hung up after quickly displaying and overwriting some option numbers - probably for GRUB

I uninstalled 10.40 then tried Ubuntu 9.4. It worked better and gave me an option menu after the install reboot. If I chose "normal" it also hung up.I was succesful by chosing one of the other GRUB choices that it gave me.Now everything works but with an older version.

General :: Ubuntu 10.10 Installation Does Not Complete

Feb 12, 2011

i am having a problem installing ubuntu 10.10. i had windows vista and used ubuntu inside windows with no problem. then, i wanted to reset my vista to its factory conditions (just to clean up space and get rid of hidden or unnecessary things) using the recovery disk - and the recovery disk partially worked, removed my os and didn't 'restore' anything. so i decided to just go all the way to ubuntu anyway, which was the plan all along, just sooner now.

i have the disk and i can easily make it to the 'try ubuntu' feature. however, when i try to actually install ubuntu, i make it all the way to the 'who are you page?' but the 'forward' button isn't accessible (which is how i noticed something might be wrong). this happens whether i try to install after trying ubuntu or if i try to direcly install without trying it first. i fill in the data, the installation says it's copying files, etc... and then, when it's done, it says 'ready when you are'. that's it. i can't click on 'forward', and none of the 'information about ubuntu' features and pics scroll by while the setup is taking place. i can't do anything at this point. the system isn't really frozen but it just does nothing. (i thought i might have to restart the computer but the only options i have are 'hibernate' and 'suspend'. also, once i manually restart everything it reloads all over again. when i take the disk out and restart, i see NOTHING. the vaio logo comes on, then the screen goes black and i see the cursor prompt but nothing else at all and i can't do anything at all.

Debian Configuration :: Dbus Package Is Corrupted Or Not Complete?

May 12, 2010

I had my laptop turned on. The battery turned out low and my pc shut down (not in the correct way obviously)! Plus: I was running apt-get upgrade but it should have done before shutting down. Now, I restarted my pc and under nm-applet I see: "wireless network: device not ready" and at login I get the message: "Network configurations failed. org.freedesktop.dbus.error.spawn.PermissionsInvalid: the permission of the setuid helper is not correct" and that I could not be able to connect via bluetooth (but actuallyu I can't use wireless!)! What to do guys? I use debian squeeze. I read from someone using kubuntu that he solved the problem reinstalling all the packages with "dbus" in their name. But I don't know if my ethernet will work yet!

Update: if I run dpkg-reconfigure dbus, it tells me that dbus package is corrupted or not complete: could be the issue?

CentOS 5 :: Oprofile Unable To Complete Dump Of Oprofile Data

Apr 26, 2011

1. I installed oprofile 0.9.4 on Centos Linux 5.5 this past Saturday. Since then I have been trying to learn how to use oprofile 0.9.4 on Centos Linux 5.5. If I follow the following steps running as root,

[Code]....

I obtain the following warning: warning: the last modified time of the binary file does not match that of the sample file for /home/frankc/DQTTest5/MatchUpLib/lirh5g_deb/libmdMatchup.so Either this is the wrong binary or the binary has been modified since the sample file was created. warning: the last modified time of the binary file does not match that of the sample file for /home/frankc/DQTTest5/MatchUpTest/lirh5g_deb/MatchUpAccurate.exe

I am wondering how to prevent this warning message from occuring because it indicates our profiling results may be incorrect.

2. My second question is : when I use opcontrol --start --session-dir=/home/frankc/DQTTest/Mary5Test and profile my application using /home/frankc/DQTTest5/MatchUpTest/lirh5g_deb/Mary48.exe --run, I encounter an error when I do opcontrol --dump. The error is: Unable to complete dump of oprofile data: is the oprofile daemon running? Why is the oprofile daemon stopping when I use opcontrol --start --session-dir=/home/frankc/DQTTest/Mary5Test rather than when I use oprofile --start. I checked the permissions on /home/frankc/DQTTest/Mary5Test and it is drwxrwxrwx.

Debian Installation :: GRUB Installation On MBR Fails To Complete

The GRUB installation step fails. I terminated the installation without a bootloader and rebooted from DVD with the rescue boot option.

Now I asked for a console to try to manually install the bootloader but the following command:

# grub-install /dev/sda1
[where sda1 is my root partition]

gets the following message:

/bin/sh: grub-install: not found

What can I do?

I think any program that doesn't ask the previous password, isn't able to recover data. Is it true?

Debian :: Better Way To Set Up SNORT IDS?

Oct 31, 2010

I am running Debian 5 and I'm trying to install and configure SNORT. My first stop is to Snort.org where I check out the directions. They tell me I need Libpcap, PCRE, Libnet and Barnyard. I've looked at the Debian Snort installation guide, and I've noticed that most the documents are really old...

I've actually got libpcap and PCRE installed and now I'm trying to figure out how to get libnet installed. It seems more tricky. I think it's the oldest api I've seen.

I guess my main area of question is if there is a better way of getting Snort up and running... I had a previous version of Linux where I install just Snort and I had network packets streaming across the screen, but that's not very helpful as I need some kind of interface so I know what the hell im looking at.

So should I follow the instructions on Snort.org as well as the "Debian, Snort, Barnyard, BASE, & Oinkmaster Setup Guide"? Or does anyone know a more up-to-date guide for Debian users?

Ubuntu Installation :: Does Not Complete Its Installation Verify?

Mar 3, 2011

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer that's already running Windows Vista. I used the Wubi installer and it seemed to go through the installation fine (using the desktop, amd64 iso file). After rebooting, I get the dual boot option. However, on Ubuntu start-up, I get a display with the message stating Verifying Installation Files. It seems to go through some verification, but then it gets stuck. I see a bunch of lines with the words "ubuntu ubiquity" with hexadecimal values and regular words. The last hexadecimal values to appear are: 7f2698c50d8e, 7f2698fca815; the last regular word is "_target".

If I quit out of the verification, I am able to get onto the desktop area, but a message appears stating a parted_server crash occured. Also, my wireless connection doesn't work, but I suspect I need to install a driver.
